Transcript of Intellegent use of Virtual and Cloud services
“Every cloud has a silver lining,
but often you have to battle
serious storms to get them.”
David Pomphret – 27th February 2014
Economy via Efficiencies.
• Save Space• Save Power• Save Cooling•Save Money and the Planet.*
And deliver any Business or IT service to anywhere, quickly.

Virtual Silver Bullet?• Moore’s Law:
• The observation that, over the history of computing hardware, the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles approximately every two years.
Gordon E. Moore
• Parkinson’s Law:• The demand upon a resource tends to expand to match the
supply of the resource.C N Parkinson, 1955.
• Murphy’s Law:• What can go wrong will go wrong.
Captain E.A. Murphy, Jr. USAF

Virtual Silver Bullet- Moore’s Law
Compute power is doubling every 12 to 18
months
The majority of dedicated data centre based servers are running at under 10% efficiency.
Computers are getting more powerful, smaller and/or cheaper.
Storage and Network systems are keeping pace by getting more intelligent, quicker and more stable.
Software writers are writing systems to fully scale across all platforms including Virtual and Cloud.
The majority of users are ‘expecting’ the same high level of availability and accessibility in the work place as they get using home services.

Agility – delivering Business solutions quickly
Elastic – dynamically matching the compute platform to the use and load
Safety – providing ultimate delivery by automatically switching platforms in case of failure
All good useful features that everyone will request to use. Nature abhors a vacuum so
this demand will quickly expand to fill the void.
The demand upon a resource tends to expand to match the supply of the resource.

Virtual Silver Bullet- Murphy’s Law
Not all compute platforms are virtualisation aware – resulting in no reuse of equipment
Not all applications play well in a cloud or virtual environment
You no longer own anything – will your suppliers live up to their agreements?
SECURITY• Access
• Separation
• Exit strategy
What can go wrong will go wrong…

Cui Bono – Who Benefits? The Intelligent Customer benefits by useof a “Utility” cost model and paying ONLY
for what is actually used.
• Use the correct tools and frameworks to ensure selecting the right path• Tight management of Software licensing,
Patch, Hypervisor, SAN, VPN, BYOD and Software development• Use of industry standard ‘Cloud’
architecture patterns (basically standard SOA models on their side).
