Instructions for Use Students will graph each equation using a graphing calculator. Then they will look at the graphs at the bottom of the page to find their answer. Be careful: there are incorrect answers mixed in with the correct ones! Students will eliminate the Zurich locations associated with their graph.

Solving the Case

When they have finished all 15 questions, students will have eliminated all but one location and will discover where Ms. Mann is hiding.

A P.I. R2 Mini-Mystery

Backstory

Ray Radicand is a Private Investigator and owner of an agency he calls R2 P.I. The Case of Ms. Mann’s Briefcase is the fourth and final part of a larger case. In the first activity (Solving Quadratics by Factoring) Ray and his assistants discovered that Ms. Mann had murdered Mr. Quad.

During the search of her home following this discovering, Ray and his team found Ms. Mann’s locked briefcase. Fortunately he also found some clues to the combination. In the second activity, students solve quadratic equations by completing the square and then solve a logic puzzle to unlock the briefcase.

In the briefcase, Ray discovered a message which students decoded by using the Quadratic Formula. This message led the student sleuths to Zurich where they are searching numerous famous locations to find the murderess Ms. Mann so she can be brought to justice.
