EDITOR’S NOTEHi there!

It’s been wonderful to see the training grounds brimming with keen faces over the past month. We’ve scattered photos from training all throughout this edition – enjoy!

It’s particularly lovely to see so many families and children here to learn about training their furry family member. To encourage everyone to get involved with their dog, Hills is proud to present a children’s information night on 30 April. This informative night will cover safety with dogs, including safe handling, playing and basic dog care. Don’t miss out – please return the slip on page 12 to book your child’s spot!

We are excited to announce the return of our instructor feature series; a chance for you to find out more about the club instructors and what makes them tick. This month we thought you’d like a peek into the head of the Howler producer himself – Tony! Turn to page 3 for this fun feature.

Chief instructor Dianne has shared with us a must-teach exercise for all dogs. Really, truly! Check out page 5 and you’ll know what we mean.

Lastly, do you fancy yourself a writer? Journalist? Cartoonist? Or perhaps you are involved in a dog-related activity or cause you would like to share with us. We at the Howler are dedicated to providing you with informative and entertaining content. If you have something to share or would like to get involved, please drop us a line at [email protected].

Happy training! Ellen and Tony Editorial Team

IT JUST WORKS By Ellen Mok

Club instructor and Howler designer Tony Vink talks about fatherhood, greatness and how he accidentally trained his cat.

The time of the interview wasn’t planned in advance; I sent Tony a message and he replied almost instantly. “I have an hour now… then kids pick up.” Done. The next message I received indicated that he was jumping up and running to the car. He must have done so, because when I entered the café he was already seated, with flat white and caramel slice on order.

It seems to be typical of the Dutch father-of-two (three, including Cinnamon the dog). A stay-at-home dad with hobbies more numerous than one can imagine, he is used to slotting his day’s schedule together and changing it on the fly.

“It’s a hard job, staying at home and doing the housework and

the kids and the homework and the projects that they have to do,” he tells me. Today is no different. “Today is swimming after school at half past three, that means I have to dash and get the swimming costumes and towels and stuff… and this morning I had to go with my son to test going on the bus for the first time…” he recounts the story of a missing bus and a call to his mother-in-law for help. “But that’s the type of work – make the lunch boxes, make dinner at night, clean the house – that’s my job!”

Born in the Netherlands to Dutch parents, Tony was to follow them around the world as his father worked for a multinational company. He began kindergarten speaking Spanish in Venezuela, but then learned English in primary school in Trinidad.

It was there that his family got their first dog. “A little mongrel pup came to live with us,” he explains. “I remember that she had pups a couple of weeks before we left!”

The next stop was Iran. “We lived in a compound for Dutch expats, with our own little school and two Dutch teachers. I remember I picked up a stray kitten there one day too. The gardener used to smoke the leaves of one of our trees... but not the stuff you're thinking of!”

...good design, you don’t see it. It’s invisible. It just

works.

p. 4 HILLS HOWLER - MARCH 2018

It’s not hard to imagine the earnest, irrepressible Tony as a child bringing home a kitten determined to keep it. Nor does it surprise me that the list of animals increases.

He began secondary schooling in Belgium. “We had cats in those days, and a tortoise, and mice, and chickens and budgies and fish and I was one of the youngest members of the pigeon racing club. We had two lofts for racing and breeding them.”

“Oh,” he adds, “we had some ducks too – I won them at a fun fair. Which is where we got the chickens and goldfish from too.”

It’s been a bit of a change for Tony since he moved to Australia in 2013. Before that, he worked as a graphic designer in South Africa. Although he no longer does it for a living, he still jumps on graphic design opportunities for the joy of it. Producing the Howler is just one example.

“I get a kick out of producing something that looks nice and people will read. It’s almost like a little work of art, every time.”

And he is passionate about good design. “If you see a good design, you don’t see it. It’s invisible. It just works. You can read it… it’s not something you say, ‘ooh, this is a great

design.’”

The same applies to public speaking, another hobby of his. “It’s like, ‘oh, this is a great speaker.’ If someone said that, then yeah, it’s good. But a great speaker

you can listen to for 3 hours and at the end of it say, ‘oh, are we done already?’ So, it’s subtle.”

“Those are the things that I enjoy,” he continues. “I’m not there yet – I know that. But those are the things I’d love to be able to do.”

It strikes me that design and speaking are not the only things that contain subtleties. Tony’s chatty and easy-going exterior are supported by a true appreciation for excellence and maybe a touch of perfectionism.

He recognises it, too. When he first came to Hills to train his four-month-old pug mix, he wanted to know everything about dog training. He had done a lot of reading and self-study, but was thrilled to find mentors knowledgeable about positive training and the science behind it – something he hadn’t found in South African dog training clubs at the time.

Back then, he had experimented with clicker training on his own. But there were a few surprises. “There was nowhere that could teach me anything,” he explains. “I got it wrong a few times, and you start to get desperate – then you use your clicker as a recall mark.” His dog at the time, a Sheltie named Toby, was evidently not impressed.

But Tony wasn’t done. “Eventually it did work for recalling my cat – so I did some training. In fact, I did manage to train my cat at the time to go

Exercise:

1. While the dog is chewing on a toy, approach him without saying anything and reach towards him with a food treat in your hand.

2. Put the treat near his nose so he smells it.

3. As the dog lets go of the toy, say your command (drop it, give it to me, let go) and give the dog the treat.

4. When the dog takes the treat pick up the toy.

5. Then return the toy to him.

This teaches the dog that when you approach and reach towards him, good things happen (the treat) and by giving him back his toy he learns you’re not going to take everything away from him.

You can also use a favourite toy instead of always using a food treat for variety, and swap one toy for the one he is holding.

get trained – they just want to train the dog.”

“Because I know what I’d like – but I’m not training myself, I’m training other people. If I was training people who were exactly like me, maybe it was different.”

Tony’s not sure what a class of people exactly like him would be like – and neither am I. But one thing’s for sure – it wouldn’t be boring.

GIVE ME THAT.by Dianne Atkins February 2018

Most puppies learn to protect objects of value by the way we approach and take things away from them at an early age. Try not to grab objects from your puppy’s mouth but teach him to “give you that”. When a new puppy comes into your home it is important to teach him how to let go of objects when you ask him to. This is also important if you bring an older dog into your home. He might already have a strong possession instinct due to early training.

To prevent this, it is important to teach puppies to give up objects. Daily practice with

a high rate of reinforcement is very important in the early learning stages. By teaching him to “drop it” you will help to prevent unwanted games such as keep away or catch- me-if-you-can. Teaching children in the household

how to get a puppy to drop objects will prevent them from chasing him around, and will stop those unwanted games dogs so enjoy playing.

These can be very frustrating for you as an owner. But, if you teach your dog to drop whatever he is holding, you will then have a dog that will not run from you or hang onto things that do not belong to him.

Prevention training is important. Even if you can take things from your puppy now, it does not necessarily mean you will be able to six months later. Your efforts will be rewarded with a safe adult dog in your family.

sit on a pillow on cue, just by using the clicker.”

It’s no surprise that he embraced the opportunity to become a club instructor through the instructor’s course. But he knows not everyone shares his thirst for the theory behind training.

“If people are interested, I’ll explain [the science] to them, otherwise people don’t want that – they want a dog trained. They don’t want to know what the reason is, why this is trained or how come it can

BOOK REVIEW.Horrie the Wog-Dog: The Original TailBy Ion IdriessETT Imprint, 2017

Reviewed by Ellen Mok

Horrie the Wog-Dog is a true story taken from the diary of Private J.B. Moody of the 6th division, A.I.F. in WWII. The story opens with Moody and his fellow dispatch-rider in the desert of Egypt. There, against all odds in the harsh surrounds, they find a small, white dog. As soon as they smuggle him back to camp the little dog is christened Horrie the Wog-Dog and immediately becomes the unofficial mascot of the 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion.

Readers don’t need familiarity with military matters to enjoy this book. Complete with Aussie slang, we are taken on Horrie’s journey as he is smuggled, marched and paraded with his mates across Egypt, Greece, Syria and Palestine.

Horrie’s antics will make the most wizened soldier smile; an incident where Horrie lifts his leg on a corporal’s freshly polished boots may seem oddly familiar to many readers. Moody’s embarrassment when Horrie growls at friendly strangers may also ring a few bells.

On the other hand, the challenge of hiding a dog in camp, through parades and inspections, even on board ship is novel and truly suspenseful.

In return, Horrie’s contribution to the troops includes alerting them to thieves and bombers and serving as a messenger. His keen ears and ability to run across camp and up mountains faster than a soldier proves invaluable.

This recount of the kindness and gentleness of the soldiers who cared for Horrie and risked so much to keep him as their companion is as touching as the indomitable spirit of this brave little dog.

wooden spoon. You may need to get your hands dirty at this point to combine it all into a ball. Roll out the dough mix between two sheets of baking paper to your desired thickness; make sure you sprinkle a little extra flour to stop it sticking.Get your cookie cutters out (l use ones shaped like bones) and cut out the shapes, placing them on a lined baking tray put them in the oven for about 20 minutes until they get a nice brown colour.Wait for them to cool a little and then Bon Appetit!

Hope your pups enjoy them! These biscuits are great and versatile. I recommend you keep them in the fridge, but you can also put some in the freezer to save for another time and they are great straight out of the freezer on a hot day.

Home Baked Tuna Treats For Dogs.

A large can of tuna in oil (must be in oil) - cheap one from Aldi. Throw in some rolled oats (the regular kind not

the fast cooking ones), some wholemeal or plain flour and a couple of eggs; mix to a stiff dough and press on to a baking tray lined with baking paper. Cook in a cool(ish) oven (about 200C) for around half to an hour - when you can smell it it is usually baked enough. I then leave it in the oven to cool as I like it to be really crispy. Break it up and store in the freezer in zip lock bags. You can add vegetables, parsley if you like - anything goes. I have also added other dry ingredients if I am low on rolled oats. If you add vegetables it is quite moist and not as easy to give to the dog (nor to have in your pocket).

ATTENTION TUES-DAY MEMBERS The Hills Council have informed us on TUESDAY 10TH APRIL the Council will be holding an event on the dog grounds. We will not be able to use our usual training area on this day. After some discussions with the council and our President our Club has received approval for us to use the terrace rings for classes on this day. The terrace rings are the grassed area above our usual training ground, close to Showground Rd and near the George Bell building and toilet block. As we are not allowed any access to our building no equipment

will be available for classes and sadly we will not be able to provide morning tea. You will not be able to drive to this area your usual way, instead of turning left beside the horticulture building you must drive past the Pavilion theatre and turn left at the road in front of the Harvey Lowe and continue down to the grassed area. If you are unsure of the location or how to access it please ask at the office, we hope to have someone directing you on the day.

We are extremely sorry for this disruption and hope you will attend training class on this day as it’s the last training day before the two week break for school holidays.

This is totally out of our control.
