Insurance Claims by State This diagram is a map of the US with the individual states shaded to represent insurance losses for the previous year. Diagram Flow The diagram is made up of two pages, the first is the US map with all the states. Each of the states is color coded to show the range of losses, with the larger loss being darker red. For states with a green check mark (Washington) you can right click on that state and follow the hyperlink to get the state’s county level details. The county detail page has the same format as the State level, each county is color coded to show the insurance loss. To get back to the County map, right click on the county icon in the upper left and follow the hyperlink. Data The data resides in an Excel file named “Insurance Claims by State Data.vsd.xls”. The data is on two tables. Table “US States” has the following columns: State Overall Status – A numerical value of 0 to 4 representing the loss 2006 Loss – Total dollar amount 2005 Loss – Total dollar amount County Detail – Yes/No, if yes, then that state has its county details published The “Washington” table has the following columns: County Name Overall Status – A numerical value of 0 to 4 representing the loss 2006 Loss – Total dollar amount 2005 Loss – Total dollar amount Data Graphics There are three different data graphics used in this diagram.

Overall Status – This is a color by value element that displays up to 5 colors for the varying amount of losses.
County Detail – This is an icon set that gives a visual indication that a state has the county breakdown details.
Data Graphic - TotalsThis data graphic is made up of three elements and is applied to the US map shape.
State – This is a text element that displays the title of the shape. 2006 Loss – This is a text element that shows the 2006 loss. 2005 Loss – This is a text element that shows the 2006 loss.

Refreshing DataOriginally the Visio Drawing and Data files were placed in the following directory “C:\ Financial Services”. To refresh the data when the data file resides in a different location use the following steps:
1. Right Click on the External Data window and choose “Configure Refresh”2. Click “Change Data Source…”3. Choose “Microsoft Office Excel workbook”, then click “Next >”4. Click “Browse…”, navigate to and select “Insurance Claims by State
Data.vsd.xls”, then click “Open”5. Click “Next >”6. Click “Ok” to select a new data source7. With “US States$” as the range you want to use, and “First row of data contains
column headings” checked, Click “Next >”8. Click “Next >” to include all columns and all data9. Click “Finish” to exit the Data Selector10. Click “Ok” to exit the Refresh Data dialog11. Repeat steps 1 to 10 with the table “Washington”.12. Right Click on the External Data window and choose “Refresh Data” to refresh
the data in the drawing.
