Introduction Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) is a sensitive

multi-element analytical technique used for both

qualitative and quantitative analysis of major, minor,

trace and rare elements

NAA was discovered in 1936 by G. Hevesy

(Hungary) and H. Levi (Denmark)

Forms of NAA

Destructive ( radiochemical ) - the resulting radioactive

sample is chemically decomposed, and the elements are

chemically separated

Nondestructive ( instrumental ) - the resulting

radioactive sample is kept intact

Applications of INAA at FLNP

Environmental studies (migration of pollutants in

ecosystems, air pollution studies using moss-biomonitors)

Biotechnology for medicine (development of new

pharmaceuticals and sorbents)

Material Science (high purity materials, nanoparticles

and objects of national heritage)

Sample preparation

Samples were prepared for irradiation at the chemical laboratory of the

FLNP according to the following procedure

1. Samples were cleaned of all external contamination

2. Small amounts of samples were put in a vial and then sealed.

3. The vial was put in a press, to pelletize the samples.

4. Each sample pellet was weighed to approximately 0.3 g dry-

weight and their masses were recorded.

5. For short-term irradiation; samples were heat-sealed in

polyethylene bags and for long-term irradiation; they were packed

in aluminium foil cups.

6. Samples were then taken to the reactor for irradiation.
