Afteraperiodoftime,scalerssimplywearout,duetouseandsharpeningsincethetipgetsthinnerandthinneraftereachsharpening.Ascalerorcuretteusedandsharpenedregularlyshouldbereplacedwithin6-9months.
Curettesaredesignedwitharoundedtoeforpatientcomfortduringsubgingivalscaling.Sharpeningcanturnthis“toe”intoapointandcausepatientdiscomfortwhenusedsubgingivally.
