  • THE WESTIN OTTAWA HOTELOntario, Canada

Ronnette Riley Architect (RRA) was responsible for a five phase design, renovation and 4th floor addition for the Westin Ottawa Hotel. RRA transformed the massive interior spaces into welcoming centers of activity by reconfiguring the hotels main lobby, lobby bar, res-taurant and porte-cochere. RRAs design required removal of a portion of the second floor to create a double story storefront with marble and glass entrance that looks in on an enlarged three-story atrium. A 14 ft. wide 36 ft. tall fireplace made from backlit alabaster and sculpted mahogany hangs from the third floor ceiling masking a four level escalator. A new stair to the lower level was created and a laundry facility was converted into a con-ference center. Banquet facilities on the 4th floor were added onto the building's setback. Three custom crystal chandeliers and carpeting were designed by RRA for the lobby to enhance the atmosphere.

  • UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIASpecial Collections Library, Charlottesville, VA

RRA designed the interiors for the new Jeffersonian style 62,000 sf library designed by Hartman Cox Architects. The program included a 226 person auditorium, reading rooms, studies, seminar and conference rooms, an academic research and conservation center and exhibit spaces including the Declaration of Independence Room housing Jeffersons papers and the Treasure Room.

The globe-shaped pendant lighting fixture that dominates the elliptical stairwell is also specially designed to allude to the library as a historical center of knowledge and discov-ery. The interior finishes, custom light fixtures, furniture and signage were all designed and selected to respect the rich traditional context and weight of the historical documents but with modern comfort and simplicity in mind.

  • COLUMBIA UNIVERSITYSchool of Public Health, New York, NY

RRA provided Columbia University with a comprehensive program and planning analy-sis for the Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health. The existing place consisted of six divisions, five centers, a central administration unit and additional programs scattered over nine sites on the Health Science Campus. After an extensive analysis and development study of all affected departments, RRA centralized the entire school and its functions in the 247,000 sf building of the Old Psychiatry Institute.

The gut renovation at 26 West 61st Street was a fast-track project with 6 weeks for design and construction documents and a 4 month construction schedule. The budget of $6.7 mil-lion, included full-scope architectural services from Schematic Design through Contract Administration as well as coordination of MEP and Structural Engineers, and Elevator Consultant for 51 offices, 18 classrooms, 4 student lounges, a career center and a two lobby.

  • SOJOURNER TRUTH LIBRARYHarlem, NY

RRA had the honor of being chosen by the Robin Hood Foundation to redesign the 2,200 sf Sojourner Truth Library that is part of Public School 149/207 in Harlem, New York. RRA created a reading area, writing area and multimedia center by designing custom furniture modules that serve as both seating and storage. Changes in materials, color and lighting differentiate each of these areas. The design solution provides the library with the flexibility it needs to adapt to the constantly changing nature of its space and functions.

  • WILLIAMSBURG DAY CAREBrooklyn, NY

Working closely with DDC, RRA conducted topic specific interviews with end-users who were associated with the project. They were asked not only about their space and equip-ment requirements but what worked and what did not work in facilities they have worked in. Through this process, the end users became active participants in finding the best pos-sible solutions. While this interactive process evolved, it served to monitor the projects cost, efficiency, constructability and schedule as well. This project was designed before LEED certification was created. The design called for many innovative and sustainable materials which we priced ahead of the bid process to help control costs.

  • BRONX COUNTY HALL OF JUSTICEBronx, NY

The 750,000 sf Bronx County Hall of Justice designed by Rafael Violy / DMJM Architects and located on a three block site, is part of the New York City Master Plan for New Yorks Courts.

Ronnette Riley Architects responsibilities included space planning for the various pro-gram requirements, a sustainable interiors study, and specifying and designing furniture for these spaces. In a break from the traditional, the building is sleek and contemporary with glass curtain walls, terrazzo tile floor, metal details, perforating metal ceiling, and natu-ral toned beech veneer. According the interior, furnishings, and mill work, are modern, with tapered forms, polished chrome detailing, natural wood finishes, and costume furniture including courtroom benches, conference tables and library furniture.

The program consists of seventy-two elements for Supreme and Criminal Court agencies, with 47 courtrooms and judges suites for the Supreme Criminal Court, a 645-seat jury assembly area, District Attorney offices, a law library, court facility offices for the NYPD, several contract agencies and the civic plaza that covers an underground parking structure for 400 cars, is landscaped and occupied by the Jury Assembly Hall.

  • WESTCHESTER COUNTY COURTHOUSEWhite Plains, NY

RRA was contracted by The Liro Group to remodel twenty-one courtrooms, and twenty-one judges chambers of The Richard J. Daronco Westchester County Courthouse. RRAs scope covered approximately 10% of the 280,000 sf $20 million rehabilitation. Our goal was to retain as much of the existing conditions in the 1070s design as possible and also create a space that thoughtfully integrated new materials. Through site verification and thorough piece-by-piece cataloguing, we salvaged and refinished the original courtroom furniture and gave special consideration to the sustainability of new elements.

The design also fulfills the security and safety requirements of the court system, meets ADA requirements, and retains the traditional hierarchy of seating in the judicial system.

RRA successfully renovated 2 Montgomery to accommodate PANYNJ current and future requirements, adding a new functioning facility to PANYNJs extensive property portfolio.

  • 1200 FIFTH AVENUENew York, NY

1200 Fifth Avenue Associates, LLC retained RRA to convert a 17 story 1928 Emory Roth apartment building to multi-million dollar condominiums. The renovation affected all aspects of the building including two cellar levels, a ground floor level which will be used primarily for lobby, medical offices and a superintendents apartment plus seventeen floors for residential use all which required major interior reorganization.

The client wanted to retain the pre-war feel of the existing building with modern high-end finished interiors. A three level penthouse was created from six apartments with multilevel roof terraces. To avoid PTAC units punching through the historic facade a central cooling tower was installed on the roof.

In addition, the firm assisted with the selection of furniture and finishes for the model apartments.

  • WELLINGTONNew York, NY

In collaboration with Rockwell Group, RRA was commissioned to update and rehabilitate the Wellington building in Manhattans Upper East Side. One of the main features of the building is the retail plaza on the 3rd Avenue faade, which was reconfigured and opened up by removing four vent towers from the garage below. The ductwork was relocated from below and the grille moved to the far faade making the plaza better utilized. In the lobby a nautical theme of teak and nickel slat walls, forms a bench and the concierge desk. A new glass and stainless steel canopy at the residential entry and over the retail stone-fronts streamlined the facades. New custom stainless steel and back-lit glass further update the buildings exterior. New stone cladding and frameless stone-fronts continue the moderniza-tion, accentuating the cast concrete ornamentation on the buildings facades. New paving and custom stone planters carry the nautical theme throughout the building property. The basement was reconfigured to create a residence center with gym, kids play area, meet-ing rooms, restrooms and pantry. The 28 residential floor corridors were renovated with new teak veneer doors and metal frames, new stainless steel elevator doors, teak and nickel insert paneling, new carpet and lighting throughout.

  • WESTMINSTERNew York, NY

RRA was hired in collaboration with the Rockwell Group, to update The Westminster, a 178-unit luxury rental building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The buildings main features include 2 exterior spaces on the ground floor which were under-utilized and badly maintained. A long entry corridor with a steep stair to the central lobby did not meet the needs of disabled tenants. The client sought to resolve these issues, and create a unified, modern aesthetic. A prominent entry was created alongside a new sculpture garden and custom glass feature wall, leading to a sinuous wood-paneled reception wall. The build-ings 20 residential floors were designed with wood and bronze columns, custom carpet, wall covering and new lighting.
