Experimental high resolution forecasts for NWS• Early 1997: Collaborated with NCEP and NWS to implement the Regional

Spectral model (RSM) with a 10-km horizontal resolution into the operational suite for the state of Hawaii.

• 2001: Running experimental high resolution numerical guidance for Oahu using RSM coupled with a land surface model (LSM) with a 1.5-km horizontal resolution daily. The model results are validated with NWS surface stations and rainguages.

• 2003: Running MM5/LSM model for the state of Hawaii with a 9-km resolution, Hawaii and Maui-Molokai domains with a 3-km resolution, Oahu and Kauai domains with a 1.5-km resolution with daily 48-hour forecasts using a DELL PC cluster. The MM5 model runs were validated using 50 special surface stations and aircraft flight level data collected during a 42-day period of the Hawaiian Rain Band Project and NWS surface weather stations and rainguages.

• May 2004: Experimental high resolution experimental model forecasts for the Fiji Meteorological service.

• 2005: The high resolution model output is used by Prof. Fai Cheung to drive wave models.

• June 2007: Testing high-resolution WRF-NMM and WRF-ARW runs daily for the Hawaiian Islands.

Experimental high resolution forecasts for USFS• The High resolution model output along with vegetation and terrain data

are integrated with the Hawaii Fire Danger Rating System (HFDRS) and fuel maps (from PDC) for fire risk management.

• The high resolution weather models are integrated with the FARSITE (Fire Area Simulator) fire behavior modeling system for fire spread predictions of wild land fires in Hawaii.

Other applications:• The ocean surface winds from our high resolution model output are also

used by several investigators within SOEST (K. Richards, T. Clarke).

• High resolution model output is also used by Prof. Liz Tam (Department of Medicine) for her study of effects of VOG on health.

My research interests are mainly in the following areas with Asian-Pacific and Hawaiian foci:

a) Island effects on airflow, weather and climate over the Hawaiian islands and the adjacent waters from data analyses and numerical modeling.

b) Analyses and modeling of high-wind and heavy-rainfall events over the Hawaiian Islands.

c) Island effects on early summer monsoon rainfall over Taiwan. (Heavy rainfall problems of Taiwan and the Hawaiian Islands are similar. They both are in a subtropical flow regime with orographic influences).

d) Improving the initial conditions of high resolution models with unconventional data (radar and satellite including COSMIC data)

for short-term (<2 days) experimental high-resolution model forecasts.

Connections with Asian Countries• Work with exchange students (or researchers) from

Asian countries including Thailand (US-AID), China (CMA), Taiwan (CWB, NCU), Vietnam, Philippine, Sri Lanka.

• Served as a consultant for the Central Weather Bureau (CWB), Taipei, Taiwan.

• Research Collaboration with the National Central University (NCU) and CWB, Taiwan on island effects on monsoon rainfall (served on several MS and PhD committees).

• Served as one of the main persons responsible for the coordination of ground based sounding network, wind profilers, tethersonde, dropsondes from research aircraft and a ship station. (Note: The deployment of NCAR S-Pol Doppler radar was already awarded to TIMREX by NSF).

• Will take the lead and work with investigators from National Taiwan University, National Central University, Central Weather Bureau, and US for a supplement request of sounding facilities (two mobile sounding sites, a wind profiler, a tethersonde site, additional dropsonde flights) to be reviewed by the National Science Council and various agencies in Taiwan. Expect continued research collaboration with colleagues in Taiwan and exchange of visits in the future.

• Ship is needed to sample upstream environment

• Perimeter sites around Taiwan are needed to sample diurnal cycle forcing, flow blocking and barrier jets

• Taichung is needed to fill in large data gap between Taipei and Tainan

• Makung is needed to sample conditions in Taiwan Straits, this site along with Taichung will help locate and sample Mei-Yu front

• ISS inland foothills site is needed to resolve slope flows over mountain barrier

• Ping-tung site will provide a proximity sounding to radar and additional data in heavy rain events over southern Taiwan
