• On a high-definition TV (HDTV) (F.ZJ67)HDV recordings will be played back in their original high quality.• On standard definition TVs (L_ 68)HDV recordings will be down-converted to match the resolution of the TV set.

What is the Cinema Mode?

Give your recordings a cinematic look by using the [i_Z]_CINE MODE]recording program (L_ 45). Combine this recording mode with the high-definition, 24 fps progressive frame rate [_ HDV (PF24)] (_ 38) to getthe enhanced effect of the 24p Cinema Mode.

About the Joystick and the Joystick Guide

The mini joystick allows you to control many of the camcorder's operations and tomake selections and changes in the camcorder's menus.

Push the joystick up, down, left or right I f_(AT, -_ _ ) to select an item or change _ ((__ _1/ Press the joystick itself (_)) to save thesettings. L_,._ settings or confirm an action. On menu

screens, this is indicated by the SET icon

The functions assigned to the joystick change according to the operation mode and the

camcorder's settings. Press (_!7/i) to display/hide the joystick guide to remind you of thejoystick's functions.

When the guide contains multiple "pages', [NEXT] and the page numbericon (_v) will appear at the bottom position. Push the joystick (Y)

toward [NEXT] to display the next "page" of the guide.

About the Operating Modes

The camcorder's operating mode is determined by the positions of the _ switch and the

/E_ switch. In the manual, _ indicates that a function is available in the operating

mode shown and ; indicates that the function is not available. When no operating mode

icons are given, the function is available in all operating modes.

Getting Started

Charging the Battery Pack

The camcorder can be powered with abattery pack or directly using the compactpower adapter. Charge the battery packbefore use.

Connect the compact power adapterto the camcorder'e DC IN terminal.• The CHARGE indicator starts

Using Headphones

When shooting subjects with a stronglight source behind them, you can havethe camcorder automatically correct forthe backlight with the press of a singlebutton.

Capturing a Still Image from the

Playback Picture

While you are playing back a tape youcan capture the picture as a still image onthe memory card. The quality of thecaptured still image can be selected butits size cannot be changed (it will dependon the recording standard of the tapebeing played back).

Light Metering Mode

The camcorder measures the lightreflected from the subject in order tocalculate the optimal exposure settings.Depending on the subject, you may wantto change the way the light is measuredand evaluated.

Reading the Histogram Display

When viewing still images you candisplay the histogram and the icons of allthe functions used at the time of

recording. Use the histogram as areference to verify the correct exposure ofthe still image.

The area to the right of the histogramrepresents highlights and the left siderepresents shadows. A still image whosehistogram skews to the right is relativelybright; while one whose histogram peaksto the left, is relatively dark.

The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia

Interface) connection -connection type Iq_ is aconvenient all-digital connection using a singte

cable for both video and audio. When youconnect the camcorder to an HDTV equipped

with an HDMI terminal, you can enjoy video andaudio playback at the highest quality- The HDMI terminal on the camcorder is for

output only Do not connect it to an HDMt output

terminal on an external device, as this maydamage the camcorder.

- The HDMI connection will recognizeautomatically the highest resolution supported

by the connected HDTV, and output the optimalvideo signal to ensure the best viewing

experience. You can confirm the currentspecification of the video output in the [HDMI

OUT] information display at the bottom of thePLAY/OUT SETUP2 menu screen in

mode (_,1, PLAY/OUT SETUPmenu in other modes).

- Correct operation cannot be guaranteed whenconnecting the camcorder to DVI monitors.

- Some HDTVs have their HDCP digitat contentprotection configured so as not to allow the

pIayback of personal content (video recordedfor personaI uses). If you cannot play back the

video recorded with this camcorder on yourHDTV using the HDMI connection, try

connecting the camcorder using the videocomponent connection -connection type []-instead.

- There witl be no video output from the AV/Oterminal or the COMPONENT OUT terminalwhile the camcorder is connected to an external

tapes, "COPYRIGHT PROTECTED

tapes via the HDV/DV terminal,"COPYRIGHT PROTECTED DUBBING

RESTRICTED" appears and you will not be

able to record the contents of the tape.

Analog/Digital Conversion

Using the camcorder you can convertanalog video signals (for example from aVCR) to digital signals (DV standard only)and output them to a digital recordingdevice.

You can transfer recordings to a computerusing the HDV/DV terminal.

The standard of the video transferred

depends on the standard of the originalrecording and the compatibility of thevideo editing software.When transferring a video originallyrecorded in HDV standard, if the editingsoftware supports high-definition video,video output will be in HD standard. If theediting software does not supporthigh-definition video, even if the originalrecording was made in HDV standard,video output will be in SD standard.

With the supplied USB cable and theDigital Video Software, you can transferstill images to a computer simply bypressing _ (print/share).

Preparations

The first time you connect the camcorderto the computer, you need to install thesoftware and set the auto-launch setting.From the second time on, you will onlyneed to connect the camcorder to the

computer to transfer images.

1 Install the supplied Digital VideoSoftware.

2 Set the camcorder tomode.

Cleaningthe Camcorder

Camcorder Body• Use a soft, dry cloth to clean thecamcorder body. Never use chemicallytreated cloth or volatile solvents such as

paint thinner.

Lens and Viewfinder

• If the lens surface is dirty, the autofocusmay not work properly.• Remove any dust or dirt particles usinga non-aerosol type blower brush.

• Use a clean, soft lens-cleaning cloth togently wipe the lens or viewfinder. Neveruse tissue paper.

LCD Screen and I,AF sensor• Clean the LCD screen and the I.AF

sensor using a clean, soft lens-cleaningcloth.

• Condensation may form on the surfaceof the screen when the temperaturechanges suddenly. Wipe it with a soft drycloth.

Storage

• If you do not intend to use thecamcorder for a long time, store it in aplace free of dust, in low humidity, and attemperatures not higher than 30 °C(86 °F).

Condensation

Moving the camcorder rapidly betweenhot and cold temperatures may causecondensation (water droplets) to form onits internal surfaces. Stop using thecamcorder if condensation is detected.

• The camcorder automatically shuts off,the warning message "CONDENSATIONHAS BEEN DETECTED" appears forapprox. 4 seconds and [] starts flashing.• if a cassette is loaded, the warningmessage "REMOVE THE CASSETTE"appears and [] starts flashing. Removethe cassette immediately and leave thecassette compartment open. Leaving thecassette in the camcorder may damagethe tape.• A cassette cannot be loaded whencondensation is detected.

RESUMINGUSE

• The precise time required for waterdroplets to evaporate will vary dependingon the location and weather conditions.

CANON CONSUMER DIGITAL VIDEO EQUIPMENT LIMITED WARRANTY

The limited warranty set forth below is given by Canon Canada Inc ("Canon Canada") with respect to Canon digital video

equipment purchased in Canada This Hmited warranty is only effective upon presentation of a bill of sale or other proof of

purchase for this Canon digital video equipment to a Canon Service Facility when repairs are required

Canon consumer video digital equipment is warranted under normal, non-commerciaL personal use, against defective

materials or workmanship as follows:

Parts: Defective parts will be exchanged for new parts or at Canon Canada's option, comparable rebuilt parts for a pedod of

one year from the date of original purchase, except Video Heads which will be exchanged for a pedod of 3 months from the

date of purchase.

Labour: For a period of one year from the date of original purchase, labour will be provided free of charge by our CanonService FaciJifies fn Canada.

This limited warranty covers all defects except where:

(a} The loss or damage to the product results from:

i) accident, natural disaster mishandling, abuse, neglect, unauthorized product modification or failure to follow

instructions contained in the instruction manual:

if) the use of accessories, attachmenta, products, supplies, parts or devices vdth this Canon product that do not conform

to Canon specifications or that cause abnormally frequent service problems

iii) repairs or services performed by any party other than a Canon Service Facility;

iv) defective batteries or any exposure to water sand or dirt:

v) shipping (claim must be presented to the shipper);

(b) Any serial number on the video equipment is altered or removed.

(c) The digital video equipment is used for commercial, professional or industda] purposes

This limited warranty does not cover the cabinet (exterior finish) of the digital video equipment, video cassette tapes bead

cteanings, nor does it apply to digital video equipment purchased outside Canada

TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE

Ship your Canon digital video equipment in its original carton, box or equivalent, properly packed, fully insured with shipping

charges prepaid, together with a copy of your bill of sale or other proof of purchase and a description of the problem to any ofthe Canon Service Facilities in Canada

LIMITATIONS

Except as otherwise required by applicab{e legislation this warranty is Jn lieu of all other warranties, conditions, guarantees or

representations, express or implied, statutory or other,vise, relative to this Canon product, including implied warranties or

conditions of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

Canon Canada assumes no liability for special, consequential or incidental damages or loss that may arise, whether on

account of negligence or otherwise, from the use, misuse or inability to use this Canon product (including toss of profit,

revenue, video tapes or enjoyment) or from failure to conform to any express or implied warranties conditions, guarantees or

representations. Any recovery under this limited warranty shall not exceed the purchase price of the product. Canon Canada

does not assume or authorize any other person to assume for Canon Canada any other Hability with respect to this Canon

product

This warranty does not extend to any person other than the odginal purchaser of this Canon product or the person for whom it

was purchased as a gift and states your exclusive remedy
