No. 47/2008 of 08.09.2008
INSTRUCTION FOR WRITING A THESIS of the UNIVERSITY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT
in RZESZOW
I.
1. The thesis is written by the student during the last two or three semesters of studies, under the
guidance of an academic teacher with an academic degree/title, later referred to as the supervisor, who
must be accepted by the dean. In the case of Master’s seminar, a supervisor may be an academic
teacher with a doctoral degree if accepted by the faculty council.
2. The student writes the thesis in the language in which his/her studies are conducted.
3. With the dean’s consent, the student may write the thesis in a foreign language.
4. Theses are written individually by the students.
5. In exceptional cases, with the dean’s consent, students of second-cycle or one-cycle Master’s degree
studies may write a thesis in teams of two.
6. A supervisor may have no more than two seminar groups. In justified cases, with the consent of the
Vice-President for Teaching, the supervisor may have three seminar groups, if s/he is employed at the
UITM under a contract of labor.
7. A supervisor may, with the dean’s consent, ask another teacher or a person from outside of the
University to conduct a part of the seminar. The invited person is remunerated according to the
supervisor’s rate. The remuneration is paid only to a person actively conducting the seminar, according
to the binding UITM regulations of remuneration for research-didactic employees.
II.
1. The thesis for first-cycle studies should prove that the student has mastered knowledge and skills
specified by the program and has the ability to analyze a given example unaided. The basic
requirement is to demonstrate the student’s practical abilities in defining a problem, then describing
and analyzing it, and solving it with the means of the right instruments, using knowledge from a given
area.
2. The thesis for first-cycle studies, depending on the field of study, should be written in accordance
with the rules specified in attachments A3, A6 to this Instruction for writing a thesis.
III.
1. The thesis for second cycle or one-cycle Master’s degree studies should prove that the student has
mastered specialist knowledge specified by the program, with special consideration for the chosen
specialty, and prove their ability to independently select literature, conduct research and analyze a
given example and to formulate opinions and conclusions.
2. The thesis for second cycle or one-cycle Master’s degree studies, depending on the field of study,
should be written in accordance with the rules specified in attachments B2, B4 to this Instruction for
writing a thesis.
3. In the case of theses for second cycle or one-cycle Master’s degree studies the supervisor may accept
theses which are only theoretical, without empirical research. In such a case, the thesis should include a
thorough theoretical analysis of the problem, using extensive literature including foreign language titles.
It should also contain the student’s own conclusions, enriching the arguments taken from the analyzed
literature.

2. In the case of instituting disciplinary proceedings against a student suspected of plagiarism of the
thesis, that student may not defend the thesis until valid completion of the proceedings.
VII.
1. Theses prepared by students are checked with the UITM Anti-Plagiarism System. For each thesis, a
so-called similarity ratio is established, informing what percentage of the analyzed thesis is repeated
in other theses to be found in the UITM base and in materials published in the Internet.
2. Similarity is understood as every cluster of at least 20 words which can be found in another thesis or
materials published in the Internet.
3. The supervisor is responsible for checking a thesis with the UITM Anti-Plagiarism System before it is
formally approved for the defense.
4. The instruction for operating the UITM Anti-Plagiarism System is available in electronic version on
the network drive under:
O:\Dziekanat\Antyplagiat_instrukcja dla promotorów.doc
5. Dean’s office employees accepting the theses in electronic version are obliged to:
a) enter the accepted theses to the UITM Anti-Plagiarism System on a current basis,
b) send daily lists of theses in the case of which the „similarity ratio” is 20% or more, to the Vice-
Deans responsible for the particular fields of study,
c) include in the personal files of a student taking the defense the „similarity report”, a specimen of
which constitutes attachment D to this Instruction for writing a thesis.
6. Vice-Deans responsible for the particular fields of study are obliged:
a) not to accept for the defense theses not checked by the UITM Anti-Plagiarism System,
b) to withhold the defense of a student whose thesis has a similarity ratio of 20% and more, until the
causes for such high similarity ratio are explained.
7. Supervisors are obliged to carefully analyze again the content of a thesis whose “similarity ratio” is
20% and more.
VIII.
1. The thesis is marked by the supervisor and by one advisor appointed by the dean. The mark for the
thesis is the arithmetic mean of both above-mentioned marks. The advisor can be an academic teacher
with an academic degree/title. An academic teacher from beyond the University can be the advisor.
2. If the thesis is marked “unsatisfactory” (“niedostateczny”) by the advisor, the dean sends the thesis
back for correction or asks for its assessment by an additional advisor.
3. Assessing the thesis should be done in depth and not be limited solely to a description of the thesis,
but contain also critical remarks, assessment of preparation as to content and formal requirements, and
the value of the thesis. The pattern of the review is to be found in attachment F to this Instruction for
writing a thesis.
IX.
1. The defense is in the form of an oral exam unless the UITM President decides otherwise.
2. The defense takes place in front of a committee composed of:
a) the dean, vice-dean or an academic teacher appointed by the dean – as head of the committee;
b) the supervisor of the thesis;
c) the advisor of the thesis,
subject to item 3.
3. In particularly justified cases, the dean may grant consent for the supervisor or advisor of the thesis to
be absent from the defense. In such cases, the dean appoints another academic teacher with an
academic degree/title to complete the committee’s composition. The appointed teacher should
represent the scientific discipline covering the issues of the particular thesis.
4. The course of the defense is minuted.
5. With the dean’s consent, the student may defend the thesis in a foreign language.
5
6. The defense comprises of the following:
a) the student presenting the thesis for no longer than 15 minutes; the presentation may be prepared
and shown using one of the computer applications designed for such aims, e.g. Power Point, or
using a text projector,
b) the advisor presenting a short opinion on the thesis,
c) the student answering:
two questions selected at random from of the basic courses and those related to the field of
study, covered by the study plan of the given field (lists of questions for the particular fields
of study are given in attachments G3, G5 to this Instruction for Writing a Thesis)
one question from the material covered by the thesis.
7. The mark from the defense is an arithmetic mean of the marks obtained by the student for answering
questions referred to in item 6 c), rounded to a full or half-mark, i.e.:
a) if the arithmetic mean is between 3.0 and 3.49, the mark is written as 3.0,
b) if the arithmetic mean is between 3.50 and 3.74, the mark is written as 3.5,
c) if the arithmetic mean is between 3.75 and 4.24, the mark is written as 4.0,
d) if the arithmetic mean is between 4.25 and 4.50, the mark is written as 4.5,
e) if the arithmetic mean is between 4.51 and 5.00, the mark is written as 5.0.
X.
1. If the student receives an “unsatisfactory” (“niedostateczny”) mark at his/her defense or does not
defend his/her thesis, the dean determines a second date for the defense. The repeated defense cannot
take place earlier than one month later.
2. If the student receives again an “unsatisfactory” (“niedostateczny”) mark at his/her defense or does
not defend his/her thesis at the second date, the dean decides to have the student expelled.
3. Within one year from the date of the first defense, a student expelled as described in item 2. may
submit an application to resume studies and to have another date set for the defense.
4. Repeated defense is paid additionally, according to the Payment Policy for studies and other forms of
education at the University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów.
XI.
1. The student graduates after passing the defense with a mark of at least “satisfactory” (“dostateczny”).
The graduate receives a diploma.
2. The basis for the final mark is as follows:
a) grade point average from the studies counting as 60% of the final mark,
b) the mark from the thesis counting as 20% of the final mark,
c) the mark from the defense counting as 20% of the final mark.
3. The final mark is written in the diploma according to the rules below, subject to item 4.:
a) if the final mark from the studies is between 3.0 and 3.74, the mark is written as 3.0;
b) if the final mark from the studies is between 3.75 and 4.39, the mark is written as 4.0;
c) if the final mark from the studies is between 4.4 and 5.0, the mark is written as 5.0.
4. If the grade point average from the studies is lower than 3.0, the final mark written in the diploma
cannot be higher than 3.0.
XII.
1. One copy of the thesis with the supervisor’s signature of accepting the thesis is stored in paper
version in the student’s files, according to the Ordinance of the Minister of Science and Higher
Education of 2nd
November 2006 on documentation of the course of studying.
2. Theses in paper versions are stored in accordance with the Chancellor’s Regulation No. 128/2001
of 28.09.2001 on Document Circulation Regulations, Archival Regulations and Subject File Index
defining the scope of activity for the registry and principles and procedures concerning handling
UITM documentation.

The thesis should be of an applicable nature and help solving particular problems connected with
enterprise, the market or education within broadly understood economics:
- It is recommended to write the empirical part of the thesis in the form of a project of e.g. management
system, organization structure, database useful in a company’s activity, documents circulation
system, information system to support management process, implementation of accounting-
supporting system (Activity Base Costing, quality cost evaluation system, Target Costing, separation
of costs considering support for the decision-making process, corporate chart of accounts, financial
transfers considering risk in economic activity), venture business plan, marketing plan, company’s
strategic development based on strategic analysis, company’s development based on financial
analysis, budget of the commune. It may also be an e-learning educational module, or an expanded
didactic case.
- The thesis should reflect the abilities to use the obtained knowledge and tools in practice, especially
methods of financial, statistical, econometric, strategic, marketing analyses and appropriate computer
software (text editors, spreadsheets).
- The thesis should be about 50 pages long.
Recommended structure of the thesis:
1. Introduction
General analysis of several (3-5) pages introducing the presented issues, giving a rough outline of the
subject matter of the thesis and its applicability in practice. The chapter should end by introducing the
aim of the thesis, its scope and research hypotheses, which will be verified in subsequent chapters. It
is also recommended to briefly outline the structure (content) of particular chapters.
2. The main body
The structure of this part of the thesis should be adjusted to the specific character and subject of the
issue being the content proper of the thesis. The theoretical part of the thesis (project) should describe
the known methods of solving the research problem and contain the description of literature analysis
in a scope necessary to present this part of the thesis. The structure of this chapter should serve as a
perspective for later analyses. The structure of the empirical part may contain:
3.1 Project (assumption) description.
3.2 Presentation of the methodology of the conducted research with exact acknowledgement of the
sources for acquiring primary and secondary data and of the methods used to gather data (e.g.
survey polls, survey interview, etc.) and analytical methods. Description of tools used to process
data, inclusive of computer applications.
3.3 Presentation of results of the conducted analysis and, based on the latter, a formulation of the
desired actions to solve the assumed problem (conclusions).
Note!! – it is recommended to divide this part into chapters.
3. Conclusion
The author assesses the degree in which the aim of the thesis has been achieved and also indicates the
reasons for not achieving it in full. The author should also express here his/her conclusions concerning
in particular the possibility of further improvement of the project (e.g. optimization) and indicate
possible directions of changes.

NOTE: The particular positions of quoted literature should be placed in the bibliography at the end of
the thesis, in alphabetical order according to the authors' surnames.
15
Method 2:
References are placed after the quoted text only as numbers in square brackets referring to the number
of the item in the bibliography at the end of the thesis, e.g.
Comparing the commitment of enterprises active in Poland with enterprises operating in the EU, one
can make the conclusion that entrepreneurs in Poland show relatively low commitment in training
employees [12].
Numbers are given to the references in the order in which the particular titles appear in the thesis, and
this is the order in which particular literature items should be listed in the bibliography at the end of the
thesis. If a given title is quoted more than once, it should be referred to with the same number, given at
the first instance of quoting it, each time it is quoted in the thesis.
If the author uses material from several titles for one paragraph, the numbers of all quoted titles should
be written in square brackets, e.g.:
Comparing the commitment of enterprises active in Poland with enterprises operating in the EU, one
can make the conclusion that entrepreneurs in Poland show relatively low commitment in training
employees [3, 7, 12-19].
The endnotes to the material in the bibliography at the end of the thesis should begin with the surname
and the initial of the first (first and middle) name of the author; they are followed by the title of the
work, name of the publishing house, place and year of publishing, page numbers (if possible) where one
can find the text which is used.
The endnotes should end with full stops.

Instruction for writing a thesis
I. ELECTRONIC VERSION OF THE THESIS
The electronic version of the thesis should be prepared as follows:
Thesis file with appropriate name: 2008_UEZ_12345_p
year of defense symbol of the group student's record book number thesis (in Polish “praca”)
The file with the thesis should be saved in Microsoft Word format. The thesis may not be protected with a
password (this applies also to write-protection).
The file with the thesis should contain all required elements, such as: title page, introduction, the main
body of the thesis, conclusion, bibliography, list of charts and figures, summary and potential
attachments.
If there is one or more attachments to the thesis as a separate file(s), it should be named
2008_UEZ_12345_z (where “z” means “attachment” – “załącznik” in Polish). If there is more
than one file attached to the thesis, they should be compressed with an archive program to the ZIP
format to one file named 2008_UEZ_12345_z, and the attachments themselves may have any
names. File names should not exceed 12 characters.
II. SUBMITTING THE ELECTRONIC VERSION OF THE THESIS
The electronic version of the thesis is submitted by sending it by means of the Virtual University. After
logging in to the Virtual University (URL: http://wu.wsiz.rzeszow.pl) you should choose “Student” in the
menu on the left side of the screen. You will have several options to choose from. To submit the thesis,
choose “Thesis”.
19
In that window you will see information concerning the thesis, such as the supervisor’s data and the status
of the thesis. In the example below, the status is “None”, because the thesis has not been submitted yet.
After the thesis is sent, the status changes to “Sent”, and after the thesis is read by an employee from the
Dean’s office, the status changes to “Accepted” or “Requires changes” – if the thesis does not comply
with the “Instruction for writing a thesis” or if the resemblance rate shown by the UITM Anti-plagiarism
System exceeds the established level.
Note: If after submitting the thesis any changes are introduced for important reasons in its text, the
student should report to the Dean’s office employee and determine a way of replacing the thesis with the
corrected version.
To send the thesis, first you have to enter a description of it, which you can do by clicking “Enter
description”.
A window opens in which you have to enter the following data: thesis title, abstract (summary) and
keywords.
20
The data needs to be entered both in Polish and in English. To enter the data, click “Change” and write
the necessary information.
The entry is accepted by clicking “Save”. After entering and saving all data, click “Back”.
21
Note: Students who do not enter all required information (thesis title, abstract and keywords) cannot pass
on to the next stage of submitting their thesis.
After clicking “Back” you return to the window showing information concerning the thesis. In the
example below, there is the Polish title of the thesis, entered before.
To pass on to the next stage of submitting the thesis, please click the button “Send thesis file(s)”.
22
A window appears in which you should choose the type of file you want to send (Thesis file or
Attachment to thesis) and then click “Send file”.
Then, information about browser security appears. Click “Tak” if the message appears in Polish or “Yes”
if it appears in English. The language version of the message depends on the language version of the
Windows operating system in the computer you are sending the thesis from.
Then, the following message appears. To continue, click “Yes”.
23
A window appears in which you should click the active button “Wybierz plik do przesłania”. That
window and several following ones are in Polish, which is necessary for technical reasons.
After clicking “Wybierz plik do przesłania” you should find on the disc your previously prepared file
with the thesis which you want to submit. After choosing the right file, you should accept it by clicking
“Otwórz”.
24
Once chosen, the right thesis file is sent by clicking “Yes”. If by mistake a wrong file has been chosen,
click “No” and choose the file once again.
If the file has been sent successfully, the system reacts by sending the following message in Polish:
Click “OK” – the page will reload. When it does, the final message appears informing you if the file has
been sent successfully.
25
After clicking “Next”, a window appears, showing the sent file. If the thesis has an attachment, it has to
be sent as well. You should then choose Attachment to thesis as your file type and repeat the procedure
for sending the file.
On finishing the process of sending the thesis, click “Back” to come back to the window “Student –
Thesis”.
To check whether the thesis sent in its electronic form has been accepted, choose the option “Student -
Thesis” at the Virtual University.
NOTE: the confirmation that the electronic version of the thesis has been accepted can appear at
the earliest on the following day after the thesis is sent.
If the thesis has been accepted you will see a date and the message “Thesis has been accepted” in the field
“Date of submitting the thesis”, and the message “Accepted” will appear in the “Status” field. This is
shown below on an example.
26
If the thesis is found not to be in compliance with the “Instruction for writing a thesis” or if the
established resemblance rate in the UITM Anti-plagiarism System is exceeded, the date of submitting the
thesis will not be shown in the window “Student – Thesis”, and the message “Requires changes” will
appear in the “Status” field.
In such cases, the student has to contact the Dean’s office to obtain information about what needs to be
corrected in the thesis. After corrections, the thesis must be sent again according to the above described
thesis sending procedure
