INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT (INOS)
• INOS is among the oldest and most established Marine and Oceanography research institute in Malaysia.
• 1979 - Started as a Marine Science Station of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sc. UPM
• 2001 - Accorded official status by the Malaysian Government after recommendation by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.
• As a platform for UMT Researchers (in general and Marine Science in particular) to excel.
• Recognised as Higher Institution Centre of ExcellentHICoE (MOHE) in July 2012
INOS
1. Undertake oceanography and marine-related research with a long-term focus for high societal benefit
2. Encourage advanced knowledge in ocean and marine system through multi-disciplinary research at national and regional levels.
3. Provide constructive and continuous trainings and research programs at postgraduate levels.
4. Manage, develop and coordinate marine data information and oceanographic facilities andinfrastructures to benefit the Malaysian scientific community, policy makers and industries.

OBIS NODE Malaysia
Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS)
• Recently appointed as Malaysia’ information and Data Node.• Became a center point for data collection
in the country• Conducted the first Southeast Asia OBIS
training course in October 2017
Ocean Biogeographic Information System
The most comprehensive gateway to the world’s ocean biodiversity and biogeographic data and information required to address pressing
coastal and world ocean concerns.
• Based of GBIF (Global Biogeographic Information System)• Open access
Current Information on Marine Species from Malaysia
1. No of identified species – based on foreign research, deposited specimens at foreign repositories
2. Species in publications by local scientists – not fully included
OBIS NODE Malaysia
• Designated to Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) in November 2017• Managed by South China Sea Repository and Reference Centre (RRC)
– a unit under INOS • Contact Person: Assoc Prof Dr Aidy@Mohd Shawal Muslim, Dr
Izwandy Idris
Current Progress
• Modifying RRC databases according to OBIS standard• Uploading the databases into OBIS platform• Involvement in OBIS Steering Committee
Future Activities
• Compiling biodiversity data nationwide through literature surveys and databases from other institutions
