Meditation on the Great Feast of Pentecost
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were
sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as of fire, which settled upon each of them.. And they were filled with the
Holy Ghost and began to speak in foreign tongues, even as the Holy Ghost prompted them to speak.” (Acts 2).
The first Pentecost was truly a memorable day in the history of the Church. On this day the Church, the Barque of Peter, was formally launched. By a marvelous outpouring of the Holy Ghost it was now fitted with all that was requi-site to endure to the end of time. The Master had built His ship well; on Pentecost He commanded His ship to go forth into all nations, converting the inhabitants; the actions of His Church would now truly be divine actions. A wonderful transformation was manifested in the twelve Apostles through the coming of the Holy Ghost. A so-ciety of men and women, the human element, received its divine soul and would henceforth speak and act with divine authority and power. Because of the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, the Mystical Body of Christ - the faithful in union with Christ the Head - became one living organism. From this understanding then, comes an understanding of our individual and personal share in the gifts of Pentecost. When the Holy Ghost was given to the Church, He was also given to us, the members of the Church. To each He gave the indispensable gift of life, meaning the divine life that makes us children of God and heirs of heaven. The gift of charity is “poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Ghost who has been given to us,” (Rom. 5:5). And with charity and the supernatural gifts of Faith and Hope, also come the seven gifts: wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. These will blossom and bring forth the twelve fruits of charity, joy, peace, pa-tience, benignity, goodness, mildness, faith, long-suffering, modesty, continence, and chastity, if we but cooperate. Obviously, the Holy Ghost plays a genuine role in the social and collective life of the Church, and in the individual piety and Christ-likeness of each of us. Jesus tells us explicitly that obedience to God’s laws and the sincere striving for sinlessness is essential for maintaining the friendship of the Holy Ghost. Pentecost is the time when we should once again renounce Satan and all his pomps and works, and renew our baptismal vows, pledging our loyalty to Christ and His Church. Earnestly implore the Holy Ghost to abide personally with us for “the day is now far spent.” “Know you not that you are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (I Cor. 3).
