General InformationThis class introduces the basic features of Microsoft PowerPoint, producing multimedia slideshows for presentations to be delivered on a projection system, personal computer, or automated to run independently on a kiosk. Explores informational, educational, business, and personal presentations. Includes animations, transitions, and designs. However, the program can only go so far in creating a great presentation. It is up to you, the presenter, to understand what makes a good presentation. Here are some tips that can help you as you begin learning how to create presentations. And remember, the PowerPoint presentation should enhance what you are doing as the presenter - not replace you!

You will be working through all of the chapters of the textbook. It is important that you carefully read the material as you are completing the step-by-step instructions throughout each chapter. There are lots of tidbits of valuable information in the text that can be easily overlooked if you are only doing the step-by-step instructions. All of your lessons/assignments are to be saved to your USB. At the end of each chapter’s assignments below, you are to ask your instructor for her USB so you may save all of your presentations there to be graded. Make a folder for each chapter and have your last name at the first of the file name (lastname_Chapter1). Copy to her USB the entire folder for each chapter. You will NOT print unless told to do so. Your instructor should have had the data files available for you to copy by chapter to your USB. This is a one-credit class scheduled for five weeks.

Prerequisites

• Recommended placement into RD115 and WR115. Audit is available.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, student will be able to: 1. Use Microsoft PowerPoint to create personal and/or business on-screen presentations following current professional and/or industry standards. 2. Use critical thinking skills to independently design and create on-screen presentations.

Course Contents

This instructional packet is your road map for the course. Always have it available in class so that you are following correct procedures and completing the correct work. Reading your textbook and planning your work out of class allows maximum computer time.

Course Requirements

In order to complete this course and earn a grade, you must complete all course requirements. The Scoring Guide in your student folder will be used to assess your work and is the basis for your final grade.

In order to earn a grade for this course, you must:

1. Sign the Academic Integrity Statement in your student folder. 2. Read each chapter and work through the assigned exercises. 3. Complete three parts of the Final Project.

This course meets for five hours per week for five weeks. The one hour lab time will be arranged by your instructor. Plan to spend an additional four hours per week outside of class in order to complete this course. A total of a minimum of nine hours per week should be your time commitment to this course.

Instructional Materials

• Textbook: Microsoft PowerPoint 2013: Level 1, Publisher: Labyrinth Learning, ISBN-13: 978-1-59136-494-8.

Additional required supplies: USB drive (no floppy disks or CDs allowed).

Submitting Assignments

All of your PowerPoint presentations are to be saved on your USB drive and then copied to the USB drive provided by your instructor. It is your responsibility at the end of each chapter’s assignments to ask your instructor for her USB drive. Your student folder with the progress record is where your instructor will be recording the grades for you to see each week.

Final Project

There is a final presentation for this class that is due at the end of the five-week course. You will have a deadline at the end of week 2 to present the first portion of this presentation. Information on this project begins in week 2. This project will give you the opportunity to use your PowerPoint skills to create a presentation completely from scratch. This will build your confidence in creating your own presentations after the term is over.

At the end of this packet is a progress record that matches the record in your folder which your instructor uses to record your grades in your student folder. Use it to mark your progress through the course.

Final Grade

Your final grade will be determined by the following total points:

Total points available in the course: 200 pts

Final Grade

179 - 200 A

159 - 178 B

139 - 158 C

119 - 138 D

0 - 118 F

If you do not complete all course requirements but you have been consistently submitting the course work during the term, you may request from your instructor a grade of CIPR (Course in Progress-Reregister). Receiving a CIPR grade means that you must register (and pay) for the class again, but you may then complete the course beginning with assignments that you have not yet completed.

An Incomplete is available only when a small amount of work is not yet completed, such as one test. An Audit must be declared in writing within the first week of the term. The Pass/No Pass grading option must be requested by the eighth week of the term.

Your Time Commitment

In order to complete this course in five weeks, you will need to spend a minimum of nine (9) hours each week working on this course. The “rule of thumb” for college courses it to expect two hours of work outside of class each week for each credit of the course. Depending on your background, you may need additional time outside of class to complete

Computer Lab: The Sylvania campus provides an open lab for student use. The schedule of open lab hours will be posted by the classroom the first week of the term or you can check with the office staff.

General Information about PowerPoint Presentations

Text Slides: Text should highlight your presentation, not create a substitute for it Bullet points, not complete sentences.

4-6 points per page No large blocks of text, audience stops listening, and reads Consider showing one point at a time, using animation

Images: Avoid clip art… everyone has seen it before, lacks emphasis Images should be good: not pixilated, out of focus, too dark Cropped to remove distractions

Graphs/Diagrams:

Make them as simple as possible To be grasped in just a few moments, not studied at length

Templates: Use a consistent background and layout for all slides. The template sets the tone of your presentation Avoid really bright backgrounds, or cluttered layouts Fonts: Choose two at most, nothing cursive or ornamental Stick to sans-serif (block) fonts, for legibility Minimum of 18 point, 20 to 24 is better

Main points/titles bigger than sub points/content

Color: High contrast dark on light, or light on dark

Avoid extremely bright colors, hot pink, neon orange, acid green

Animation:

Use sparingly, and be consistent Avoid distracting or annoying sound effects
