SQL Server and Cascadia IT

There used to be an instance of SQL Server running on the Cascadia network that students could access through a View. Apparently, during last Fall quarter, this server crashed—hard—and this instance of SQL Server was lost. IT created another server to support SQL Server (stu-sql2) but believed that Dr. Brian Bansenauer was going to install and configure SQL Server. On the flip side Brian Bansenauer believed that IT was going to install SQL Server, because, you know, that is what they are paid to do.

So, now, jump ahead to Spring quarter of the last school year: when I asked both the IT department and Brian Bansenauer at the start of the quarter if SQL Server was available on the network both answered "Yes!" thinking the other had installed it. Of course, it isn't available, and the latest news it won't be available because neither side wants to go through the process of installing it. So, their answer to me is: "It's completely up to you to figure out how to go about teaching a SQL Server class without SQL Server being available at Cascadia."

After hours and hours of scrabbling, here's what I came up with…

A couple of weeks ago I sent you an email containing your personal Azure passkey and information how to register for Azure. If you don’t have this passkey information, see your Instructor and he will give it to you again.

Microsoft Azure: Account Setup and Pre-Requisites with Visual Studio

WHEN USING VISUAL STUDIO 2013 with AZURE

In order to get Microsoft Azure to play nice with other Microsoft applications that you already have installed (e.g., Visual Studio, SQL Server, etc.) there are a number of steps and pre-requisites that must be completed first, or you may find yourself having a difficult time of it, so it is recommended that you use a version of Visual Studio 2013 (the free Community version is perfectly okay, as well as Pro, Ultimate, Developer, Premium, etc.)

If you are using Visual Studio 2012, then you will have to install the Azure SDK. A compact version installs with Visual Studio 2013, so if you want additional Azure Tools you could also download and install it.

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• After you have successfully created an Azure account, login (using your Microsoft username and

password) to the Azure Management Portal at:

• On the Azure Management Portal, at the bottom left of the web page,

• click + NEW then

• click COMPUTE, click VIRTUAL MACHINE, click FROM GALLERY.

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• Select a Server and instance of SQL Server (I selected SQL Server 2012 Standard, but you might select it

or something else, like SQL Server 2014 Standard)

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• Give your Virtual Machine a name (e.g., bit275), and create a username and password that you will

remember (the Password must contain an upper-case letter, lower-case letter, number, and special character like an exclamation point)

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• Your virtual machine will start installing with the Status of Starting (Provisioning)

• Expect the virtual machine status to proceed through:• Starting (Provisioning)• Stopped• Starting (Provisioning)• Running (Provisioning)• Running

NOTE: This cycle through the Status process may take up to 20-30 minutes to complete.

hand corner, then selecting Details

• After your virtual machine has been successfully created, select OK

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• When provisioning completes, click on the name of your virtual machine to go to the DASHBOARD

page. At the bottom of the page, click Connect to create a remote desktop .RDP file (see next slide)

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• Save the remote desktop .RDP file locally by selecting Save File (if not already selected) then OK. Copy

or move this file somewhere where you can access it easily (USB thumb drive or desktop on your personal laptops, NOT on the Cascadia PC desktop because you don’t want to lose it).

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• Double-click on the .RDP file to open• Use the name of the machine as the domain name, followed by your administrator name in this format:

machinename\username. Type your password and connect to the machine.

• The first time you log on, several processes will complete, including setup of your desktop, Windows updates, and completion of the Windows initial configuration tasks (sysprep). After Windows sysprep completes, SQL Server setup completes configuration tasks. These tasks make cause a delay of a few minutes while they complete. SELECT @@SERVERNAME may not return the correct name until SQL Server setup completes, and SQL Server Management Studio may not be visable on the start page.

• At the “The publisher of this remote connection can’t be identified” window, click Connect

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• At the “Enter your credentials” window, enter the name of your virtual server followed by a bask-slash \

and then the username and password you created previously.

• Once you are connected to the virtual machine with Windows Remote Desktop, the virtual machine works much like any other computer. Connect to the default instance of SQL Server with SQL Server Management Studio (running on the virtual machine) in the normal way

lower left-hand corner to change to the Start Screen.

Creating a Virtual Server with SQL Server• You are now free to start creating and managing databases in the Azure cloud!

Turning off Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration

Keeping the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration enabled on your servers is recommended to help ensure that your servers are not inadvertently exposed to malware or other browser-based attacks. However, in some environments you might wish to turn off the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration protections to enable easier browsing for administrators or standard users.

To turn off Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration

1. Close any Internet Explorer browser windows that you might have open.

2. Open Server Manager

3. If your server is running Windows Server® 2008 R2, in the Security Information section of Server Summary, click Configure IE ESC to open the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration dialog.

If your server is running Windows Server® 2012, click Configure this local server to open the Local Server configuration page. Then, in the Properties area, next to IE Enhanced Security Configuration, click On to open the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration dialog.

4. To allow members of the local Administrators group to use Internet Explorer in its default client configuration, under Administrators click Off.

To allow members of all other groups to use Internet Explorer in its default client configuration, under Users click Off.

Note

Once the Internet Explorer Enhanced Configuration is turned off for one set of users, Server Manager will display Off next to Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration.

5. Click OK to apply your changes.
