• Keep all parts of your body awayfrom the chain when the engine isrunning.

• Keep children, bystanders, and ani-mals at least 30 feet (10 meters)away from the work area when start-ing and using the saw.

• Do not handle or operate a chainsaw when you are fatigued, i11,or up-set, or if you have taken alcohol, drugs, or medication. You must be ingood physical condition and mentallyalert. If you have any condition thatmight be aggravated by strenuous

work, check with doctor before oper-ating.

• Do not start cutting until you have aclear work area, secure footing, andespecially if you are felling a tree, aretreat path.

OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY• Do not operate with one hand. Seri-

ous injury to the operator, helpers, orbystanders may result from one-handed operation. A chain saw is in-tended for two-handed use.

• Operate the chain saw only in a well-ventilated outdoor area.

• Do not operate saw from a ladder orin a tree.

• Make sure the chain will not makecontact with any object while startingthe engine. Never try to start the sawwhen the guide bar is in a cut.

• Do not put pressure on the saw, es-pecially at the end of the cut. Doingso can cause you to lose controlwhen the cut is completed.

• Stop engine before setting saw down.• Hand carry saw only when engine is

stopped. Carry with muffler awayfrom body; guide bar & chain project-ing behind you; guide bar preferablycovered with a scabbard.

GUARD AGAINST KICKBACKFollow all safety rules to help avoidkickback and other forces which canresult in serious injury.

Kickback Path

_, _. _ Avoid _,_uctions

Clear The Working Area

41_WARNING: Avoid kickback which

can result in serious injury. Kickbackis the backward, upward or sudden for-ward motion of the guide bar occurringwhen the saw chain near the upper tipof the guide bar contacts any objectsuch as a log or branch, or when thewood closes in and pinches the sawchain in the cut. Contacting a foreignobject in the wood can also result inloss of chain saw control.• Rotational Kickback can occur

when the moving chain contacts anobject at the upper tip of the guidebar. This contact can cause thechain to dig into the object, whichstops the chain for an instant. Theresult is a lightning fast, reversereaction which kicks the guide bar upand back toward the operator.

• Pinch-Kickback can occur when thethe wood closes in and pinches themoving saw chain in the cut alongthe top of the guide bar and the sawchain is suddenly stopped. This sud-den stopping of the chain results in areversal of the chain force used tocut wood and causes the saw tomove in the opposite direction of thechain rotation. The saw is drivenstraight back toward the operator.

• Pull-In can occur when the movingchain contacts a foreign object in thewood in the cut along the bottom ofthe guide bar and the saw chain issuddenly stopped. This sudden stop-ping pulls the saw forward and awayfrom the operator and could easilycause the operator to lose control ofthe saw.

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACK• Recognize that kickback can happen.

With a basic understanding of kick-back, you can reduce the element ofsurprise which contributes to acci-dents.

• Never let the moving chain contactany object at the tip of the guide bar.

Avoid Pinch-Kickback:• Be extremely aware of situations or

obstructions that can cause materialto pinch the top of or otherwise stopthe chain.

• Do not cut more than one log at atime.

• Do not twist saw as bar is withdrawnfrom an undercut when bucking.

Avoid Pull-In:• Always begin cutting with the engine

at full speed and the saw housingagainst wood.

• Use wedges made of plastic orwood. Never use metal to hold thecut open,

MAINTAIN CONTROL

Stand to the left of the saw

Never reverse hand positions

• A good, firm grip on the saw withboth hands will help you maintain

control, Don't let go, Grip the rearhandle with your right hand whetheryou are right or left handed, Wrap thefingers of your left hand over andaround the front handlebar, and yourleft thumb under the front handlebar,Keep your left arm straight with theelbow locked.

• Position your left hand on the fronthandlebar so it is in a straight linewith your right hand on the rear han-dle when making bucking cuts.Stand slightly to the left side of thesaw to keep your body from being ina direct line with the cutting chain.

• Stand with your weight evenly bal-anced on both feet.

• Do not overreach. You could bedrawn or thrown off balance and losecontrol.

• Do not cut above shoulder height. Itis difficult to maintain control of sawabove shoulder height.

KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES

_WARNING: The following fea-tures are included on your saw to helpreduce hazard of kickback; however, such features will not totally eliminatethis danger. Do not rely only on safetydevices. Follow all safety rules to helpavoid kickback and other forces whichcan result in serious injury.• Front Hand Guard: designed to re-

duce the chance of your left handcontacting the chain if your handslips off the front handlebar.

• Position of front and rear handlebars:designed with distance between han-dles and "in-line" with each other. Thespread and "in-line" position of thehands provided by this design worktogether to give balance and resis-tance in controlling the pivot of thesaw back toward the operator if kick-back occurs,

• Reduced-Kickback Guide Bar: de-signed with a small radius tip whichreduces the size of the kickbackdanger zone, This type bar has beendemonstrated to significantly reducethe number and seriousness of kick-backs.

CHAIN BRAKE & CKA ANGLE• Chain Brake: designed to stop the

chain in the event of kickback,

_WARNING: WE DO NOT REP*RESENT AND YOU SHOULD NOT AS_SUME THAT THE CHAIN BRAKE WILLPROTECT YOU IN THE EVENT OF A KICK*BACK. Kickback is a lightning fast actionwhich throws the bar and rotating chainbackand uptoward the operator. Kick-back can be caused by allowing contactof the bar tip in the danger zone with anyhard object. Kickback can also becaused by pinching the saw chain alongthe top of the guide bar, This action maypush the guide bar rapidly back towardtheoperator, Either of these events maycause you to lose control of the sawwhich could result in serious injury oreven death, DO NOT RELY UPON ANYOFTHE DEVICES BUILT INTO YOUR SAW.YOU SHOULD USE THE SAW PROPERLYAND CAREFULLY TO AVOID KICKBACK.Reduced-kickback guide bars and low-kickback saw chains reduce the chanceand magnitude of kickback and are rec-ommended, Your saw has a low kick-back chain and bar as original equip-ment. Repairs on a chain brake shouldbe made by an authodzed Sears Service

• Pinching the saw chain along the topof the guide bar may push the guidebar rapidly back toward the operator.

• Either of these reactions may causeyou to lose control of the saw whichcould result in serious injury. Do notrely exclusively upon safety devicesbuilt into your saw.

_WARNING: Computed kickbackangle (CKA) listed on your saw andlisted in the CKA table below representsangle of kickback your bar and chaincombinations will have when tested inaccordance with CSA (Canadian Stan-dards Association) standards. Whenpurchasing replacement bar and chain, considerations should be given to thelower CKA values. Lower CKA valuesrepresent safer angles to the user, high-er values indicate more angle and high-er kick energies. Computed angle repre-sented indicates total energy and angleassociated without activation of thechain brake dudng kickback. In all caseslower CKA values represent a safer op-erating environment for the user. The following guide bar and chain com-binations meet kickback requirementsof CSA 2162.1 & Z62.3 when used onsaws listed in this manual. BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

_WARNING: Be sure to read the

fuel handling information in the safetyrules section of this manual before youbegin. If you do not understand thefuel handling information do not at-tempt to fuel your unit. Seek help fromsomeone that does understand the in-formation or contact your Sears Ser-vice Centre.

GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OILThe chain oiler provides continuouslubrication to the chain and guide bar.Be sure to fill the bar oil tank when youfill the fuel tank (Capacity = 6.8 fl. oz.),For maximum guide bar and chain life,we recommend you use Craftsmanchain saw bar oil, If Craftsman bar oilis not available, you may use a goodgrade SAE 30 oil until you are able toobtain Craftsman brand. The oil outputis automatically metered during opera-tion. Your saw will use approximatelyone tank of bar oil for every tank of fuelmix. Always fill the bar oil tank whenyou fill the fuel tank.FUELING ENGINE

_WARNING: Remove fuel capslowly when refueling,This engine is certified to operate on un-leaded gasoline, Before operation, gaso-line must be mixed with a good qualitysynthetic 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil.We recommend CraBsman brand syn-thetic oil. Mix gasoline and oil at a ratioof 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is obtained by mix-ing 3,2 ounces (95 ml) ofoil with 1 gal-lon (4 litres) of unleaded gasoline. In-cluded with this saw is a 3,2 ounce (95ml) container of Craftsman brand oil.Pour the entire contents of this containerinto 1 gallon (4 litres) of gasoline toachieve the proper fuel mixture. DO NOTUSE automotive oil or boat oil, These oilswill cause engine damage, When mixingfuel follow the instructions printed on thecontainer. Once oil is added to the gaso-line, shake container momentarily to as-sure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed.Always read and follow the safety rulesrelating to fuel before fueling your unit,IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract mois-ture which leads to separation andformation of acids durthg storage. Acidic

gas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage,To avoid engine problems, the fuelsystem should be emptied before stor-age for 30 days or longer, Drain thegas tank, start the engine and let it rununtil the fuel lines and carburetor areempty. Use fresh fuel next season.See STORAGE instructions for addition-al information.Never use engine or carburetor clean-er products in the fuel tank or perma-nent damage may occur.See the STORAGE section for addition-al information.CHAIN BRAKEEnsure chain brake is disengaged bypulling the front hand guard back to-ward the front handle as far as pos-sible. The chain brake must be disen-gaged before cutting with the saw.

_WARNING: The chain must not

move when the engine runs at idlespeed, If the chain moves at idlespeed refer to CARBURETOR ADJUST*MENT within this manual, Avoid con-tact with the muffler. A hot muffler cancause serious burns.

STOPPING YOUR ENGINE• Move ON/STOP switch to the STOP

CHAIN BRAKE

£A _I_WARNING: If the brake band is

worn too thin it may break when the chainbrake is triggered. With a broken brakeband, the chain brake will not stop thechain. The chain brake must be replacedif any part is worn to less than 0.020 inch(0.5 mm) thick. Repairs on a chain brakeshould be made by your Sears ServiceCentre. Take your unit to the place of pur-chase or to the nearest Sears ServiceCentre.

• This saw is equipped with a chainbrake. The brake is designed to stopthe chain if kickback occurs.

• The inertia-activated chain brake is ac-_vated if the front hand guard is pushedforward, either manually (by hand) orautoma%ally (by sudden movement).

• If the brake is already activated, it isdisengaged by pulling the front handguard back toward the front handle asfar as possible.

• When cutting with the saw, the chainbrake must be disengaged.

Disengaged

Braking function controlCAUTION: The chain brake must bechecked several times daily. The enginemust be running when performing thisprocedure. This is the only instancewhen the saw should be placed on theground with the engine running.

Place the saw on firm ground. Grip theroar handle with your right hand and thefront handle with your left hand. Apply fullthrottle by fully depressing the throttle trig-ger. Activate the chain brake by turningyour left wrist against the hand guardwithout releasing your grip around thefront handle. The chain should stop im-mediately.Inertia activating function control

_WARNING: When performing thefollowing procedure, the engine mustbe turned off.

Grip the rear handle with your right handand the front handle with your left hand.Hold the chain saw approximately 14inches (35 cm) above a stump or otherwooden surface. Release your grip onthe front handle and use the weight ofthe saw to let the tip of the guide barfall forward and contact the stump. When the tip of the bar hits the stump, the brake should activate.OPERATING TIPS• Check chain tension before first use

and after 1 minute of operation. SeeCHAIN TENSION in the MAINTENANCEsection.

• Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, plastics, masonry, non-wood buildingmaterials, etc.

• Stop the saw if the chain strikes aforeign object. Inspect the saw andrepair parts as necessary.

• Keep the chain out of dirt and sand.Even a small amount of dirt willquickly dull a chain and increase thepossibility of kickback.

• Practice cutting a few small logs us-ing the following steps. This will helpyou get the "feel" of using your sawbefore you begin a major sawing op-eration.

• Squeeze the throttle trigger and al-low the engine to reach full speedbefore cutting.

• Begin cutting with the saw frameagainst the log.

• Keep the engine at full speed theentire time you are cutting.

• Allow the chain to cut for you. Exertonly light downward pressure.

• Release the throttle trigger as soonas the cut is completed, allowingthe engine to idle. If you run thesaw at full throttle without a cuttingload, unnecessary wear can occur.

• To avoid losing control when cut iscomplete, do not put pressure onsaw at end of cut.

• Stop engine before setting saw down.TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES

_WARNING: Check for broken ordead branches which can fall whilecutting causing serious injury. Do notcut near buildings or electrical wires ifyou do not know the direction of treefall, nor cut at night since you will notbe able to see well, nor during badweather such as rain, snow, or strongwinds, etc.• Carefully plan your sawing operation

in advance.• Clear the work area. You need a

clear area all around the tree so youcan have secure footing.

• The chain saw operator should keepon the uphill side of the terrain as thetree is likely to roll or slide downhillafter it is felled.

• Study the natural conditions that cancause the tree to fall in a particulardirection. These conditions include:• The wind direction and speed.• The lean of the tree. The lean of a

tree might not be apparent due touneven or sloping terrain. Use aplumb or level to determine the di-rection of tree lean.

• Weight and branches on one side.• Surrounding trees and obstacles.

• Look for decay and rot. If the trunk isrotted, it can snap and fall toward theoperator.

• Make sure there is enough room forthe tree to fall. Maintain a distance of

24/2 tree lengths from the nearestperson or other objects. Enginenoise can drown out a warning call.

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches in diameter or larger)

The notch method is used to fell largetrees. A notch is cut on the side of thetree in the desired direction of fall. Aftera felling cut is made on the oppositeside of tree, the tree will tend to fall inthe direction of the notch.

NOTE: If tree has large buttress roots, remove them before making the notch. If using saw to remove buttress roots, keep saw chain from contactingground to prevent dulling of the chain.

NOTCH CUT AND FELLING TREE• Make notch cut by cutting the top of

the notch first. Cut through 1/3 of thediameter of the tree. Next completethe notch by cutting the bottom. Seeillustration. Once the notch is cut, re-move the wedge of wood from tree.

Fellingcut here

First cut ='i

• After removing the wood, make thefelling cut on the opposite side of thenotch. This is done by making a cutabout two inches higher than thecenter of the notch. This will leaveenough uncut wood between the fell-ing cut and the notch to form a hinge. This hinge will help prevent the treefrom falling in the wrong direction.

Hinge holds tree onstump and helps

Opening offelling cut

Closingof notch

NOTE: Before felling cut is complete, use wedges to open the cut whennecessary to control the direction offall. To avoid kickback and chaindamage, use wood or plastic wedges, but never steel or iron wedges.

• Be alert to signs that the tree isready to fall: cracking sounds, widen-ing of the felling cut, or movement inthe upper branches.

• As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put itdown, and get away quickly on yourplanned retreat path.

• DO NOT use your saw to cut down apartially fallen tree. Be extremelycautious with partially fallen treesthat may be poorly supported. Whena tree doesn't fall completely, set thesaw aside and pull down the treewith a cable winch, block and tackle,or tractor.

CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)Bucking is the term used for cutting afallen tree to the desired log size.

_,WARNING: Do not stand on the

log being cut. Any portion can rollcausing loss of footing and control. Donot stand downhill of the log being cut.

IMPORTANT POINTS• Cut only one log at a time.• Cut shattered wood very carefully;

sharp pieces of wood could be flungtoward operator.

• Use a sawhorse to cut small logs.Never allow another person to holdthe log while cutting and never holdthe log with your leg or foot.

• Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs, and roots are tangled. Drag logsinto a clear area before cutting them.

BUCKING TECHNIQUES

_WARNING: If saw becomes

pinched or hung in a log, don't try toforce it out. You can lose control of thesaw resulting in injury and/or damageto the saw. Stop the saw, drive awedge of plastic or wood into the cutuntil the saw can be removed easily.Restart saw and carefully reenter thecut. Do not use a metal wedge. Do notattempt to restart your saw when it ispinched or hung in a log.

Use a wedge to remove pinched saw

Turn saw OFF and use a plasticorwooden wedge to force cut open.

Overcutting begins on the top side ofthe log with the bottom of the sawagainst the log. When overcutting uselight downward pressure.

Overcutting Undercutting

Undercutting involves cutting on theunderside of the log with top of sawagainst the log. When undercuttinguse light upward pressure. Hold sawfirmly and maintain control. The sawwill tend to push back toward you.

_WARNING: Never turn saw up-side down to undercut. The saw can-

not be controlled in this position.

Always make your first cut on thecompression side of the log. The com-pression side of the log is where thepressure of the log's weight is concen-trated.

of the log.• Roll the log over and finish with a

second overcut.• Watch for logs with a compresion

side. See illustrations for cutting logswith a compression side.

BUCKING USING A LOG ORSUPPORT STAND• Remember your first cut is always on

the compression side of the log. (Re-fer to the illustrations below for yourfirst and second cut).

• Your first cut should extend 1/3 of thediameter of the log.

LIMBING AND PRUNING

_,WARNING: Be alert for and

guard against kickback. Do not allowthe moving chain to contact any otherbranches or objects at the nose of theguide bar when limbing or pruning. AI-bwing such contact can result in seri-ous injury.

_WARNING: Never climb into a

tree to limb or prune. Do not stand onladders, platforms, a log, or in any po-sition which can cause you to loseyour balance or control of the saw.IMPORTANT POINTS• Watch out for springpoles.

Springpoles are small size limbswhich can whip toward you, or pullyou off balance. Use extreme cau-tion when cutting small size limbs.

• Be alert for springback. Watch out forbranches that are bent or underpressure. Avoid being struck by thebranch or the saw when the tensionin the wood fibers is released.

• Frequently clear branches out of theway to avoid tripping over them.

LIMBING• Limb a tree only after it is cut down.• Leave the larger limbs underneath

the felled tree to support the tree asyou work.

• Start at the base of the felled treeand work toward the top, cuttingbranches and Jimbs. Remove smalllimbs with one cut.

• Keep the tree between you and thechain.

• Remove larger, supporting brancheswith the cutting techniques describedin BUCKING WITHOUT A SUPPORT.

• Always use an overcut to cut smalland freely banging limbs. Undercut-ting could cause limbs to fall andpinch the saw,

PRUNING

_WARNING: Limit pruning to limbsshoulder height or below, Do not cut ifbranches are higher than your shoul-der. Get a professional to do the job,• Make your first cut 1/3 of the way

through the bottom of the limb, Thiscut will make the limb sag so that itfalls easily on the second cut.

• Next make a second cut an overeutall the way through the limb,

• Finish the pruning operation by usingan overcut so that the stump of thelimb protrudes 1 to 2 inches from thetrunk of the tree.
