Turning Point’s annual Making Recovery a Reality Gala at Four Seasons, Vancouver is our major fundraising event each year and a significant part of our strategic initiative to raise the profile of addictions in our community. We find that when high profile speakers candidly share their own recovery experiences it encourages public dialogue about addictions and moves our community to a place of greater acceptance and understanding about addiction.

This past spring Rob Lowe was our Gala speaker. Rob charmed the sold-out audience sharing personal insights into his own recovery and enthusiastically participated in an impromptu Q&A. A heartfelt thank you to emcee Randene Neill, auctioneer Fred Lee, our guests and most importantly the many volunteers who made this evening possible.

TPR – Men’s House “What a fantastic year it has been for us at Turning Point. Our residents have been volunteering on a weekly basis at the Sharing Farm which is a beautiful natural oasis on the north western edge of Richmond. From planting the gardens in the spring, tending them in the summer, then harvesting the bounty in the fall it has been a wonderful practical learning experience for all.

In July, we teamed up with the women of our sister house in Richmond, and were privileged to be a part of the Salmon Festival Parade in Steveston. What a moving experience it was to see the men and women of Turning Point representing our organization and marching with pride in the parade.

In September, we organized a camping trip to Alouette Lake, which was an unforgettable experience for all our residents. We had the opportunity to go swimming and fishing in the pristine lake and had daily hikes out to a spectacular waterfall. We finished off our evenings with a nightly campfire meeting.

It has been a year in which we have had tremendous fun in sobriety and created memories that will last a lifetime.”

“In the spirit of assisting individuals to regain their independence, reach their full potential and become contributing members of society, Turning Point Vancouver House has seen a few changes in our program this year. Some of the more noteworthy highlights are as follows:

Joan Hopper started the “Writing Room” group as a complement to our weekly Art Therapy program run by Liza D’Aguilar. This group gives residents the opportunity to experiment with different types of writing (journaling, creative, dialogue etc.) in order to further understand themselves and explore healthier possibilities for interactions with others.

Ted Paxton started a new group on career planning, resume writing, and job search. Much attention is directed towards self-assessment. Through this, individuals are able to get a clearer understanding of their personal and work values, strengths and functional talents so that, with a plan, they can experience success reentering the workforce. “ David Chung, Counsellor

Did you know …• For every individual we serve, at least 5 others including family members, employers, and friends and the community at large benefit. That’s 15,000 people that have benefitted by the work of Turning Point since our inception in 1982. • Turning Point Recovery Society (1984) has officially changed its name to Turning Point Recovery Society.

Alumni MeetingsAs part of our continuing care program, Turning Point hosts weekly Alumni meetings at all of our sites for past residents, current residents and friends. If you are interested in sharing your recovery story, or would just like to reconnect with old friends, please call the respective Site Manager.

“TPR- W opened its doors November 28, 2011. Within our first week our 9 bed Richmond Women’s house was full and had a growing wait list. To date we have supported 52 women in finding recovery from drugs and alcohol.

Some highlights of our year include; a warm and wonderful Christmas with the residents who received gift bags and stockings donated by generous agencies and individuals from throughout the Lower Mainland. We had a full house of residents, family and friends for Easter dinner and in the spring the residents dug out a garden, planted vegetables by seed and were able to enjoy the harvest throughout the summer and fall. For Halloween we had a traditional pumpkin carving group and all expectations are that Santa will be just as kind to the women this year as last year.

With thanks to support from Face the World Foundation, the City of Richmond and Green Shield Social Surplus Program, we were able to add the Seeking Safety group to our Domestic Violence Substance Abuse program. We have also

incorporated a SMART Recovery group, morning walks, meditation/relaxation period, employment readiness program and an Alumni group in addition to our other bio/psycho/social/spiritual and 12 step programming.

As Site Manager I am proud to say that we have a very dedicated and hardworking staff at TPRW that has remained with us through our whole first year. Thank you to Sheena, Morgan, Lisa, Ronda, Sheila, our co-workers at Turning Point’s other sites. Thanks also to Admin staff and the Board of Directors. Together we are making recovery a reality!”

The Honourable Minister of Health, Margaret MacDiarmid, enjoys a conversation with a client during a recent visit to TP-Vancouver.

This year we are thrilled to announce actress/author Ashley Judd as our special guest speaker. Ashley brings a new perspective to our speaker series – her story is not one of personal substance use, but one of recovery from a childhood impacted by unhealthy family dynamics. “Because someone carried the message of recovery to me, and helped me begin to learn about family systems and how affected I was by other people’s addictions of various kinds, I have learned that I, too, can recover”. For more information and tickets phone TP Administration at 604 303-6844.
