The New FCIP Program: Addressing the Gap in Financial Knowledge

With 40% of the insurance industry's agingworkforce predicted to retire by 2017, agrowing industry concern is that middlemanagers could find themselves catapultedinto top insurance jobs without having thenecessary knowledge to perform effectively.

The Insurance Institute's new FCIPProgram is addressing this knowledgegap, offering future insurance leaders acomprehensive understanding ofstrategic leadership and advancedmanagement principles with a focus onthe important aspects of a leadership role.

Financial management is an example of oneof the knowledge streams that have uniqueapplications to the insurance industry andcould mean the difference between successand failure as an insurance leader.

Jim Harvey, MBA, CA, retired ChiefFinancial Officer for Allstate Insuranceand founder of the Basic FinancialLiteracy course, says leaders in anyindustry need to have an understandingof finances, but in insurance, it's critical, because firms generally collect money inadvance of having to pay it out in claims.

“One of the important financial decisionsis ensuring this cash is invested wisely sothat the firm can make payment when

required without affecting their cashflow, and there is room to be grosslywrong,” says Harvey.

“Although future industry leaders maynot work directly in finance roles, they willneed to understand the financial piece inorder to do a 'big picture' analysis andknow the right questions to ask when theyinterpret and analyze financial reports.”

Financial Management for Insurance Leaders, the recommended third course in the newFCIP Program, provides the key conceptsand tools needed to evaluate businessdecisions with the goal of maximizing thevalue of an insurance firm. The course, which will be offered for the first time in Fall2011, provides the knowledge needed tointerpret an insurance company's annualstatement and employ financial ratioanalysis, benchmarking, and comparativeanalysis to evaluate the company's financialwell-being.

Peter Hohman, MBA, FCIP, ICD.D, Presidentand CEO of the Insurance Institute, saysthat the new FCIP Program balancesbusiness theory with insurance industryapplication, which makes the knowledgeprovided in the financial managementcourse especially important for anyonewith leadership aspirations.

“The essence of the insurance business isthat everyone is dependent on eachother; the industry runs on relationships. To perform effectively as a leader, youneed to have a working knowledge ofhow each department runs,” he says.

The recommended order of the firstthree courses in the new FCIP Program isStrategy in the P&C Insurance Sector,Leading in the Insurance World, and thenFinancial Management for InsuranceLeaders, for which students must pass anon-line math test upon registration.

Web Classes Gain Popularity with CIP Students

Web classes are appealing to CIP studentsas an alternative for those who findclassroom learning inaccessible orinconvenient because of geography orfamily, career, or other responsibilities. Inthe past year, the total number of Webclasses offered by local institutes andchapters has increased more than 30%. We expect this trend to continue as more

and more people become familiar withthe concept of learning on-line. Inaddition to the benefits usuallyassociated with on-line learning, CIPstudents have the advantage of access toa catalogue of real-time, instructor-ledinstruction that extends beyond theirlocal chapter or institute. In many cases, this allows students to complete theirCIP designations on time or even aheadof schedule using the method ofinstruction that suits them best.

The instructors who teach our Webclasses are industry veterans who offerstudents an engaging and dynamiclearning experience by creative use ofthe learning technology they haveaccess to. Web classes consist of weeklyreal-time instruction via Web-conferencing technology and aresupplemented by a course within ourLearning Management System (LMS).

This course allows instructors to useadditional tools, such as learningactivities, discussion forums, andinteractive quizzes; many instructors nowchoose to deliver their mid-terms on-linevia the LMS. In fact, the tools within theLMS have proven so valuable toinstructors that some have even opted toincorporate the same blended approachto their classroom instruction as well.

Participating in a Web class requiresaccess to a computer, a high-speedInternet connection (DSL/Cable orhigher), and a speaker or headset.

The software required is minimal: only aWeb browser and Adobe Flash Player. Weare pleased to see the interest in Webclasses growing and look forward tomany more students making use of thisopportunity. If you would like to learnmore about Web classes, please contactyour local institute or chapter.

Meet Your Instructors

Jim Orr, FCIP

With nearly 50 years' experience ininsurance, Northern Alberta's Jim Orr is atrue industry stalwart.

In 1963, he started working at Co-operators Insurance in Ontario, deliveringthe mail from desk to desk.

“In that day and age, I would have beenreferred to as the office boy,” Jim said. “Intoday's politically correct environment, Iguess I would just be called the officeperson.”

That “office person” went on to enjoy acareer at Co-operators for some 30 yearsand gained experience in almost all linesof insurance before choosing claims ashis area of focus.

Jim also studied hard, earning his AIIC(now CIP) designation in 1969 and FIIC(now FCIP) designation in 1975. Hebelieves his designations have been ofgreat benefit to him.

“At Co-operators, the Insurance InstituteCIP courses were written right into thejob descriptions and you had to achievecertain levels to advance internally,” he

said. “The courses certainly gave meconsiderable information from atechnical standpoint.”

Over the years, he continued to travel upthe ladder into management at Co-operators before taking a position withanother organization. For the next 10 yearsuntil his retirement in 2003, he was theGeneral Manager of the Peel MaryboroughMutual Insurance Company.

Throughout all those years, Jim's passionfor teaching was a constant parallel to hiscareer in insurance.

“My mother was a school teacher, and Ialways intended on being a teacher, aswell, but the insurance industry got inthe way of that,” he said. “So it was moreor less a natural thing for me to takeadvantage of the opportunity to teachInsurance Institute courses.”

Starting in 1980, Jim taught a broadrange of insurance courses at theInsurance Institute of Ontario'sConestoga chapter as well as Sheridanand Seneca Colleges.

Two years ago, Jim and his wife of 50 yearsand “chief inspiration,”Marilyn, moved toAlberta. He continued teaching, this time

with the Insurance Institute of NorthernAlberta, and was able to broaden hiscourse repertoire to include teaching C16The Business of Insurance.

Jim says he enjoys the interaction with thenew generations in the industry and enjoysfollowing their future career successes.

“The people entering the industry noware all well educated and definitely anasset to their employers. I get a greatfeeling of pride in seeing them attaintheir designations,” he said.

With all of his years of experience, Jimhas plenty of advice for current students.

“First of all, get your CIP designation,” hesaid. “Get experience in as many areas ofthe industry as possible and then choosean area that you enjoy working at andreally apply yourself. Show an interest inyour company's progress.”

Jim continues to enjoy his busyretirement in Alberta, where he and wifeMarilyn moved to maximize time withtheir young grandchild as he grows up.In his free time, Jim says he intends toenjoy a few more golf seasons and“watch our grandson develop into a fineyoung man.”

One of the strategies for promotingcareers in insurance is to dispel some ofthe misperceptions about the type ofpeople who work in insurance. One ofthe ways we do that is by recruiting andtraining industry professionals to be theface of the industry and to talk abouttheir careers in insurance to youth andcareer seekers. These “spokespeople”speak on behalf of the industry and help

introduce insurance careers to many whodon't know about the potential andhaven't explored the possibilities.

As an ambassador, you will be expectedto attend a one-hour orientationwebinar, participate in a four-hourtraining session (the next sessions are inAugust and September), and commit togiving two or more classroompresentations at the high school leveland to participating in two or moresecondary or post-secondary careerevents during the school year, fromSeptember to June.

If you are good at giving presentationsand enthusiastic about your career ininsurance, why not spend some time as aspokesperson—an ambassador for yourindustry! To find out more or to sign upas an ambassador, please check out theCareer Connections Web site atwww.career-connections.info.
