Dear Readers,

K U E H N E + N AG E L . . . . . . . WO R L D N O . 1 / 2 010

The contrasts between the “logistics scenes” which we present to you in this new issueof our customer magazine could hardly be greater. What do luxury hotels and emer-gency accommodation, industrial fairs and concert halls have in common? All of themwould quite simply be unable to function without professional and efficient transportand supply services. All kinds of major events are tied to tight time schedules, openingsof hotels or casinos demand a range of additional services that extends far beyond thestrict limits of logistics, and in the transport of relief goods high operational readiness, experience and flexibility often help to save human lives.

Service packages tailored to the specific needs of different customer groups, such asKuehne + Nagel has successfully offered for many years, have the crucial advantagethat the logistician is not only a master of his own craft but also has a detailed knowl-edge of the relevant industry and its peculiarities. This makes it easy for us to under-stand the needs of the customers from whom we receive inquiries and offer them tailor-made integrated solutions on the basis of our wide range of services and ourglobal network. The fields of hotel logistics, emergency & relief logistics and fairs &exhibitions logistics, upon which we focus in the following pages, are examples of suchsuccessful industry solutions.

We have a double cause to be proud of our offering in hotel logistics. On the one handbecause the decision to develop this attractive business segment is the result of aninnovative study project by our own young managerial talents. And on the other handbecause we have risen to the place of world market leader in this field. But it is a mat-ter of no less concern for us to place our broad logistics experience and global capabil-ities at the service of those who undoubtedly need it most – the still far too numerousvictims of hunger, war and natural disasters throughout the world.

I wish you an interesting read.

It is now eight years since Kuehne +Nagel began offering tailor-made serv-ice packages for international hotel andcasino operators, and the company isnow considered a market leader in thisspecial sector. The opening-up of thisattractive business segment is also amajor success story for the systematicstaff development scheme which theGroup operates for its talented youngmanagers.

In 2002 the graduating class of Kuehne+ Nagel’s High Potential Training Pro-gramme was given the assignment ofmaking a detailed market study of the

supply chain activities of large hotelchains, in particular with regard to newconstruction projects. After three monthsof intensive research around the globewith simultaneous training in interna-tional project management, the youngmanagers presented a product idea thatconformed to the specific needs of thissector and was based on a concrete busi-ness plan. They presented a concept thatconvinced the critical “jury” of theKuehne + Nagel Management Board –and the Hotel Logistics department wasborn. Only six months later, in the UnitedArab Emirates, the first new contract wasobtained and successfully executed.

Kuehne + Nagel’s hotel logistics servic-es are now well established in the mar-ket and the company enjoys first-classcustomer relations with the world’sleading operators of five-star hotels andcasinos and with hotel suppliers andmakers of luxury consumables. Since it entered the market,Kuehne + Nagel has already successful-ly executed more than a hundred con-tracts and delivered and installed sever-al thousand guest rooms in 19 coun-tries.

Kuehne + Nagel is the clear marketleader in the special field of completesolutions for the installation of furni-ture, fixtures and equipment (abbreviat-ed as FF&E). sumables for guest rooms, wellnessfacilities and other public areas oflarge hotels and casinos.

In the expansion of its activitiesKuehne + Nagel’s policy is primarilyone of organic growth. However ifattractive opportunities arise it alsomakes selective acquisitions that com-plement its existing activities. In2009, for instance, Kuehne + Nageltook over the Las Vegas-based specialservice provider Quality Transporta-tion Services Inc. This company, estab-lished as a freight agency in 1987, pro-vides special services for the hospitali-ty and gaming industry in North Amer-ica. Its service portfolio embraces over-land transport, warehousing and on-site installation; deliveries are madefrom two logistics centres in the imme-diate vicinity of the Las Vegas Strip. The acquisition has already allowedthe exploitation of attractive synergiesin the companies’ product and cus-tomer portfolios, and for Kuehne +Nagel it has closed a last-mile deliverygap in the North American and over-seas markets.www.kuehne-nagel.com/hotels

By express freight charter to the Kempinski in DohaThe German provider of top-class hos-pitality recently opened its first hotelin the Emirate of Qatar, the 62-storeyKempinski Residences and SuitesDoha. Kuehne + Nagel Hotel Logisticsspecialists were called upon at veryshort notice to organise the urgenttransport and customs clearance ofevery conceivable OS&E article (suchas pillows, towels, glasses, kitchenequipment etc.).

To accomplish this “mission impossi-ble” despite the customer’s ambitioustime schedule, Kuehne + Nagel consol-idated all goods delivered by the Euro-pean suppliers at its logistics centre inKoblenz. There the articles werechecked for the correct quantity andquality, relabelled, pre-sorted in accor-dance with their intended use in thehotel, and repacked. Kuehne + Nagelsaved further time by chartering afreight aircraft at short notice andspeedily making out the customs doc-uments so that the goods could beimported with a minimum of complica-tions. For safety’s sake a project man-ager accompanied them in the planeto Qatar. Thanks to the excellentpreparations by the colleagues inDoha, the MD-11 was unloaded inwhat was probably a record time ofonly six hours after its landing at 2a.m., and the two hundred palletscleared by customs in the space ofonly a day.

To save further time and the costs ofinterim storage, the freight was deliv-ered directly into the underground carpark of the new Kempinski. There, thepallets were handed over to Kuehne +Nagel staff who had been speciallyflown in from the competence centrein London. The customer was particu-

larly impressed by the subsequent Hot-Box Service, in which Kuehne + Nagelmanually groups together and portionsout the products for each guest room. This involved the filling and labelling ofmore than 1,000 boxes from which itwas an easy matter for the hotel staff toquickly stock the 370 luxury suites, restaurants and other public rooms. Ms. Emel Atikkan, manager of theKempinski Resort, was extremely im -pressed by the efficiency of the service:“Kuehne + Nagel have done an out-standing job, clearing our consignmentsthrough customs, delivering the itemsto the Residences, preparing the Hot-Boxes for the suites and leaving thestore in the basement in an orderly man-ner! They have bent over backwards toassist us in every way possible.”www.kempinski.com

The Marina Bay Sands® Integrated Resortis an architecturally spectacular complexof buildings on a peninsula adjoiningSingapore. This “most expensive stand-alone integrated resort property everbuilt” is being developed by the LasVegas Sands Corporation, the globalleader in the operation of casinos andhotel installations. The building complexconsists of three 55-storey hotel towerswith more than 2,500 guest rooms. Thethree towers are bridged by a unique340 metre-long continuous roof terrace, the SandsSkyPark®. The facility alsoincludes a museum, shops and restau-rants, and a 120,000 sqm congress cen-tre with capacity for 45,000 delegates,as well as two theatres and a casino.

2,500 guest rooms delivered and installedin 21 weeksAt the beginning of the year Kuehne + Nagel tackled a particularly challenging hotel logistics project. Under an exclusive contract, the warehousing, delivery and installation of furniture and fixtures for what is currently one of the world’s largest hotel projects was completed in record time

Apart from the substantial cargo volume,a special challenge was presented by thenarrow time window prescribed by theplanners of this ambitious project for theon-time delivery and installation of thecomplete furnishings. Kuehne + Nagelbrought together some of its best hotellogistics experts from its teams in Ameri-ca, Europe and Asia to take over thewarehousing and critical last-mile deliv-ery for this historic hotel opening project.Between January and May the projectteam worked round the clock on a three-shift basis on six days per week. Workingtheir way up from the ground floor, theywere able to complete 17 rooms andsuites per day on average and hand themover to the operators. An important rolewas played by Kuehne + Nagel’s tailor-made IT solution, which resulted in better planning accuracy and reducedadministrative effort.

The winning of the contract for this largeproject is a special testimony to the con-fidence placed in Kuehne + Nagel by aworld market leader in the hotel and casi-no industry; its punctual and successfulexecution demonstrates the capabilitiesof the logistics provider in material flowmanagement for the opening of hotelsand in the provision of turnkey customer-specific solutions.www.marinabaysands.com

No construction project is quite likeanother, a fact that was recentlydemonstrated in Peru, another coun-try where Kuehne + Nagel is experi-encing a growing demand for hotellogistics services. There, StarwoodHotels & Resorts, one of the world’slargest hospitality groups with a glob-al workforce of 145,000 and the oper-ator of some 940 hotels (includingsuch well-known names as Westin,Sheraton or St. Regis) recently openedtwo new facilities as part of its Star-wood Luxury Collection. On behalf of the hotel owners, and in close co-operation with a supplier company,Kuehne + Nagel’s competence centrein Las Vegas implemented two individ-ual plans for the transport andturnkey installation of the hotel fur-nishings.

After the global consolidation of thedeliveries from all suppliers, thegoods and furniture components fromvarious origins were transported toPeru by air and sea. There, Kuehne +Nagel completed the customs formali-ties and stored the freight in hallsthat had been specially rented tohouse the goods prior to their deliveryby road to the two new hotel facilities. The luxury resort in Paracas is a villaand bungalow development on a 20-hectare site on the Pacific coast, atwo-hour drive from Lima. As the areawas affected by the most recent earth-quake, transport posed a special chal-lenge. The second destination, theTambo del Inca Hotel, is close to theruined city of Machu Picchu inUrubamba at the heart of the Sacred

Valley of the Incas, and could bereached by truck from the warehousein Lima only by a three-day drive onroads which are always dangerous butparticularly so in the rainy season.

To ensure the smooth completion ofthe two projects, Kuehne + Nagel senttwo hotel logistics specialists from LasVegas to Peru for a period of 18weeks. They coordinated the deliveryof the goods to the construction sites, where they supervised the work ofinstalling the furnishings and fittingswhich was carried out by locally re -cruited teams of joiners and furniturepackers. The unpredictable weatherand the extreme altitude were onlytwo of the many challenges.

The customer was highly impressed bythe punctual handover of all fully fur-nished and equipped rooms in bothhotels. Chief Financial Officer FranciscoPerez-Egaña said: “We are extremelyhappy with our choice in nominatingKuehne + Nagel as our logisticsprovider. Their ability to manage theentire supply chain and offer a trueturnkey solution allowed us to openour properties efficiently and withinbudget.” The customer has nowentrusted Kuehne + Nagel with anoth-er project: In connection with the con-struction of the new Westin Hotel inLima, the logistics provider will supplyand install the furnishings and fit-tings for 300 rooms and suites inPeru’s tallest building in time for itsopening in October 2010. www.starwoodhotels.com/luxury

ty transport logistics whose smoothoperation is a crucial factor for success. This includes the early involvement ofthe logistics provider in the planningprocess to clarify the detailed require-ments relating to transport and customsclearance, the rapid handling of goodson the trade fair site using modernorganising technologies and adequatepersonnel, the rapid removal of packingmaterial and its delivery back to thebooth after the exhibition, and the punc-tual clearing of the halls to make way forthe next exhibition.

Although the special department Fairs &Exhibitions Logistics is administrativelya part of the business unit Road & RailLogistics, it naturally also handles manysea- and airfreight shipments. With itsspecialised know-how in the trade fairand event business, together withKuehne + Nagel’s broad range of servic-es, it is able to offer the customer anattractive overall package. The compre-hensive service offering rests on threepillars.

First, Kuehne + Nagel operates as anaccredited forwarder at a number ofinternational trade fair locations – inGermany, for instance, at Cologne,Munich, Hanover, Nuremberg and Düs-seldorf. A second service package is tai-lored for the all-round support ofexhibitors over the whole transport

chain from the customer to the exhibi-tion site and back, including customsclearance in the case of fairs held inanother country. The German FederalMinistry of Economic Affairs and Tech-nology, for instance, has for many yearstrusted in the services of Kuehne +Nagel for German official participationsat some 40 fairs and exhibitions annual-ly all over the world. The third pillar isevents logistics for orchestra tours, guestperformances of opera companies, musi-cal tours and product presentations inthe form of roadshows or stationaryevents such as presentations of new carmodels for the press and dealers.

Kuehne + Nagel offers the trade faircompanies and organisers, with theirexhibitions which are progressively grow-ing into independent brands, high-quali-

The exhibitors themselves are already con-tacted by the Kuehne + Nagel specialistsin their home countries and informed indetail about the specific transport require-ments and customs regulations. Throughits own insurance broker Nacora, Kuehne+ Nagel offers the customer comprehen-sive exhibition insurance which coversintermediate storage during the transportoperation and the period when the goodsare present at the exhibition site itself. Inthe case of complex trade fair appear-ances such as national participations orlarge individual stands, the project man-agers of Kuehne + Nagel travel to theexhibition sites and are at the customers’disposal round the clock to assist in coor-dination and provide other support. Thesame contact person, who knows theneeds of the customer in every detail, isthus available throughout the duration ofthe exhibition.

In events logistics, finally, it is particular-ly important to closely study the cus-tomer’s list of requirements, to checktime schedules and their feasibility, toinspect event venues in advance, and torespond flexibly to changes in the trans-port plan. Musical instruments of orches-tras, for instance, which may be extreme-ly valuable, must be transported at con-trolled temperatures, maintaining a con-

tinuous chain of between 18 and 20degrees Celsius. Stage properties andcostumes of opera houses often have tobe packed and shipped immediatelyafter the performance, and in some cas-es flown to the place of the next guestperformance with special permits and infully chartered aircraft.

However different the detailed require-ments of an industrial fair or trade exhi-bition, a large project presentation or amusical tour, the logistics challenges aregenerally highly complex and precisecompliance with the planned timeschedules is vital. The late arrival of astand element, a damaged product mod-el or missing musical instruments couldquickly endanger the success of a majorevent and seriously damage the imageof the customer – and, of course, thelogistics provider. In this field of busi-ness it is therefore particularly impor-tant for the staff to be at the service ofthe customer at all times, and a plan Bmust always be prepared and ready athand in case of emergencies. Kuehne +Nagel’s specialists for trade fair andevents logistics have already demon-strated their extensive experience incountless projects and thus contributedto the excellent reputation the companyalso enjoys in this special field.

At the Munich fair Kuehne + Nagel isresponsible, among other things, forthe physical handling and customs pro-cessing of the exhibits and provides theequipment needed for unloading andloading. In the critical periods immedi-ately before and after the fair, 65 fork-lifts and 30 truck-mounted cranes witha lifting capacity of up to 400 tonneswere in operation, as well as countlesstelelifters and platform hoists. A partic-ularly challenging task is to collect theempty packing material from theexhibitors, to store it during the fairand to return it as quickly as possibleafter the close of the event – at thisyear’s fair the volume of empty packag-ing amounted to no less than 10,000cubic metres.

In addition, it is engaged inbusiness with selected major humanitar-ian organisations including the Interna-tional Red Cross and the Red Crescent,as well as a number of non-governmen-tal organisations and suppliers for thehumanitarian sector. Each year Kuehne+ Nagel handles several thousand indi-vidual orders, which are coordinated byits own competence centre for relieflogistics in Copenhagen and executed

through its global network. As in othersectors, in the relief logistics fieldKuehne + Nagel offers a wide range ofsolutions extending from internationaltransport by land, water and air to inter-mediate storage and country-specificdistribution concepts. The Internet-based information system KN Loginenables the shipments to be trackedand monitored by all staff members andpartners, in addition to which tailor-made reporting solutions are at the dis-posal of certain large customers.

This field of transport, where things rarely go according to the book, demands a great deal of experience and flexibility. It is mistaken to believe that relief logis-tics consists only of urgent disaster mis-sions in which emergency teams areflown to remote parts of the world tocoordinate and supervise the distribu-tion of emergency supplies loaded onchartered freight aircraft (see article onpage 14). More than nine tenths of thetransports effected by Kuehne + Nagelin this business segment are regularservices, mainly for the replenishmentof strategic stocks for the long-term aidprogrammes of the United Nations. Theremaining, mainly unforeseeable opera-tions demand the utmost speed ofresponse and are a true test of the logis-tics experts’ talent for improvisationbuilt upon many years of experience. For these emergency cases the appropriate organisation and personnelresources must be ready and the neces-sary transport capacity immediatelyavailable round the clock on 365 daysper year.

To maintain this infrastructure and keepit in a permanent state of readiness is acost-intensive task. Additional costsresult from the employment of subcon-tractors such as airlines, local for-warders or – depending on the area ofoperation – escorts for the transports.Although relief logistics is not a big

Mosquito nets are an effective, low-priced

and above all durable means of protec-

tion against malaria – particularly if they

release an active substance which is

deadly for mosquitoes but harmless to

humans. Such a product has been devel-

oped by the chemical company BASF,

which supplies impregnated mosquito

nets to many international aid organisa-

tions and the health ministries of more

than 50 countries. The special feature of

this innovative product is that the BASF

researchers have incorporated the

insecticide into a polymer used to treat

the nets in such a way that it migrates

to the surface at a steady rate over a

number of years and remains effective

even after many washes.

In mid-2009, on behalf of Unicef,Kuehne + Nagel organised the trans-port of 5.5 million mosquito nets to theDemocratic Republic of Congo. Thetask was a complex one, not onlybecause of the large volume of freightbut also because the nets had to betransported from four staging areas bydifferent routes and modes of transportto more than a hundred distributioncentres in this vast country. 2 millionnets were transported in eight bargesvia the Congo river, and Kuehne +Nagel sent a further 900,000 in 34truckloads across the whole of Tanzaniato the port of Kigoma, where they werelikewise transhipped onto river barges. The remaining 2.6 million nets weretransported by road from Mombasa inKenya to three different areas in East-ern Congo. However, the most difficultroute was the one through Uganda toKisangani, where a transport infrastruc-ture is virtually non-existent. In opera-tions of this size, efficiently functioningcommunications between all partiesare crucial. In cooperation with thecompetence centre in Copenhagen, theKuehne + Nagel national companies inTanzania, Kenya and Uganda efficient-

ly handled the project within the pre-defined timeline to the complete satis-faction of Unicef.

The starting points of efficient disasterlogistics are the stocks of supplieswhich aid organisations position instrategic locations all over the worldin order to allow a more rapid responseto emergencies. UN organisations andnon-governmental organisations aresupported by emergency teams or spe-cialised departments of logistics pro -viders with expert knowledge for thetransport of medical supplies, watertreatment plants, food, clothing andtemporary housing.

Despite the progress that this coopera-tion has made over the past years, theproblem of duplicated or incorrect deliv-eries and delayed intervention in disas-ter areas still exists. Scientific analysesindicate that fast and efficient disaster

aid can be achieved only by improvedcoordination and a concentration ofactivities and capacities.

However, the shortage of food, medicalsupplies and water is for the most partnot a result of sudden catastrophicevents but a consequence of permanentstructural problems in the famine regionsof the world. Since 1995 the number ofpeople affected by hunger has risen tomore than a billion or 15 percent of theworld population. This alarming fact isdocumented by the World Hunger Index2009, which lists 20 African countriesamong the 30 with the highest levels ofhunger. The figures also show that emer-gency and development aid needs to bespecially focused on countries to thesouth of the Sahara. According to Unicef

Humanitarian logistics – more than emergency aidThe past 30 years have seen a sixfold increase in the annualnumber of natural disasters such as earthquakes, droughts, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions and storms. Experts fore-cast that, driven by climate change, this trend will continue infuture. However, major challenges to humanitarian logisticsare presented not only by emergency aid to disaster areas but also by the supply of goods to people in areas of chronicfamine By Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Helmut Baumgarten*

figures, roughly three million childrendie each year as a result of malnutrition.Nearly a third of the world populationhas only inadequate access, or none atall, to vital medicines.

The chronic shortage of food, drinkingwater and medical aid in many parts ofthe world is accompanied by a trendthat is leading to hardship for a growingnumber of people in developing andemerging countries: Whereas major dis-asters attract the attention of the mediaand stimulate a high readiness todonate, it is increasingly difficult toraise funds for regions that are in per-manent need. Furthermore, readiness todonate has fallen by roughly a thirdsince the beginning of the global eco-nomic crisis. Another problem is thatmedical and food supplies too oftenpass their expiry dates or disappear ontheir way to those in need – either as aresult of inappropriate treatment duringtransport and storage, corruption, alack of proper information or quite sim-ply an inadequate infrastructure.

Logistic elements such as transportplanning, refrigerating chains, the secu-rity of goods and supply chains or infor-mation management are key factors forsuccessful development cooperation.Humanitarian logistics can and musttherefore utilise the experience of thecommercial sector, but at the same timefollow unconventional paths in order toadapt to special conditions and providethe best possible supply level with theavailable capacity. In this connection, human resources are a key factor in thesuccessful development of transportand logistics systems.

Particularly in developing countries, however, logistics specialists with thenecessary know-how are in short supply. This means that it in those places it israrely possible to maintain a smoothlocal flow of goods and information. The training of logistics specialists indeveloping countries is therefore one ofthe main challenges that face humani-tarian logistics, and can make a decisivecontribution to the reduction of trans-port and distribution problems.

In addition to problems of disasterlogistics, a research team sponsored bythe Kuehne Foundation at the TechnicalUniversity of Berlin is now examiningsuitable logistics concepts for the coun-tries of the East African rift valley. Inthis project, the researchers are not only

seeking new ways to use the great lakesand existing but poorly maintained rail-ways and roads, but are also involvingAfrican training and further educationinstitutions in the joint development of

suitable logistics concepts. KN WorldMagazine will report in one of its com-ing issues on the experience and resultsof these field studies in Tanzania andMalawi.

A FOCUS OF RESEARCH SUPPORTED BY THE KUEHNE FOUNDATION

As part of its committed support for training, further education and research and development

in the field of logistics and transport, the Kuehne Foundation also addresses the theme of

Humanitarian Logistics. The Foundation is sponsoring a research project of the same name at

the Technical University of Berlin, and, as co-publisher with the Haupt-Verlag of the scientific

series “Logistik”, has already financed a number of publications on this subject such as Logistik

im Kontext internationaler Katastrophenhilfe by Philippe Tufinkgi or Humanitarian Logistics by

Alexander Blecken. The Kuehne Foundation also sponsored and organised the plenary session

“Humanitarian Logistics – Future Needs and Potential Solutions” at this year’s International

Disaster and Risk Conference IDRC, which took place for the third time at the end of May in

Davos. The Foundation plans to selectively expand its support for research and practical studies

in this important field.

Kuehne + Nagel was at the forefront ofthe international relief operations thatgot under way immediately after theearthquake disaster which hit Haiti inJanuary. Under a long-term agreementwith the European Commission the com-pany guarantees, among other things, that in emergencies a freight aircraftcan take off for the disaster area withinnot more than 24 hours after beingrequested. On the basis of this standbyservice Kuehne + Nagel made a light-ning response to the Haiti earthquake.Immediately after the first shock, achartered Boeing 747 with 100 tonnesof freight from the Swedish aid organi-sation MSB and the Norwegian Churchleft Stockholm-Arlanda airport for theDominican Republic.

From there, the goods – four-wheel drivevehicles including 200 litres of dieselfuel, water purification plants, tents,

clothes and many other items – contin-ued their journey by road to Port-au-Prince. To coordinate the loading of theair freighter and to make out all the nec-essary papers, Kuehne + Nagel sent spe-cialists at short notice from the compe-tence centre in Copenhagen to Stock-holm while two of their colleagues flewdirectly to Santo Domingo to preparefor the receipt of the relief goods andtheir prompt on-carriage by land. Sincethis first mission Kuehne + Nagel hastransported substantial quantities ofrelief goods to Haiti by sea and air. Inview of the fact that Haiti will remaindependent on international aid for along time to come, the company willmaintain its local representation atleast for the rest of the year.

In addition, in May Kuehne + Nagel sup-ported one of the many aid missions forthe devastated country by providingtransport services free of charge incooperation with the American logisticscompany UPS. With the aim of supply-ing roughly 10,000 Haitian farmerswith urgently needed seed (for cereals, cabbage, carrots, aubergines, melons,

onions, tomatoes and spinach) beforethe end of the planting season, theagrochemical and biotechnology corpo-ration Monsanto donated seed with avalue of more than 1 million US dollars. To ensure that this extremely welcomereconstruction aid reached its needyrecipients as quickly and efficiently aspossible, the two logistics providersjoined forces, with UPS handling air-freight deliveries and Kuehne + Nageltaking responsibility for sea and roadtransport. The seed was then sold atgreatly reduced prices through farmers’shops all over the country; the proceedsof the sales will be at the disposal of thefarmers’ associations for the purchaseof further essentials.

Special importance was attached to the sustainable, environment-friendlydesign and utilisation of the terminal. The “green logistics” concept is reflect-ed in the planting of the 24,000 sqmgreen area with roughly 12,000 treesand shrubs, the lighting and heatingsystems and the use of regenerativeenergies. Kuehne + Nagel has alsodemonstrated its environmental aware-ness by the construction of a photo-voltaic installation which is one of thelargest in Hamburg with an area ofnearly two thousand sqm.

The design of the handling and logisticshalls is in line with the latest safety andproductivity standards. A special fea-ture is the underfloor chain conveyorforklifting trucks in the cross-dockinghall, which substantially increases theefficiency of logistics and productiveactivities in road transport. Major syner-gies between the overland transportand contract logistics businesses resultfrom the enlarged storage areas and thejoint management of human resourcesand the hall and equipment capacities.

The first few months of operation showthat the consolidation of airfreight, roadtransport and contract logistics activi-ties under a single roof has alreadybrought a substantial improvement ininternal cooperation and the quality ofservice. The new logistics centre enablesKuehne + Nagel to provide the wholerange of services with even greater effi-ciency on a one-stop basis.

As a targeted marketing measure, cus-tomer events are held in Obergeorgs -werder at regular intervals to enableshippers to see the potentials and capa-bilities of the facility’s installation forthemselves. On these occasions Kuehne+ Nagel has been able to further

The building complex, comprising fivewarehouses and two office buildings ona twelve-hectare site directly by theHamburg-Süd motorway intersection, took roughly one year to complete. With166 light signal-controlled loadinggates and generously dimensioned vehi-cle docking areas together with state-of-the-art video surveillance of the wholesite, the terminal is designed in everyrespect for the fast and secure handlingof goods. The total investment volumefor this path-breaking facility amountedto roughly 80 million Swiss francs.

With the expansion of its infrastructure inthe Hamburg region, Kuehne + Nagel isresponding to the demand for cost-effec-tive, integrated logistics solutions. InObergeorgswerder the company has con-solidated its contract logistics and roadtransport activities, the handling ofseafreight imports and exports and salesadministration under a single roof, aswell as adding a further 25,000 sqm ofspace to its contract logistics facilities inHamburg. 475 Kuehne +Nagel employ-ees are now working in Obergeorgs -werder, 20 of them in newly created jobs.

sales promotion and distribution opera-tions. A further service offered at thislocation is the stuffing of export con-tainers, for which an attractive new con-tract has been concluded with a majorcustomer from the automotive supplysector.

In February, Kuehne + Nagel began thestart-up of a newly created distributionsolution for Central and Eastern Europefor another large customer in the con-tract logistics sector. Furthermore, in accor-dance with the strategic objectivesincreased cross-selling has opened upfurther business potentials, particularlybetween road transport and contractlogistics.

The new facility also enables Kuehne +Nagel itself to provide forwarding serv-ices that it formerly had to subcontractto other companies for reasons of spaceor costs. This particularly applies to theunloading of consolidated containerscarrying imports destined for the hinter-land. These shipments can now be dis-tributed more quickly and at lower costvia the company’s own land transportnetwork.
