Integrated Business Analysis for Your Enterprise

Your operational systems gather a mountain of raw data about each guest such as identity, preferred accom-modations, amenity requests, spending patterns and more, presenting you with an overwhelming volume of raw data. The challenge before you is to access this data and render it useful. To obtain the maximum value from your data, you need powerful strategic analysis tools to transform your data into true business intelligence.

Operational systems are designed to serve business operations and optimize transaction efficiency, not to promote analytical flexibility. As a result, you need to integrate data from a number of disparate operational sys-tems to obtain valuable corporate information. Engineered to leverage your technology investments, align disparatesystems, provide cohesive business intelligence and improve your ability to serve and retain your guests, Hotel Information Systems (HIS) offers epitome Business Intelligence (BI).

HIS partnered with BI industry-leader Cognos and devel-oped an integrated business performance management solution, epitome BI, using the Cognos suite of products. epitome BI consolidates data from multiple property and corporate management systems. It has the ability to add foreign sources of data, such as budget statistics, industry statistics and data extracts from third party systems.

epitome BI consolidates, cleanses and correlates disjointed data in hierarchically organized formats. The data can be analyzed from a micro to a macro perspective. The BI solu-tion has hospitality-industry key performance indicators built into it so that hospitality professionals can measure their business performance. Additionally, the data in the solution can be analyzed through various perspectives that have hierarchies associated with them, providing the abil-ity to drill down and across the data. The key performance indicators and the various perspectives enable you to extract the valuable information you need to make well-informed decisions with confidence.

Key Performance Indicators (Measures)

Some of the key performance indicators (KPIs) included in the solution are:

• Rooms Sold

• Room Revenue

• Room Revenue per Available Room (RevPAR)

• Room Revenue per Available Customer (RevPAC)

• Room Rate (ADR)

• Other Revenue (Food & Beverage, Telephone, Laundry, etc.)

• Occupancy Percentage

• Lead Time

• Arrivals / Departures

• Available / Occupied Rooms

Perspectives (Dimensions)

epitome BI is built with various dimensions which enable you to analyze measurements from different perspectives. Additionally, each dimension has a hierarchy associated with it so you can drill down into the data. Some examples of data dimensions are:

• Guest

• Property

• Room Type

• Market Segment

• Source of Business

• Package Plan

• Company

• Travel Agent

• Geography

• Stay Date

• VIP

• Transaction Type

Data Extracts

Data extracts occur at the transaction level. Extracts are scheduled so they do not interfere with the processing requirements of transactional systems, such as a Property Management System or a Central Reservation System.

Data Transfer

The method of data transfer for the data extract, from the location of the transactional system to the location of epitome BI, depends on the network architecture of the corporate system. In many systems a form of FTP may be used.

Extraction, Transformation and Load (ETL)

An ETL process is designed to populate the data ware-house with consistent, clean, integrated and summarized data. Acting as a bridge between the business applications and the data warehouse, ETL extracts raw data from the transactional data source, transforms it into usable data and loads it into the data warehouse.

Data Warehouse

The epitome Data Warehouse is a relational, highly scalable enterprise solution designed to expand as your business grows. With a relational schema that employs a data dictionary using self-descriptive naming conventions, it is suitable for ad-hoc query and custom reports. As a strategic tool, it provides a robust data storage environment. By collecting relevant data from diverse systems into a data warehouse, you can merge enterprise-wide data to derive a more comprehensive and valuable view of your business, its processes and customers. Because a data warehouse is independent of your operational systems, your mission-critical applications and functions are not affected when you are conducting business analysis activities.

Data Marts

Data marts focus on specific subject areas and act as secondary, multidimensional, dynamic informa-tion stores to the data warehouse. They are subsets of the larger data warehouse from which they extract and transform data. Simply stated, data marts are the working copies of the information that provide efficient avenues for queries, reporting and manipulation of the core data warehouse elements.

Subject Areas and Views

epitome BI provides Multidimensional Online Analytical Processing (MOLAP) for hospitality-specific data marts that include Reservations (Future and Current), In-house Guests (Current and Past), Bookings (Groups and Wholesalers), Folio, Accounts Receivable and Room Inventory.

Over 100 predefined view templates are delivered with the subject areas to assist your organization in getting started with its business analysis. These view templates can be altered and saved to create a greater number of predefined views for your staff.

MOLAP Tools

MOLAP software tools organize the data in your data marts for strategic analysis and enable you to analyze different dimensions of multidimensional data. Theyprovide analysts, key managers and executives with “just-in-time” strategic information and the tools for insight into the data with fast, consistent, interactive access to various views of information. MOLAP tools not only provide answers to the “Who?” “What?” and “When?” questions about the data, they also provide answers to the “Why?” and “What if?” scenarios. The uses of MOLAP range from slicing and dicing the data (browsing various views), to calculations, to more serious analysis such as complex modeling. The data marts and MOLAP tools are designed to:

• Provide only “need-to-know” data designed for specific strategic analysis related to a particular business strategy so that decision-makers are not burdened with unnecessary information.

• Provide a multidimensional environment in which to conduct queries, execute reports and perform targeted strategic analysis.

• Provide a wide variety of strategic analysis functions to multiple organizations within the enterprise, including forecasting, market research analysis, promotional analysis, and various sales and financial modeling.

epitome BI is integrated with Cognos reporting tools that enable you to produce, maintain and deliver analytical results in the form of displays and reports to your sys-tem users. With the managed reports option you can deliver pre-structured reports and queries over the Internet, your intranet or to wireless devices. Additional Cognos tools allow your users to create and execute ad-hoc queries using a Web client to directly access your corporate information.
