INSYNC CENTRAL FUNCTIONALITY 3
Overview
I am currently an instructional designer and instructional producer with InSync Training.
InSync focuses on virtual instructor led programs. We deliver various courses for companies
and individuals looking for certification in Instructional Design, Facilitation, Production, and
Blended Learning Instructional Design. With all of these courses we utilize Moodle™ as our
learning management system. During this assignment we will call Moodle™ by the name
InSync Central (ISC) as that is how it is referred to by the facilitation, production, and
administration staff at InSync.
All of our course participants are required to use InSync Central for asynchronous
components of the programs including finding and uploading assignments as well as posting to
discussion boards. It is preferred that all participants log in prior to the first live (online) class
and update their profile and download the learning journal for the course. Additionally, at the
end of the first 2-hour class, we have to spend 10-15 minutes doing a brief demonstration for
students on how to navigate in ISC.
This self paced e-learning module would be housed on our website so that all participants
would receive a link with the welcome email and be required to complete it prior to the first live
session. It would eliminate the need to use valuable class time for demonstrating ISC
functionality. The goal of the module is to demonstrate the process of logging into ISC and
accessing their profile and updating the information. The module will also cover the concepts of
posting to discussion board, downloading content, and uploading assignments.
This program is being created after 360 evaluations have shown that most facilitators
have to rush through actual program content of the first session to complete the ISC tour.
INSYNC CENTRAL FUNCTIONALITY 4
Learners, Context, and Learning Objectives
Learners
The targeted learners are new students in InSync Training courses. The age of learners is
varied from 20 years old to 60 years old. They are new or seasoned professionals that typical
work in some type of training or development role. As InSync is a virtual training company and
all of our programs are delivered virtually, all students are expected to have basic computer
skills. Those skills and additional learner traits are listed in Table 1 below.
Additionally, these learners are expected to be motivated to participate in all required
components of the program as they have typically chosen to attend the programs as they are not
mandatory for any organization.
Table 1. Learner Analysis. Category Learner Capability or Trait
Motivation Individuals who take this course will be self motivated. Attitude Generally speaking, these learners will have a positive attitude toward
learning about the topic related to synchronous virtual training. Communication Skills Learners are expected to be able to communicate appropriately.
Learners should have at least a Social Skills Learners are expected have average social skills Media Preferences Learners should be accepting of mixed media methods for education.
A balance of graphics, video, voice, and text are the assumed preference.
Learning Conditions Learner will need access to a computer with audio (speakers) capabilities. They will need to be able to operate that computer and use internet explorer or other internet browser.
Digital Fluency It is expected that the learners are skilled with today’s technology. They need to have experience navigating around the internet. They are expected to be digitally fluent.
The targeted learner has been determined by reviewing the past history of participants in
InSync programs. There have been approximately 2000 different learners in InSync courses.
INSYNC CENTRAL FUNCTIONALITY 5
Context
This program is expected to be a self paced e-learning module developed with Articulate
Storyline. The module will include demonstration and guided practice. Because this course is
going to be the first step in attending any InSync course that uses ISC the only prerequisite is to
be enrolled in a valid InSync program.
The e-learning module will allow for practice in the module itself but also prompt
students to complete go out to ISC and complete the steps for their actual program. By setting
up the ISC programs to allow for students to upload a photo, update their profile, and write an
introductory blog we will be able to confirm completion of the program.
The use of Storyline to create the program is based on my experience and the experience
of my fellow coworkers (designers). The program will most likely be housed on our website as
we don’t want to require participants to log in to ISC to access it. Participants are required to
have access to ISC before completing the program as there will be times in the module that will
have the student go to ISC to complete a task that is being demonstrated.
Learning Objectives
Following Mager guidelines to create the objectives for this program, these are the objectives for
the program.
• Given a provided user name and password, you (the InSync student) will log in to ISC
and change password of account. Successful completion will be continued access to your
ISC account. Once successfully logged in participants will have access to their main
course page.
INSYNC CENTRAL FUNCTIONALITY 6
• Given the successful access to your ISC account, you (the student) will update profile
information including adding photo, details, and updating time zone. Successful
completion will be an updated student profile.
• Given a proper demonstration, you (the student) will navigate within your main course
page to find each module assignment and discussion board, and reference documents.
Successful completion will be to find the appropriate discussion boards and post
according to the weekly assignments.
• Given a proper demonstration, you (the student) will navigate within your main course
page to find informational documents for downloading. Successful completion will be to
find and download the learning journal for the program.
• Given a proper demonstration, you (the student) will post to discussion forum and
respond to other posts from students. Successful completion will be to successfully post
your first discussion board.
• Give a proper demonstration, you (the student) will upload documents for any required
assignments. Successful completion will be the uploading of any one of the mandatory
assignments.

Stage Criteria Explanation
PROBLEM Is the courseware presented in the context of real world problems?
Does the courseware show learners the task they will be able to do or the problem they will be able to solve as a result of completing a module or course? Task to be completed/what they will do
This module shows the individual tasks that need to be taken in order to complete all asynchronous assignments for their upcoming program.
Are students engaged at the problem or task level not just the operation or action levels? Task level
Does the courseware involve a progression of problems rather than a single problem? Single
RATING FOR PROBLEM STAGE: Bronze
ACTIVATION Does the courseware attempt to activate relevant prior knowledge or experience?
Does the courseware direct learners to recall, relate, describe, or apply knowledge from relevant past experience that can be used as a foundation for new knowledge?
This module allows learners to complete the assessment components without going through the demonstrations. The learner would be using prior knowledge to complete the work.
Does the courseware provide relevant experience that can be used as a foundation for the new knowledge? Related to other forums/discussion boards
If learners already know some of the content are they given an opportunity to demonstrate their previously acquired knowledge or skill? Test out is possible
RATING FOR ACTIVATION STAGE: Bronze
INSYNC CENTRAL FUNCTIONALITY 37
Stage Criteria Explanation
DEMONSTRATION Are the demonstrations (examples) consistent with the content being taught?
Are the demonstrations (examples) consistent with the content being taught? • Examples and non-examples for
concepts? • Demonstrations for procedures? • Visualizations for processes? • Modeling for behavior?
Demonstrations used
The demonstrations are modeling of the tasks to be completed. Media is relevant to content. Assessment components are done in the live site and not in module. Practice is done in the module to confirm understanding before moving on.
Are at least some of the following learner guidance techniques employed? • Learners are directed to relevant
information? • Multiple representations are used for
the demonstrations? • Multiple demonstrations are
explicitly compared?
Is media relevant to the content and used to enhance learning? Media is relevant
RATING FOR DEMONSTRATION STAGE: Bronze
INSYNC CENTRAL FUNCTIONALITY 38
Stage Criteria Explanation
APPLICATION Are the application (practice) and the posttest consistent with the stated or implied objectives?
Are the application (practice) and the posttest consistent with the stated or implied objectives? • Information-about practice requires
learners to recall or recognize information.
• Parts-of practice requires the learners to locate, name, and/or describe each part.
• Kinds-of practice requires learners to identify new examples of each kind.
• How-to practice requires learners to do the procedure.
• What-happens practice requires learners to predict a consequence of a process given conditions, or to find faulted conditions given an unexpected consequence.
How-to practice requires learners to do work
Assessments all relate to the implied objectives. The how-to practices are actually requiring the learner to complete the actual tasks in the live environment. The help page links to an email for the site administrator. Also will list the note to contact producer as a resource.
Does the courseware require learners to use new knowledge or skill to solve a varied sequence of problems and do learners receive corrective feedback on their performance?
In most application or practice activities, are learners able to access context sensitive help or guidance when having difficulty with the instructional materials? Is this coaching gradually diminished as the instruction progresses? Access to administrator via email and producer via email.
RATING FOR APPLICATION STAGE: Silver
