reflected ceiling plans

everyone has different styles of presentation

most important to communicate information CLEARLY and CONCISELY

your lighting plan must be read and understood by people who aren’t familiar with your design

Page 3: INTD 51 human environments applying lighting techniques.

reflected ceiling plans—guidelines step one:

start with the plan of a building or room with all walls and door swings as background (in a gray-tone or half-tone)•enables reading of the architecture without competing with the lighting layout•add all ceiling features, overhangs, skylights, beams…etc. that have bearing on your lighting plan (dashed lines)

step two:place the furniture in each room cannot do a viable lighting design without knowing where the furniture is placed•floor outlets•chandelier installation

don’t have to pick the style or fabric, just size and placement

selecting which walls will be used for hanging art is also important

step three:add luminaires and switching to your plan

add outlets to your plan

remember these symbols should be most prominent aspect of plan

don’t be stingy with the information

be sure to provide dimensions, distances and spacings of your luminaires with respect to architectural elements•symbols are not drawn to scale, so it may not be safe for installers to measure from plan•don’t make professionals measure every fixture location

show dimensions to be sure!!!

Page 9: INTD 51 human environments applying lighting techniques.

reflected ceiling plans—guidelinesshow dimensions to be sure!!

the more information you provide, the fewer questions and problems will arise during bidding and installation phases

create a library of symbols

draw your luminaires using clear and consistent lighting symbols

also use clear symbols for components such as switches, dimmers, floor outlets, etc…

step four:•create a legend for your design—make sure each symbol that you have used is represented in the legend

•be sure to include a symbol list or legend on the drawing

•if you have unusual luminaires, try to use a simple symbol—simplicity saves drawing time and less confusing

dealing with multiples of fixture types

example:half-circle always represents wall sconceif you have more than one style, designate each type with a letter

store your symbol library on your computer

building a database will save time on future jobs

participation activity:reflected ceiling plans

•using the provided floor plan and symbol library, follow steps 1-4 outlined today and create a functional and beautiful lighting plan

•remember all 4 of your light layers!!

•put completed plan in section 9 of your binder
