  • INTEGRATED SYSTEMSOEM Partner Manual

  • An integrated system brings together customized components

(operating system, applications) to one system for a defined

functionality. The integration can be in the form of fabric

infrastructures, software or virtual appliances, vertically integrated

    solutions and cloud foundations.

An integrated system runs on general-purpose/industry-standard

    hardware.

35%of total server shipment value will be integrated systems by 2015*

    Integrated Systems

  • For over 20 years, Integrated Systems solutions from SUSE have

helped OEM partners bring efficient, scalable and highly customized

    solutions to the market faster.

With long-standing partnerships and customers in various industry

segments (security, Big Data, database, middleware, HPC, retail, BI,

manufacturing, etc.) Integrated Systems is a strategic pillar of the

    SUSE strategy.

    Your Benefits

    Integrated Systems

  • Benefits

Right system for faster time-to-market with the right workload technology innovation

Competitive advantageSmarter computing with a flexible and integrated operating system

    Simplified user experience through customization

    Integrated Systems

  • The Right System for the Right WorkloadThe world of IT is changing with tremendous speed. Trends like cloud

computing, the processing of large volumes of unstructured data (Big Data)

as well as the central provisioning of desktop environments (virtual desktop

infrastructure) are increasing the demands on the new data center. New

technical innovations (like the Internet of Things) and concepts have to be

    evaluated.

Integrated Systems, an emerging class of data center systems, deliver a

combination of server and applications in a pre-configured, customized and

    optimized hardware and/or software stack.

    Integrated Systems include:

    • Highly customized solutions for specific data center challenges (data-intensive

computing, data management, data analytics, storage, security devices)

    • Specific-purpose systems for vertical markets (healthcare, high performance

computing, Big Data, security, manufacturing, etc.)

    Optimization

    TeradataFor example, Teradata turned

    to SUSE for a bullet-proof,

    enterprise-quality operating

    system. Today, because of our

    partnership in customizing

    and optimizing SUSE® Linux

    Enterprise Server performance,

    SUSE is the exclusive operating

    system offered in Teradata

    products—and used internally.

  • Competitive advantages through customizationThe concept of a customized and pre-configured systems is not new. Customization is commonplace

in the manufacturing of everything from cars to laptops. And the advances in technology have been

hitting the global market with blazing speed, placing pressure on enterprises of all sizes to adopt

systems that meet the rising level of customer demands.

Customized products compete directly with standard products, providing a competitive edge

    through specialization. Benefits include:

    • High-volume flexibility • Lower costs

    • Higher quality • Better performance

    • Market exploitation • Differentiation

The ability to customize, test and deploy a tailored operating system for a specific use or device

can be slow, expensive and complicated. Furthermore, you customize at your own risk because the

process often results in the loss of vendor support. Fortunately, this is changing. SUSE is addressing

this issue by improving the granularity of our packages to enable buyers to take existing Linux

building blocks and apply them in different combinations based on each user’s needs. Linux’s

modular architecture is ideal for creating customized operating system versions because it can easily

    be stripped down and modified.

    Customization

    Integrated Systems

  • Faster time-to-market with technology innovationAccording to Gartner*, by year-end 2015, integrated systems will account for 35 percent of total server shipment value.

Driving this trend is users’ desire for lower cost, simplicity and more assured security. Driving the trend for vendors is the

ability to have more control of the solution stack, gain greater margin in the sale, achieve faster time-to-market and offer

a complete solution stack in a controlled environment.

SUSE provides a simpler, easier-to-consume model to create integrated systems. Pre-configured, ready-to-run images

that can be customized, with just some mouse-clicks greatly reduce the complexity of installing enterprise software.

    Faster Time-to-Market

    Integrated Systems

Go VirtualWhen you provide a virtual application image or

appliance to your customer, you are providing a

complete, fully integrated solution that can be deployed

in minutes. This not only saves time and expense in

your application deployments, but also increases the

efficiency of management and utilization. Deployment

of virtual applications for various virtual environments

becomes easier because you are not required to develop

for multiple operating systems, and physical packaging

    or shipping is not required.

Ramp onto the CloudRather than re-engineering a multi-tenant, single

instance application, you can use SUSE Studio™ and

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to create virtual or cloud

applications within a couple of minutes. The SUSE

Studio update and configuration mechanisms are

cloud-enabled, and the same enterprise-level SUSE

Linux Enterprise Server is available in the cloud. It gives

you an on-ramp to the cloud with little or no added

    investment required.

  • Simplification

    Integrated Systems

Provide a single, integrated platformSimplification is about removing complexity for the end user. The tight

integration of a customized operating system and the application stack provides

a consistent user experience that simplifies how people interact with content,

processes and business data. This tight integration, coupled with robust out-of-

    the-box functionality, helps you to:

    • Deploy faster

    • Facilitate product adoption

    • Decrease support demand

    • Provide consistent branding

    • Provide a better user experience

Recommended by MicrosoftMicrosoft recommends SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to customers who run Windows and Linux together. They work closely with SUSE to ensure that joint customers have optimized, fully supported Linux and Windows solutions. This Linux/Windows interoperability is key to a more efficient data center. More

    information on www.moreinterop.com

Identity FederationBusinesses with mixed Linux and Windows environments often require that users on the Windows side have access to resources on the Linux side and vice versa. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server includes Samba, an open source implementation of the Server Message Block (SMB) networking protocol that supports commonly used directory and domain infrastructures. This includes eDirectory™, Microsoft Active Directory and Domains and openLDAP.

Interoperability with UNIX systemsSUSE Linux Enterprise Server also works well with traditional UNIX environments. POSIX is a family of specifications and standards for user and software interfaces to an operating system. As a POSIX-compliant OS, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is compatible with other POSIX-compliant UNIX variants, such as Solaris, AIX and HP-UX.

Manageable from a Microsoft EnvironmentWith the SUSE Linux Enterprise Management Pack for System Center, you gain the ability to monitor Microsoft Windows Servers and SUSE Linux Enterprise Servers from a single console, giving you the best Linux management experience in a Windows environment.
