San Beda Institutional Community Involvement Center Manila EXECUTIVE SUMMARY REPORT JULY 2017 SEPTEMBER 2017 1. VOLLEYBALL CLINIC CANOSSA CENTER, SILANG, CAVITE JULY 22, 2017 In response to the request of one of the Barangays in Bulihan, Silang, Cavite, the ICIC in partnership with the Department of Human Kinetics, College of Medicine and Canossa Sisters conducted a Volleyball Clinic. There were 16 volleyball players and three faculty from San Beda and around 90 participants from the community composed of children, youth and women. The program started with a short prayer and introduction of trainers and facilitators from San Beda and barangay officials from the community, this was followed by an input from Dr. Bayani Matitu, Chair of the Department of Human Kinetics and the lead trainer for the clinic. Dr. Matitu discussed the basics of volleyball, and the do’s and don’ts of playing the sport. After the input the players proceeded in teaching the community people. After the hands on training, a mini tournament was held among the participants for them to show off all the learnings they got from the clinic. The players were very happy with the warm acceptance of the community people while the beneficiaries were over whelmed with the skills and knowledge they got from the sports clinic.

1. VOLLEYBALL CLINIC

CANOSSA CENTER, SILANG, CAVITE JULY 22, 2017

2. TURN OVER OF DONATED GOODS FOR INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS OF MARAWI AUGUST 11, 2017

Donations for the internally displaced persons of Marawi were gathered from San Beda

community through the efforts of PAX: Student Movement, a new student organization under

the College of Arts and Sciences, in cooperation with ICIC and the CAS Student Council.

The initial donations were received last August 11, 2017 from the ICIC by representatives of

TESDA Director General, Secretary Guiling Mamondiong. They are Atty. Carim Panumpang

(Vice-President of Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte National Executive Coordinating Committee)

and Mr. Alex Solidum (Protocol Officer of TESDA) in the presence of students, faculty and

OPSA.

3. BRIGADA BEDISTA: BEDAN SCHOLARS GUILD AND PEER COUNSELORS OUTREACH

The CAS Bedan Scholars Guild and Peer Counselors headed by Ms. Karen Rimando assisted

by ICIC went to Hapay Na Mangga Elementary School last August 16, 2017 for their outreach

activity. Together, they distributed 100 packs of school supplies to Grade 1 pupils as part of

their community outreach. The group also distributed school supplies to teachers which

includes manila paper and pentel pen.

4. COMMUNITY GENERAL ASSEMBLY BARANGAY TINEJERO, PULILAN, BULACAN SEPTEMBER 9, 2017

Last September 9, 2017, the General Assembly of the Sikap Angat organization was held. Out of the 33 members of the organization 29 members attended the assembly. The much awaited event was an important move for the organization because this will help them revive the organization and implement again all their pending programs and activities. During the assembly they elected a new set of officers. The following are the officers of Sikap Angat for two years:

Treasurer – Annabelle Munsayac

Secretary – Coring Samia

Auditor – Agnes Doon

PRO – Mylene De Jesus, Vangie Hadcan, Teresita Gonzales, Teresita Aguayo, Derlyn Abad

The new set of officers promised to review their CBL and conduct a planning session with the assigned social worker to further improve the organization.

5. PROJECT MONITORING IN SITIO PACTIL, BAUKO, MOUNTAIN PROVINCE 11 – 14 SEPTEMBER 2017

The ICIC office together with the CAS Department of Economics and Department of Theology

visited our partner community for development in Pactil for the following purpose: 1. Monitoring

on the updates of the project in Pactil 2. Presentation and Validation of the Result of Impact

Assessment and 3. Provide a Talk on Marian Spirituality.

The visit started with an officers’ meeting of Saint Bede Mushroom Vegetable Growers

Association in the morning of September 12, 2017. It was facilitated by the assigned social

worker and assisted by Ms. Angela Balance. During the meeting, updates about the officers,

membership and livelihood project were discussed. Some of the updates were the vacancy of

some officers position, uncentralized funds of the association and the unused building donated

by DA. These issues and concerns were noted down for their scheduled planning the following

day.

IMPACT STUDY

The Department of Economics represented by Prof. Rulina Villoria and Prof. Ricardo Deri also

met with the members of St. Bede Mushroom and Vegetable Growers Association in the

afternoon of September 12, 2017 to present and validate the result of Impact Study that they

gathered last March 2017. To note, the study on the Impact of San Beda to Holy Family

Catholic Mission specifically in Pactil was done after the implementation of the six year

development plan from 2011 to 2017 in preparation for the phase out of the project. Findings

presented were: strong impact on spiritual development followed by livelihood development. It

is noteworthy that skills development has less impact for the respondents. It is however

declared by the group during the validation that they have skills especially in the production of

products for livelihood. Finalization of the write- up of the Impact Study conducted by

Department of Economics is still ongoing.

TALK ON MARIAN SPIRITUALITY

Simultaneously, while the Department of Economics was presenting the result of impact study to the people, the Department of Theology represented by Prof. Julius Tutor and Prof. Kim Guia was also giving a talk on Marian Spirituality. A session was given to Pactil Elementary School in the afternoon of September 12 which was attended by 30 Grade 4 to 6 pupils. Another session was given to Pactil Youth Organization in the afternoon of September 13,

2017 and was attended by 25 participants. The spiritual talk was organized for the birth month of Mary and in preparation for the month of the Holy Rosary.

The team also visited the local government of Bauko in the morning of September 13, 2017 to give courtesy to Mayor, Hon. Abraham Akilit and to give updates about the project in Pactil. During the visit, the unused building of the association was raised and he assured that he had assigned someone from the office of Municipal Agriculturist on the monitoring of the project in Pactil especially on the unused building donated by DA. The team also went to the Office of Municipal Agriculturist (OMAg), Municipal Planning and Development Office (MPDO) and Livelihood Unit to gather data for the research of the faculty.

The last activity was the facilitation of the planning of the Saint Bede Mushroom and Vegetable Growers Association and this was attended by 23 members. The social worker shared that even if the project of the San Beda is phasing out in Pactil as what all welfare organizations do, the association should continue to plan for the development of the group. During the planning, issues and concerns by the association based on the officer’s meeting and participatory situational analysis last visit are listed down. Members were asked to identify which are urgent and not urgent. The planning focused on the urgent concerns and they were instructed to assess its causes and effects. With the following causes, the group was able to identify action to solve each issue with timeline and responsible persons. Some of their planned activities are election of new president, centralization of funds of the association to the treasurer, and follow-up on the documents of donated mushroom building so the association can already use it. They were advised to update the assigned social worker of the progress of

implementation of their plan.

6. INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN UP

ROXAS BOULEVARD, MANILA BAY SEPTEMBER 16, 2017

Last September 16, 2017, the representatives from San Beda Manila together with other

volunteers from different institutions, agencies and schools gathered in Manila Bay for the

participation in the massive clean-up drive as part of the 32nd International Coastal Clean-up

Day.

7. ATTENDANCE IN ASIAN CONNECT

SEPTEMBER 21 – 22, 2017

A forum on Extension in Higher Education, dubbed as ASEANCONNECT was attended by the

ICIC Director Joselito J. Tablang last Sept. 21-22, 2017. The forum was held at Century Park

Hotel and was organized by Polytechnic University of the Philippines in partnership with

Commission in Higher Education and supported by APCORE or Asia-Pacific Consortium of

Researchers and Educators, Inc.

The forum gave an opportunity for us to benchmark the extension programs and community

researches of state universities and colleges in the Philippines, and other Asean universities

and colleges. Most of the extension programs presented are related to livelihood projects,

environmental sustainability, and community organizing and development programs with the

objective of empowering people in the community. This forum also opens the opportunity for

us to link with APCORE for possible collaboration with the member universities and colleges

in the areas of extension and research.

8. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS: SEMINAR ON FINANCIAL LITERACY BARANGAY DOLORES, TAYTAY, RIZAL SEPTEMBER 23, 2017

The members of Kababaihan ng San Gabriel and Hapay na Mangga Tutorial Parent’s Association attended the third part of Financial Literacy given by the Strategic Management Class of Prof. Robert Manois, Graduate School of Business. The purpose of seminar is to assist our partner communities on their social enterprise.

Topics presented during the seminar were value chain analysis, strength and weaknesses of their doormat business base on the student’s perspective, market presence and strategy. The students also discussed about accounting structures, competition and the issues and concerns of the association.

The students promised to assist the association on their main problem which is lack of raw materials specifically the scrap cotton cloth.

9. PSSBC ACTIVITY: TULOY PA RIN ANG AWIT NG BUHAY KO LITTLE SISTERS OF THE ABANDONED ELDERLY SEPTEMBER 27, 2017

As part of the enrichment process of the students of San Beda, Psychology Society of San

Beda (PSSBC) conducted a community involvement activity in Teresa Hornet Home of the

Abandoned Elderly run by the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly last Sept. 27, 2017 from

9:00 am until 11:30 am. The said activity serves as a venue for our students to share the

knowledge they have learned inside the classroom to the residents of the home.

The students prepared a short program about hygiene and self-care. The main theme of the

activity was not only to make the Lolas of the home happy but also for them to be aware of the

importance of hygiene and self-care among older persons. And also the need to have a positive

outlook in life even though they are staying in a home.

The Lolas and the sisters of the home were delighted and thankful for the visit. As for the

students they were also pleased with the experience they got from the activity and is thinking

of going back in the home to conduct another activity.
