    10

    Correct use

The cooktop gets hot when in use and remains hot for a whileafter being switched off. There is a danger of burning until theresidual heat indicators go out.

Oil and fat can overheat and catch fire. Do not leave the cooktopunattended when cooking with oil and fat. If it does ignite, do notattempt to put the flames out with water.Switch off the cooktop and use a suitable fire blanket, saucepan lid, damp towel or similar to smother the flames.

The cooking process has to be supervised. A short term cookingprocess has to be supervised continuously.

Flames could set the grease filters of a rangehood on fire. Do notflambé under a rangehood.

Spray canisters, aerosols and other inflammable substances canignite when heated. Therefore do not store such items or substancesin a drawer under the cooktop. Cutlery inserts must be heat-resistant.

Do not heat an empty pan. Do not heat up food in closed containers e.g. tins or sealed jarson the cooktop, as pressure can build up in the containers, causingthem to explode.

Do not cover the cooktop, e.g. with a cooktop cover, a cloth orprotective foil. The material could catch fire, shatter or melt if thecooktop is switched on by mistake or if residual heat is still present.

  • Warning and Safety instructions

    11

When the cooktop is switched on, either deliberately or bymistake, or when there is residual heat present, there is a risk ofmetal items placed on the cooktop heating up. Depending on thematerial, other items left on the appliance could also melt or catchfire. Damp pan lids might adhere to the ceramic surface and bedifficult to dislodge. Do not use the cooktop as a resting place foranything else. Switch the cooktop off after use and do not rely on thepan detector.

You could burn yourself on the hot cooktop. Protect your handswith heat-resistant pot holders or oven gloves when handling hotpots and pans. Do not let them get wet or damp, as this causes heatto transfer through the material more quickly with the risk of scaldingor burning yourself.

When using an electrical appliance, e.g. a hand-held food mixer, near the cooktop, ensure that the cable of the electrical appliancecannot come into contact with the hot cooktop. The insulation on thecable could become damaged.

Grains of salt, sugar and sand (e.g. from cleaning vegetables) cancause scratches if they get under pan bases. Make sure that theceramic surface is clean before placing pans on it.

Even a light object can cause damage in certain circumstances.Do not drop anything on the ceramic surface.

Placing hot pans on the sensors and indicators could damage theelectronics underneath. Do not place hot pans on the sensors orindicators.

  • Warning and Safety instructions

    12

Do not allow solid or liquid sugar, or pieces of plastic or aluminiumfoil to get onto the cooktop when it is hot, as they can damage theceramic surface when it cools down. If this should occur, switch offthe appliance and scrape off all the sugar, plastic or aluminiumresidues whilst still hot, using a shielded scraper blade suitable foruse on glass. Wear oven gloves when doing this. Allow the ceramicsurface to cool down and then clean it with a suitable ceramiccooktop cleaning agent.

Pans which boil dry can cause damage to the ceramic glass. Donot leave the cooktop unattended whilst it is being used.

Only use pots and pans with smooth bases. Rough bases willscratch the ceramic glass.

Lift pans into position on the cooktop. Sliding them into place cancause scuffs and scratches.

Because induction heating works extremely quickly, the base ofthe pan could heat up to the temperature at which oil or fat self-ignites within a very short time. Do not leave the cooktop unattendedwhilst it is being used.

Heat oil or fat for a maximum of one minute. Never use theBooster function to heat oil or fat.

For people fitted with a heart pacemaker: please note that thearea immediately surrounding the cooktop is electromagneticallycharged when it is switched on. It is very unlikely to affect apacemaker. However, if in any doubt, consult the manufacturer ofthe pacemaker or your doctor.

To prevent damage to items which are susceptible toelectromagnetic fields, e.g. credit cards, digital storage devices, pocket calculators, etc., do not leave them in the immediate vicinityof the cooktop.

  • Induction

    25

How it worksInduction coils are located under theceramic surface. These coils create amagnetic field that reacts directly withthe base of the pan and heats it up. Theceramic surface itself is heated upindirectly by the heat given off by thepan.

The position, size and shape of the potsand pans are recognised automaticallyby the induction cooktop.

An induction cooktop only works whena pan with a magnetic base is placedon it (see “Induction - Cookware”).

The pan base material and the positionsof the pans on the cooktop affect thepower of the induction coils. This canaffect the cooking behaviour.

Risk of burning due to hot items! When the cooktop is switched on,either deliberately or by mistake, orwhen there is residual heat present, there is a risk of metal items placedon the cooktop heating up.Do not use the cooktop as a restingplace for anything else. After use, switch the cooktop off withthe  sensor control.

    Cookware

    Pan size

Round pans should preferably have abase diameter from 145 mm up to amaximum of 350 mm. Pans with a basediameter between 100 mm and 145 mmwill not be detected in every position onthe cooktop.

Oval/Square pans must not exceeddimensions of 380 mm x 300 mm.

    Suitable pans

    - stainless steel pans with a base thatcan be magnetised

    - enamelled steel pans

    - cast iron pans

Please be aware that the properties ofthe pan base can affect the evennesswith which the food heats up (e.g. whenmaking pancakes). The base of the panmust be able to distribute the heatevenly. A sandwich base made ofstainless steel is particularly suitable.

  • Induction

    26

    Unsuitable pans

    - stainless steel pans with a basewhich cannot be magnetised

    - aluminium or copper pans

    - glass, ceramic or earthenware potsand pans

    Testing cookware

To test whether a pot or pan is suitablefor use on an induction cooktop, hold amagnet to the base of the pan inseveral different places. If the magnetsticks, the pan is generally suitable.

    Unsuitable pan indicator

When the cooktop is switched on andyou place a pan on it but thecorresponding number display does notappear:

    - the diameter of the base of the pan istoo small, or

    - the pan is unsuitable

    Useful tips

    - Use only pots and pans with smoothbases. Rough bases can scratch theceramic glass.

    - Always lift the pans to move them. This will help prevent scratching. Ifany scratches do appear as a resultof pans being pushed around, thiswill not affect the function of thecooktop. These scratches are normalsigns of use and are not grounds formaking a complaint.

    - Please note that the maximumdiameter quoted by manufacturersoften refers to the diameter of the toprim of the pot or pan. The diameter ofthe base (generally smaller) is moreimportant.

    - Where possible, use pans withvertically straight sides. If a pan hasangular sides, induction also acts onthe sides of the pan. The sides of thepan may discolour or the coatingmay peel off.

  • Induction

    27

NoisesThe following noises can occur in thepan, depending on what it is made ofand how it has been constructed.

On the higher power levels, theappliance might buzz. This willdecrease or cease altogether when thepower level is reduced.

If the pan base is made of layers ofdifferent materials (e.g. in a sandwichedbase), it might emit a cracking sound.

You might hear a clicking sound fromthe electronic switches, especially onlower power levels.

You might hear a whirring sound whenthe cooling fan switches on. It switcheson to protect the electronics when thecooktop is being used intensively. Thefan may continue to run after theappliance has been switched off.

  • Tips on saving energy

    28

    - Use a lid whenever possible tominimise heat loss.

    - Select a smaller pan when cookingsmall quantities. A smaller pan usesless energy than a larger pan withvery little in it.

    - Cook with as little water as possible.

    - Once food has come to the boil orthe oil in the pan is hot enough forfrying, reduce the heat to a lowersetting.

    - Use a pressure cooker to reducecooking times.

  • Power level range

    29

The cooktop is programmed with 9 power levels at the factory. If you wish to fine-tune a setting, you can extend the power level range to 17 power levels (see“Programming”).

These settings should only be taken as a guide. The power of the induction coils will varydepending on the pan base size and material and the positions of the pans on the cooktop. For this reason, it is possible that the settings will need to be adjusted slightly to suit yourpans. As you use the cooktop, you will get to know which settings suit your pans best. When using new pans that you are not familiar with, set the power level below the onespecified.

  • Operation

    30

Operating principlesThis ceramic cooktop is equipped withelectronic sensor controls which reactto finger contact. For safety reasons, when switching the appliance on, theOn/Off  sensor needs to be touchedfor a little longer than the other sensors. Each time you touch a sensor, anacoustic signal sounds.

Only the printed On/Off  symbol isvisible when the cooktop is switchedoff. More sensor controls light up whenthe cooktop is switched on.

Malfunction due to dirty and/orcovered sensor controls. If the sensor controls are dirty orcovered this could cause them to failto react, to activate a functioninadvertently or even to switch theappliance off automatically (see“Safety features – Safety switch-off”). Placing hot pans on the sensorcontrols/indicators can damage theelectronic unit underneath.Keep the sensor controls andindicators clean.Do not place anything over thesensor control or indicators.Do not place hot pans over thesensor controls or indicators.

    Positioning cookware

You can use a maximum of 6  pans atthe same time on this cooktop.

    Useful tips

    - You can position the pans anywhereon the useable surface of thecooktop.

    - We recommend switching thecooktop on first and then placing thepans on it. If you do this, the pans willbe detected more quickly by thecooktop.

    - If you are using several pans at once, position them as far apart aspossible. This will enable the cooktopto recognise each of themindividually.

    - Move pans on the cooktop one afterthe other, not all at the same time.

    - When you move a pan on thecooktop, the associated numericalkeybank lights up. The set powerlevel “goes along” with it.

    - Pans with a base diameter between100 and 145 mm will not be detectedin every position on the cooktop.

    Possible faults

You place a pan on the cooktop and theassociated numerical keybank does notappear.

The pan cannot be detected in thisposition because it is very small.

Reposition the pan. If it is still notdetected, use a different pan.

There are several pans on the cooktop. You place another pan on the cooktopand the  symbol lights up.

The pans are too close together.

    Reposition the pans.

Move pans on the cooktop one afterthe other, not all at the same time.

You reposition a pan and the set powerlevel starts to flash.

    The pan cannot be detected.

Touch the flashing power level. If the power level continues to flash,

    reposition the pan.

You reposition a pan, the set powerlevel goes out and 0 lights up.

    Reset the power level.

    Problem Possible cause and remedy

    The cooktop cannot beswitched on.

There is no power to the cooktop. Check if the circuit breaker has tripped. Contact

an electrician or Miele (for the minimum fuserating, see data plate).

There may be a technical fault. Disconnect the cooktop from the mains electricity

supply for approx. 1 minute. To do this:– switch off at the wall socket and withdraw the

plug, or– switch off the mains circuit breaker or residual

current device. If, after switching the circuit breaker or residual

current device back on, the appliance will still notswitch on, contact a qualified electrician or Miele.

A smell and vapours aregiven off when the newappliance is being used.

The metal components have a protective coating. When the appliance is used for the first time, thiscauses a smell and possibly also vapour. Thematerial from which the induction coils are made alsogives off a smell in the first few hours of operation. This smell will be less noticeable with eachsubsequent use before dissipating completely. Thesmell and any vapours given off do not indicate afaulty connection or appliance and they are nothazardous to health.
