This user guide is an automated electricity meters reading module‘s DMDC 1.2 manual. Read this document, before starting to set up and run the controller. The manufacturer does not provide any warranty for controllers, who were corrupted or damaged, due to ignoring the requirements written in this guide and meter‘s passport, or violating the safety instruction’s requirements.

1. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Only the authorized service persons with adequate qualifications can perform installation,

uninstallation and parameterization of the concentrator DMDC 1.2. National wiring rules

should be followed while installing and using the controller.

All equipment interconnected with this product should comply with the requirements of EN

60950-1:2006 (Personal computer, etc.) or other adequate safety standard applicable to

the equipment (electricity meters).

Read the installation instructions before you connect the concentrator to the power

source.

Concentrator DMDC 1.2 should be mounted in restricted access locations only. It should

only be available for the service persons to access this location.

Do not open the device enclosure except if described in this document. There are no

serviceable components inside. Some parts may remain energized even if the power is

disconnected!

Always disconnect the mains supply while installing or servicing the communication

interfaces.

2.2.Purpose of the data concentrator

Intelligent data concentrator DMDC 1.2 is used in the smart energy resources (electricity, water, gas)

metering systems. PLC (Power Line Communication) concentrator acts as a gateway between MDCS (Meter

Data Collection System) and metering devices, it collects and stores metering data and statistics.

PLC DCSK Modulation (Yitran Y-Net technology) or OFDM Modulation PRIME (PoweRline Intelligent

Metering Evolution) technology and DLMS COSEM (IEC 62056) protocol is being used while reading the data

from the meters.

Data concentrator runs OpenMeter (http://www.openmeter.com/) based web service for MDCS

communication with data concentrator.

2.3.Concentrator features

Two way communication with meters:

The main hardware components of the concentrator is ARM9 processor, PLC modem and PLC coupling

circuit, GSM/GPRS/3G(/4G) modem, peripheral interfaces (Ethernet, Serial, DI, DO), real time clock, power

supply unit.

Internal concentrator software includes Linux 2.6.xx Operating System, Metering Engine, Database,

DLMS client, PRIME data Concentrator engine (L20 Modification only), NTP client, WebService interface and

other concentrator service processes.

2.5.2. Processor and memory

DMDC 1.2 concentrator has 396 MHz clock speed ARM9 processor. Concentrator has 128 MB SDRAM

dynamic memory and 512 MB of NAND flash read only memory. Linux 2.6.xx operating system runs on this

hardware.

Database is stored on the 1GB Industrial μSD memory card. This memory card is also used for the

firmware update image download. Configuration parameters and meters date retention time is at least 5 years.

2.5.3. GSM/GPRS/3G(/4G) Modem

The concentrator can have GSM/GPRS/3G(/4G) modem (Wx2 or Wx3 modification), for communication

with the MDCS support.

DMDC automatically performs registration to cellular network after DMDC power on.

DMDC system performs periodical connection check (period is configurable parameter) to external host,

it’s called External loop connection check. In case there is no connection with external host DMDC performs

modem restart and reconnection to the cellular network procedures.

External host can be DHCP servers or other external sources list (this is configurable as well) which

support ICMP (Ping) protocol. List can be provided for check reliability.

2.5.4. PLC Modem

2.5.4.1. DCSK Modification (L1x)

L1x modification has installed Yitran IT700 PLC modem (base station). PLC connection is maintained

through all three power line phases. The signal is distributed / summarized to/from the phases using passive

(capacitive) coupling network.

Main modem features:

reliable communication over low-voltage network;

uses patented wide frequency DCSK modulation technology to transmit data;

supports „mesh“ and „tree“ architecture network with up to 8 retransmission levels.

2.5.4.2. PRIME Modification (L2x)

L2x modification has installed PRIME PLC modem (base station). PLC connection is maintained through

all three power line phases. The signal is distributed / summarized to/from the phases using passive (capacitive)

coupling network.

Main modem features:

reliable communication over low-voltage network;

uses OFDM (PIRME) modulation technology to transmit data.

2.5.5. Real Time clock

The concentrator has a high accuracy, temperature compensated RTC. RTC is supplied from CR2032

primary lithium battery that can be changed. Battery life time – 10 years.

2.6.1. Ethernet indicators

(1) Yellow LED is turned on when "live" Ethernet cable is plugged into the Module. The LED shortly blinks

whenever an Ethernet packet is received.

Check your cable, Ethernet switch or other Ethernet equipment if this LED does not turn on when you

connect the Ethernet cable.

(2) Green LED is turned on when controller links with the hub at 100Mb. The LED is off when the link is

established at 10Mb.

2.7.Interface connection description

DMDC 1.2 can have up to five terminal blocks (depends on modification). Please refer to the device

passport for the terminal signal meanings.

Possible terminal blocks and their meanings are showed in figure 2.5 and table 2.1.

2.7.1. Mains network connection

The concentrator can be connected to one or three phase mains network, which nominal voltage is

3x230/400 V or 230 V. Concentrator power should be connected using short (up to 10 meters) cable from the

house power inlet or power busbar. Each additional device (circuit breaker, meter, unreliable connection, and so

on) attenuates PLC communication signal. Only one mounted close to the concentrator circuit breaker

(automatic switch) is required.

Connection scheme is illustrated in Figure 2.7 and Figure 2.8.

Please read DMDC 1.2 installation guide before mounting the concentrator.

Always disconnect the mains supply while installing or servicing the data concentrator.

* Connection to one phase mains network: for PRIME PLC (L2x… modification) please connect all three

DMDC 1.2 phase terminals (L1, L2, L3) to the Mains (L) as shown on figure 2.7 by dashed line, for better PLC

signal injection. For Yitran PLC (L1x… modification) it is enough to connect L1 phase terminal, but all three

phase terminals connection (L1, L2, and L3) is also possible.

2.7.2. Ethernet Port

10/100 Mbps (10/100 BaseT) port is used for connection to IPv4 via Ethernet network, for the data

transmission to the MCDS. For the interface parameters configuration, please refer to section 3.

2.7.3. GSM/GPRS/3G(/4G) Modem And Antenna

GSM/GPRS/3G(/4G) wireless modem used for connection to IPv4 via wireless GSM/GPRS/3G(/4G)

network.

50Ω SMA connector is used for GSM/GPRS/3G(/4G) antenna connection. The antenna must be

compatible with GSM/GPRS/3G(4G) modem frequencies (see section 2.4).

2.7.4. USB Device Port

The Concentrator has a USB Device (USB type B connector) port for PC connection for configuration and

service of the concentrator. This port supports USB Full Speed (12 MBit/s) mode.

Programmatically USB port works in Ethernet (RNDIS Gadget driver) mode. Supported versions of Operating

system:

Windows XP (additional USBnet driver required, for more: http://www.webos-

internals.org/wiki/USBnet_Setup), Windows 7, Windows 8 (driver integrated with system), Linux (additional

USBnet driver may be required).

For more information, refer to section 2.9. When connected to a computer data concentrator will have

192.168.200.200 IP address.

2.7.5. USB Host Port

The concentrator has an available USB Host (USB type A socket) port. USB Host can be used for data

flash sticks to copy data, firmware updates and so on.

USB host can also be used to connect external (GPRS/3G/4G) modems and USB Ethernet converters.

Compatible converters (listed in 2.7.5.1 and 2.7.5.2 sections) are connected automatically after have been

plugged to the USB Host. In case data concentrator has been power on, plugged in converter are connected to

the data concentrator.

2.7.5.1. Requirements for external GPRS/3G/4G USB modem

GPRS/3G/4G USB modems must conform to the Universal Serial Bus Communication Device Class

Abstract Control Model (USB CDC ACM) specification.

2.7.5.2. Requirements for external USB Ethernet converters

USB Ethernet converters must be on ASIX AX8817X based USB 2.0 Ethernet Devices

A readily accessible voltage disconnect and protective device (circuit breaker) shall be

incorporated in the concentrator installation wiring (as shown in figures 2.6 / 2.7).

Requirements to circuit breaker:

• It should be rated to 6 A current and adequate voltage (3x230/400VAC or 230 VAC)

• It shall have a contact separation of at least 3 mm;

• It must be mounted close to the concentrator and easily reached to the operator;

• It must be marked, as the concentrator‘s switch-off device;

2.7.6. RS485 / RS232 Port

The concentrator may have a galvanically isolated RS485 or RS232 serial port (X3) for external device

connection. Connector signals are described in Section 2.7(Figure 2.5).

This port can be used for balance-meter connection to the DC. This meter can be accessed transparently

from MDMS. DC opens listening port (port can be set see 3 section) for this purpose and all packets received to

this port redirects to the RS485/RS232 and vice versa.

2.7.7. Digital Inputs

Digital inputs can be used for various purposes like motion, fire, and doors detectors/sensors. Every time

state on DI changes systems logs it to the event log (see section 5.5) and event alerts can be send if they are

subscribed by OpenMeter Web Service interface (see section 5.6).

2.7.8. Digital Output

Digital Output can be used for various purposes like control relays and so on. Output functionality logic

has to be implemented on demand.

2.7.9. Backup Battery

Backup battery is dedicated to run DC in case the mains power supply is broken. Under normal conditions

DC operates from mains power supply and charges backup battery. In case the mains power supply is broken,

DC switches to backup mode.

There can be two backup operations modes. First DC runs while backup battery exhausted (if mains

power supply not restored yet) and then switches it’s self-off. Second scenario, DC switches to backup mode,

sends message about the mains power supply outage (security alert) and then switches it’s self-off.

When main power supply restores, DC will run as usual.

3. Concentrator management, parameterization and diagnostic

3.1.Data concentrator configuration

DMDC 1.2 can be configured through USB / RS485 interfaces locally, Ethernet and GPRS/3G/4G

interfaces remotely as well.

Data concentrator has parameterization login and password. Parameterization login for security sake will

be blocked for 24 hours after configured amount (see Table 3.1) of unsuccessful retries to login in to DC’s

configuration login.

After successful login all DC parameters can be changed system and operation parameters as well (see

3.1.2).

Configuration can be made remotely or locally by any software which supports DC parameterization

interface.

3.1.1. Configuration login and password

After login in to the configuration mode, password can be changed or revoked. Every password change or

unsuccessful change will be logged to event log (see section 5.5). The system calculates passwords hashes

and saves only them. To restore strong password’s from hash to plain text password practically impossible.

3.1.2. Reset to factory defaults

To reset to factory defaults is needed to login to parameterization login. Run reset to factory defaults

command. After reset to factory defaults command run it will be asked “Do you really want to reset DC to factory

defaults?” after it to choose Yes, there second warning appears “All configured parameters will be lost. Are you

really wanted to reset DC to factory defaults?” After Yes was chosen, factory defaults will be restored and

applied to DC. If in any step was chosen No, reset to factory defaults operation will be cancel.

Operation parameters impacts data collection, communication with meter, meter time synchronization,

data management in database, scheduled task management. Parameters listed in table below.

3.1.5. DMDC clock synchronization and parameterization

DMDC runs scheduled clock synchronization from NTP services. Clock synchronization period may be

changed. DMDC clock can be set by the DMDC parameterization interface also.

3.1.6. Data concentrator update

Data concentrator supports drivers (of GSM/GPRS/3G(/4G) modem, Ethernet, PLC modem and etc.), DC

application (DC meters data collection, parameterization, maintenance service) remote update separately or

firmware (whole image of DC) remote update as well.

DC updates it’s self automatically, but update can be initiated manually as well.

DC at configured time connects to (S)FTP server every day and checks for updates. In case DC finds new

updates downloads it, decrypts, checks integrity, authorizes of these updates and if everything is fine runs

update procedure.

This routine can be made manually. Any who can connect to configuration account, can run this

procedure.

And one more scenario where (S)FTP server not needed. Images can be placed to the DC to the

preconfigured place and then run update manually. This scenario is useful for local updates.

Data concentrator update can be initiated by any software that supports DC configuration interface.

3.2.Concentrator diagnostic

Data concentrator collects diagnostic parameters to diagnose, prevent problems in the PLC network and

many other layers.

Data concentrator has diagnostic counters. System diagnostic, meters data collection diagnostic, meters

online duration diagnostic, meters communication quality diagnostic counters (Figure 3.1). These counters are

saved at every diagnostic period end and can be read for analysis.

All diagnostic and statistical information are processed and saved with internal clock date stamps.

This diagnostic feature gives information about current and historical system as whole status. Based on

this information can be diagnosed and localized problems as in the DC system and in the PLC system as well.

Diagnostic and statistical parameters can be read remotely by any software which supports DC

parameterization interface.

4. Meters data readout and parameterization

The main purpose of Data concentrator is to collect data from meters and pass them to MDCS. DC

communicates and collects meters data through LAN (Local Area Network in this case PLC) and pass this data

to MDCS through WAN (Wide Area Network in this case Ethernet, GPRS/3G/4G). DC have possibility to read

data and through local connection for example USB Device.

In general WAN and local connections have the same possibilities. WAN and local connections only

physical connection infrastructure. DC supports meters parameterization and data readout through them all.

Data concentrator runs OpenMeter Web Service interface for meters access.

4.1.Meter access process

Meter access process is responsible for meters data readout and parameterization tasks. It continuously

checks Tasks Queue and process tasks from the queue.

4.2.Meter parameterization

Meter parameterization is supported by OpenMeter Web Service interface. Meter parameterization can be

performed by any Device or PC that runs software which support OpenMeter Web Service client interface. PLC

meter parameterization can be performed by any software which support OpenMeter Web Service interface like

GamaLinkNet.

4.3.Meter data readout

Meter readout tasks are placed to the Tasks Queue. Tasks comes from the OpenMeter interface from the

MDCS (it called on demand tasks) and Schedule process generator. Meter access process takes tasks from the

queue and processes readout routine. Readout routine consist of connect to the meter, open the session,

execute readout tasks and close the session.

4.3.1. Meter time synchronization

DC runs many processes one of them is meter time synchronization process. Process periodically goes

through meters list and checks when last time meter time was synchronized. If it was earlier than configured

time (see Table 3.2), process takes care to check meter’s time and performs meter time synchronization if it is

needed.

Meter’s time always are checked every time meter becomes online.

4.3.2. Meter availability check

DC runs meter availability check process. Every meter have last time online date counter. Every time after

success readout this counter are set to current time. If there is no any readout during configured minimum meter

online check period (see Table 3.2) meter availability check process trays to make connection with the meter. If

connection was succeeded process updates online date counter, in other case meter’s status becomes offline.

In the configuration period for check meters for online and offline meters can be configured separately

(see Table 3.2). Recommendation offline meters check more often. It takes possibility to connect meters more

quickly. System becomes more reactive.

5. Data privacy and security

5.1.Data security by LAN

Data concentrator supports all DLMS/COSEM security levels public, low level security and high level

security. Security level depends on meter security layer. Data concentrator to connect to meter has had

appropriate keys.

Meters keys management is available by OpenMeter interface through SecurityTransferDescriptor in

ConcentratorAccess object.

5.2.Data security by WAN

Data concentrator have HTTPS tunnel via all interfaces that support OpenMeter and/or

Parameterization/Management interface (See 2.9 section). SSL certificates used for HTTPS can be managed

via concentrator’s management and configuration interface.

5.3.Data protection

All data, meters keys stored in database are encrypted. All objects are serialized and encrypted by AES-

128 algorithm and only then stored to the database.

5.4. Antivirus, malware protection

All interfaces data readout, concentrator management and configuration (see section 2.9) are secured

(HTTPS, SSH) and accounts protected by passwords. It prevents from sniffing (tapping) plaintext as well.

Mentioned interfaces are function based and not provide any possibilities copy, add, remove any external

content than can be infected with viruses and/or malware code.

5.5.Security event log

Data concentrator logs most significant events. It includes:

failed authorization or authentication, failed tries to login to configuration account;

requests or commands received;

firmware updates/upgrades;

high number of malformed or unexpected messages and errors;

digital inputs state changes (it can be used for doors detectors, cover tampers and etc.);

main power loss;

removal of battery;

incorrect protocol from MDCS and events, packets in LAN (PLC);

change of clock time, time zone changes;

malformed/unauthenticated communications MDCS and DC;

malformed/unauthenticated communications between meter and DC.

Every log can be enabled/disabled by the configuration interface and software that supports configuration

interface as well.

5.6.Security alerts

Data concentrator security log can be read via OpenMeter Web Service interface.

Security alerts can be subscribed via OpenMeter Web Service Subscriptions. Web Services Subscriptions

are according to the WS-Eventing specification and allows subscribing to events that are emitted by resources.

Events can be emitted from ConcentratorAccess resources when services activations update resources or when

EventLog entries are added.

Security alerts can be subscribed on EventLog object on ConcentratorAccess Resource [D3.2_v2.0.pdf, §

6.4.5.1.3, page 112].

5.7.Commissioning process

Data concentrator has default account and password. It’s highly recommended to change password

before to take DC the mounting location.

Concentrator management, configuration account name is “admin” and default password “admin”. If

Purchaser provides his own high secure password, manufacturer it makes as default during manufacturing

process.

SSL certificates (for HTTPS) can be provided by the Purchaser as well to place to the provided data

concentrators.

6. MANUFACTURER WARRANTY

UAB NAVITUS LT (further manufacturer) guarantees, that materials and components used in the

controllers production, assembly and adjustment, are free from defects and that staff performed their duties

qualitatively.

Technical characteristics are also guaranteed. Manufacturer guarantees, that produced controllers and

other devices of same use, will remain the stored data in its memory when power is plugged off and plugged in

again. All the gathered data in meters will remain unchanged and it will be possible to receive and analyze it

again.

Controller warranty service time – 24 months. Warranty is valid if the user has followed the rules set out

below:

controllers installation was performed by manufacturer or his authorized representative, or manufacturer

provided a written permission to a legal person, supplying him with all the needed technical

documentation for the controller’s installation;

electricity network and other independent connection lines were not cut off or shorten between the

controller and meters;

when changing the meters in the system, their parameterization or positioning, it is important to inform

the system manufacturer and get its written agreement and necessary software updates-changes (when

changing the meters in the system);

stamps and stickers of the controller box are unaffected.

Manufacturer provides software, firmware updates including available security updates, functionality

optimizations, bug fixes, patches including in software/firmware used third party solutions. Updates support time

is as agreed, standard support term 60 month.
