In five calendar days TEG’s team analyzed the goals of the project, developed innovative strategies that enhanced the work environment, incorporated Sustainable Architecture for LEED Certification, and created a complete Campus Imaging Presentation. Many firms would have taken months to create and generate this type of work - and we did this in less than a week. Credit goes to our collaborative creative process and our staff, which allows our project teams to plan and design state-of-the-art facility solutions – with excellent responsiveness and creativity.

In July 2011, TEG was awarded a project for which I have a tremendous passion: the University of Louisville Soccer Complex. The selection process was rigorous and pitted TEG against formidable national firms. I love the sport of soccer and have worked with several national sports organizations for some time to create a world-class soccer facility and enhance the opportunity to cultivate this sport locally. So naturally, TEG leaped at the opportunity to design this stadium. Our unique Computer-Generated Images Studio provided extensive and highly realistic designs of initial concepts for the site, maximizing visibility, access, facility amenities and parking. Since these designs needed to demonstrate our passion and dedication about the creation of this facility to the University of Louisville, and also had to be generated in a short timeframe, creative collaboration was once again the key.

As you can see, TEG has slightly diversified our project interests, but healthcare remains over 85% of our project expertise. The examples above represent two non-health-related projects, but both involve projects that are complex and concern facility designs that are creative and innovative.

In the wake of continued economic turmoil, we remain true to the values and work ethic that have allowed us to remain a trusted partner to our clients for over 22 years, and we remain resolute in delivering design efficiencies that assist our clients in maximizing their investment. We do this collaboratively, creatively, and responsively. We also remain focused on the long-term value we create for our clients. We appreciate the loyalty you have demonstrated, the passion for perfection in our staff, and we look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries.

TEG recently celebrated our twenty-second anniversary of the founding of TEG. Achieving that milestone felt pretty great, considering the current climate of economic uncertainty and unrest in the world. When TEG was founded, I never could have anticipated the enormous evolution that has occurred in the domain of facility planning and design, the complexity of building technologies, the extensive project teams it takes to deliver quality projects and the constant innovations of healthcare, education and all building types. Over the years, though, one thing is certain, TEG’s collaborative creative process has been an absolute keystone in meeting our client’s needs successfully.

Opportunity often takes many forms. For example, a fast-paced project idea was presented to us in early June 2011 to design a portion of a Software Development Building Campus in Chennai, India. This campus involved the planning and design of three buildings totaling over 1,000,000 square feet, as well as a 2,800-vehicle

In 2007 TEG was engaged as a partner in the analysis and development of a comprehensive site and facility master plan for the proposed Our Lady of Lourdes Replacement Hospital Campus. The team was subsequently engaged to design the Hospital, with TEG as Architect of Record.

This 186-bed, 414,000 sf facility rests on a 45-acre greenfield site and is structurally engineered for the future expansion of two additional floors. The site includes 1,500 parking spaces, and a 16,000 sf Central Energy Plant designed for future growth.

A unique Clinical Procedural Platform is located on the second floor, uniting the Surgery, Radiology/Imaging and Emergency Departments. 13 multi-function patient stations directly flex for surgery or ER, depending on patient volume. A 24-room ICU is located directly above on the third floor. With same-handed patient rooms and nursing pods that maximize adjacencies, this "right-sized" floor plan is designed to improve teamwork, organization,

patient flow, and communication, and minimize travel distances. Evidence-Based Design (EBD)principals demonstrate that this layout assists in reducing medical errors and improves patient safety.

A key facet of this project involved creating a healing environment incorporating psychological keys to comfort. Patients and guests will find creative uses of natural light, areas of respite and exterior terraces located throughout the campus. Large windows and skylights let in the restorative power of sunlight. Throughout the interior design, there are subtle references to faith and the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady, whose mission the hospital vows to fulfil.

On June 25, 2011, the Our Lady of Lourdes clinical team began seeing patients in this new dynamic facility, the culmination of over three and a half years of collaborative teamwork.

Masterplan New Projects

Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder, Louisiana worked with TEG on a site and facility master plan that demonstrated their current 4-bed Critical Care unit was not meeting their need. This was accomplished through analysis of historical volumes, projections, and benchmarking against similarly sized hospitals.

TEG is now working with BMH to develop an 8-bed, 7,750 square foot Critical Care unit addition on the first floor with convenient access to Surgical and Emergency Departments. The unit is arranged in a semi-circular layout with a curving nurse station that allows views into all 8 rooms. The design also features decentralized nurse workstations that allow better observation and

staffing flexibility. There are two bariatric capable rooms to accommodate additional volumes from a new bariatric surgeon.

TEG recently began the design process for the renovation of an existing former heart hospital for Kindred Healthcare in Dayton, Ohio. The project includes the conversion of the first floor Emergency Department, and will add Wound Care, and a Day Patient Area, as well as Rehabilitation Therapy. Additional spaces that will be renovated include Respiratory Therapy and a CT Room on the second floor, in addition to refurbishing the existing medical/surgical patient rooms to accommodate 12 new Intensive Care Unit beds and 39 Long-Term Acute Care beds. We will also develop a design to convert third floor med/surg beds into 16 Long-Term Acute Care beds and 37 Skilled Nursing Unit/Transitional Care Center beds. Lastly, Kindred

will be adding a new Administrative Suite and Boardroom. The entire project will encompass a total of approximately 132,000 square feet.

This $8 million project is due for completion in 2012.

Construction documents are underway for a two-story, 42,000 sf Proton Therapy Center addition to the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. The proton therapy system, housed in a 1-1/2 story concrete vault, consists of a cyclotron, beam transport system and gantry treatment delivery system. The first floor of the new addition will house the Proton Therapy Center and includes exam rooms, dressing areas, a special procedure room, administrative space, offices, training/conference room, consultation rooms, facility support areas and the treatment room/vault. The second floor will be shelled construction for future clinical/

physician use. Equipment support and storage areas for the proton system will be located above the vault. An alternate to include an additional third floor (10,570 sf) to the facility is being developed as part of the construction documents. Although the new addition is an expansion of the existing Cancer Center that was designed by TEG and constructed in 1999, a new entry, entrance drive and canopy will give the Proton Therapy

Center its own identity.

On June 28, Wayne Estopinal addressed a group of 80 Blue & Co. CFO’s in Cincinnati, who were attending a regional conference for small and rural hospitals. The presentation focused on addressing the demands placed upon healthcare organizations within the era of:

– Measured Patient Outcomes– Performance-Based Reimbursements– Sustainability and Responsibility– High-Performance Buildings– Efficiency and Productive Design– An Aging Caregiver Population– Fully-Integrated EHR/EMR– Evidence Based Design

As many of you know, as of the end of the first Quarter of 2011, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act became law, which directly impacts patient volumes, tightens margins, and scrutinizes outcomes. Additionally, a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and National Quality Improvement Strategy were formed. Only a week before this legislation, Wellpoint was featured in the Wall Street

Journal for “shaking things up” in the area of reimbursement increase criteria, impacting 1,500 hospitals, 34,000,000 patients in 14 states. Wayne’s presentation addressed how planning and design can be part of the solution to achieve the reimbursement benchmarks.

To that end, Wayne conveyed that well-designed patient rooms and ancillary departments can improve patient safety, staff workload, patient transport time, and average length of stay; concurrently, it can reduce travel distances, patient infection, medical errors, staff costs and unnecessary square footage. This doesn’t take into account what efficient design can do to save a facility in energy costs, and address Evidence Based Design’s role in validating these.

TEG will speak on the topic again at the Health Enterprises Network Process Improvement Workshop on October 27, and at the Midwest Healthcare Engineering Conference in Indianapolis, November 2-4, 2011.

SARAH BUSH LINCOLN HEALTH SYSTEMMattoon, Illinois

The first portion of Phase 1 was completed on September 1st. This portion of work was completed on time and on budget. The hospital is now benefitting from their new Speech and Hearing Department. Upcoming phases involve starting construction on Lab, Medical Records, Admitting and Phlebotomy located on Ground and First Level. Bids for the remainder of the project will be received by the owner.

UNION HOSPITAL CATH LABORATORY RENOVATIONTerre Haute, Indiana

The cath laboratory project is a renovation of Union Hospital's existing cath laboratory suite in place, to improve patient flow and staff efficiency. The new project will consist of 3 Catheterization Laboratory rooms and 1 Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory with shared equipment and support spaces. The compact design allows staff to move quickly from one room to the next and allows a smooth flow of patients from prep to procedure to recovery.

UNION HOSPITAL OBSTETRICS RENOVATIONTerre Haute, Indiana

The Obstetrics (OB) Renovation project consists of converting the previous surgery department to an OB triage, labor and delivery suite, and neonatal intensive care unit. The new design utilizes the existing operating rooms as eight Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) rooms and two Caesarian Section rooms. The triage consists of four recliner bays and five enclosed bays. The former PACU area has been converted into a 15-bay Neonatal Intensive Care unit. The new OB suite increases the hospital's labor and delivery and NICU capacity and gives it a fresh new look and feel.

TRINITY HEALTH CANCER CARE CENTERMinot, North Dakota

The Cancer Care Center expansion project in Minot, North Dakota is currently under construction, and steel erection is in progress. The City of Minot was recently in the national news for a few days due to major flooding in the region. Fortunately the Hospital and Cancer Center were spared major damage and the project is proceeding as planned.

David North, AIA, NCARB, Senior Architect – Healthcare David comes to us from the Columbus, Ohio area and has extensive experience in design and the timely administration and management of complex projects. These include pediatric hospitals, clinics and medical office buildings in Massachusetts, Texas, New York, Alabama, and Michigan. David’s significant expertise makes him a true asset to TEG.

Fawn Reeves Ward, KYCID, NCIDQ, LEED AP Fawn re-joins TEG as the department leader, offering her talent in all aspects of interior design, including AutoCAD, floor and finish plans, space planning, and artwork specification. In addition to her creative contributions to clients’ interior solutions, Fawn will play a central role in the development of new clients solely focused on interior renovations and “refreshments.” Some projects in her portfolio include: Clark Memorial Hospital, Union Hospital, and Bloomington Hospital.

Kyle Daugherty, Associate - Project Manager Kyle has also returned to TEG, having previously spent over 5 years with the firm. He is an experienced designer who has greatly contributed to some of TEG’s most complex projects, including the New Albany-Floyd County YMCA and Aquatics Center, Union Hospital HUX Cancer Center, Willis-Knighton Bossier Medical Pavilion, and LifeCare Hospital Idaho Intensive Care Center.

Stacy Rorick, Intern Stacy is from Fort Wayne, Indiana and received her undergraduate architecture degree from Ball State University, with a minor in Landscape Architecture. She will be returning to Ball State for her graduate studies in January.
