Chairperson Rob Baumgartner was not in attendance. Kim Hunter, Director of Secondary

2. i-Ready Update

Brandon Lagerquist, Director of Assessment, Research and Evaluation, presented an update on the i-

Ready pilot. Key points:

Brandon first presented an overview of the participation rates in the process so far this year.

We will have a significant sample of teachers, students and families from most schools to

provide feedback the tool.

Next, Brandon presented a high-level analysis of what the results of fall to winter growth in both

math and ELA. The charts below show how students in each level progressed from the fall to

the winter. For example, in the math chart students that demonstrated being early on in the grade

level, 534 showed progress to mid or above grade level, 599 stayed at that level, 335 now tested

one grade below, 20 tested 2 grades below, and 18 were 3 grades below level. These data will be

further analyzed and compared with spring assessment results.

Additional data were presented including this chart showing how students are doing compared

to what i-Ready defines a “typical” growth for a normal school year—this chart shows the

percentage of students on track to make typical annual growth.

Next steps in the pilot/review process include:

o February - support use of Online Instruction and analyze potential for ROI.

o March - Feedback form for families, students, teachers, and principals.

o April/May - Spring diagnostic window.

o May/June - Final analysis and final report write-up.

o June - Final report with recommendations to Board of Directors.

3. Dyslexia Screener

Next a team including members of our Title I/LAP team (Director of Federal Programs, Kelly Moses,

TOSAs, Megan McCarthy and Tory Amos) & Student Learning (Instructional Coach, Megan Hendrickson)

presented an update on the Dyslexia Screener Process. Key points:

In 2021-2022, Washington State mandate RCW 28A.320.26 requires Edmonds School District to

designate a Dyslexia Screener.

o Dyslexia Screener:

o NOT a tool to diagnose dyslexia

o Screens for weaknesses in literacy that may be associated with dyslexia.

o Administered to all students in grades K-2

o Intended to quickly & target areas of need

o Standardized for administration & scoring

o Culturally and linguistically responsive for Washington students

The team also provided an overview of the areas that will be include a screener by reviewing

skills that may be associated with dyslexia:

o Phonological Awareness (rhyming, syllable awareness)

o Phonemic Awareness

Cat is composed of the sounds: /k/ /a/ /t/.

Cat without the /k/ is “at.”

o Letter-Sound Knowledge (Phonics)

o Rapid Automatized Naming Skills (RAN)

Quickly and accurately naming repeated sets of familiar items (objects,

letters, numbers, and colors)

OSPI has said districts must choose from this approved list of Screeners for Literacy Skills

Associated with Dyslexia

o Edmonds uses two of the OSPI recommended screeners:

o Acadience Reading

Administered in K-4 by Title/LAP teachers

o i-Ready Reading

i-Ready Math administered by K-6 classroom teachers

i-Ready Reading is currently optional, likely an expectation 2021-2022

While we do not currently have a process for adopting assessments, it is the intent of the group

to follow a process that mirrors our curriculum adoption process, to the degree possible. That

said, there will be a slight modification to that process:

o Why is the process being modified?

State Mandate with a timeline of a fall 2021 start date

OSPI recommended screeners are already being used in Edmonds

o What’s been modified?

Needs Assessment—will not be completed

Instructional Materials Review Committee—typical review of different options

at this time will be on hold

Pilot Committee—no need to pilot as we have users of both options already in

the district

Cabinet approved an adoption process to designate a Dyslexia Screener for the Edmonds School

District that will include Acadience Reading and i-Ready.

Proposed Process Timeline:

o Process began February 2021

o Data review team will be determined/notified by Feb. 12

o Team will meet in February - April

o Board report completed May 2021

o Process completed by June 2021

o Dyslexia Screener administered beginning September 2021

o Revisit Dyslexia Screener data in Spring of 2023 to determine if other screener

measures should be considered.

March 11th, 4:00-6:00pm Data analysis from acadience and i-Ready.

March 25th, 4:00-6:00pm Review Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) assessment

April 15th, 4:00-6:00pm Final Recommendation for Dyslexia Screener

April 22nd, 4:00-6:00pm TBD

Team will provide updates on the process later in the year.

Next IMC meeting is on March 9, 4:00 - 5:30 PM, via ZOOM

Agenda will include: High School Science Adoption & the AECC Curriculum/Assessment Adoption
