What is BIM ?

Building Information Modeling Generation of management of a digital representation of physical & functional

characteristics of a building.

The resulting model becomes a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decision-making over its life-cycle (from conceptual stages, through design, construction, operational life before its eventual demolition)

(National BIM Standard Initiative )

CAD software commonly assign three main features to BIMs:

o ability to manage, store, share & exchange data (files or database);

o object oriented building model controlled by parametric rules (change to any part of the design automatically reflects to all other parts);

o ability to link data model to various types of analysis tools throughout building lifecycle.

What is BIM ?

“We can carry information downstream all the way through to the operation and

maintenance phases of the building's life-cycle” Brian Skripac, BIM Technology Manager for DesignGroup, Columbus, Ohio

Who can benefit ?

Different benefits to the members of

Building design & construction teams can optimize their work Move beyond 3D visualizations, Adding project time planning (4D) to visualize the entire construction sequence, Incorporating specific material quantities & costs (5D) to easily monitor construction budget

Commissioning Capture relevant information-data in the BIM model

Building operators Integrate all data directly in owner’s facility management software that can be readily accessible

Facility managers Incorporate monitoring or other building performance data

All can share data & a wide range of information (e.g. building design, construction, operation, maintenance)

that is all combined in one BIM model

Building Energy Simulation

Simulation Modeling BIM/IFC does not include all the necessary information needed to perform

detailed Energy Analyses using Building Energy Simulation software (e.g. Zone/space occupancy, Equipment for normal operation (non HVAC), operational schedules - lighting, shading)

The information needed is available from many different sources & in many different formats

Energy Solvers use their own proprietary schemas for simulation modeling & configuration (no compatibility - even on semantic level)

Simulation Models require detailed & comprehensive data (building model, systems, building usage, expected occupancy behavior)

Simulation Models require extensive end-user effort to correctly configure

Energy Solver vendors provide various resource libraries to Support information availability Make simulation modeling Easier to the end-user More transparent to the end-user

Resource Libraries tools Enable sharing of common, frequently used information objects

Provide representative information objects that have been validated in projects

Enable modularized information object design that reduce complexity in simulation modeling - Simulation Models are otherwise complex and extensive

Ensure greater consistency in simulation model development & configuration

Increase end-user productivity in simulation modeling & configuration by minimizing necessary end-user input

Template Tags

Resource tags - Enable the access & retrieval of resource data These resources can be provided by data bases, web services & diverse type of file systems. Typical

resources: climate databases & weather data files, building product databases, diversity schedules etc.

General tags - Support inclusion of variable functionalities in resource tags Usually, re-useable components that can be used when building custom tags.

Processing tags - Allow execution of arbitrary code They provide support for processing of resource output and other type of data processing that is not

provided by the resource tags themselves. For example, data re-formatting, data transformation, data

validation and stochastic sampling.

Sampling tags - Implement probabilistic & mathematical algorithms to

produce random data samples

Script tag reference documents the tags developed for ISES to facilitate

access to energy related resources & data models

Four main tag categories:
