  • Dear Members,

The spring of 2012 has been most noteworthy for awards, appointments, branch events and committee planning for Women’s Institute on PEI.

I want to personally thank and congratulate many award winners across our Island. It was also a special and momentous occasion to be awarded the Diamond Jubilee Award along with seventeen past Provincial Presidents of WI. We thank all of you for your contributions across PEI resulting in these symbolic awards. At our very successful County Conventions congratulations go the following awards and recipients: Evelyn Clow from South Pinette/Flat River, The Adelaide Hoodless Award of Honor; Louise MacLeod of Queen’s County, and Rita MacDonald of King’s County, Golden Book of Recognition Award and Karen Craig, Friend of WI Award.

Our trip to the National Convention to BC was outstanding on various levels. Eleven PEI delegates in attendance saw Marie Kenny installed as PEI’s fourth President of FWIC, and Carol MacLellan inducted as our elected official to the FWIC Board— congratulations to both of these ladies. The fellowship, provincial commitments and learning from the Convention will be remembered for years to come.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we would like to congratulate Past Board Member Emily Bryant on receiving the Order of Prince Edward Island Award. The award is to be presented in September from the Lieutenant Governor.

As summer is drawing to a close we hope you have taken the opportunity to enjoy events as well as the collaboration with PEI’s National Park. Congratulations to Institute Branches who held events and gatherings throughout the summer, as we realize you are busy the whole year through. Lastly, our sincere thanks to Exhibition Chairman Carol Connick and Co-Chair Robin Davidson, Board members, various volunteers, contributors and visitors to this year’s Handcrafts and Arts Division of the Provincial Exhibition – We really appreciate your commitment to our Exhibition.

We look forward to seeing you this fall at our Health Fair in September and Fall Workshops. Best Wishes and very proud of what you do for Home & Country.

  • Reflections from National FWIC President It is both an honor and privilege to write this report as your newly installed National President. I am excited about the three years ahead, and certainly will need your prayers and support as we moved forward taking steps to strengthen our organiza-tion. Together we will embark on new initiatives and build on existing legacies. We have a strong, sure foundation, and as we strive to re-energize F.W.I.C.. We will face challenges I am sure, but each one will be an opportunity to grow, to rethink and to develop an even more effective unified voice for women across Canada.

Convention 2012 in Sidney B.C. certainly was a tremendous success as women from across Canada gathered for the National Convention of Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada It was a delight to see so many W.I. Friends in Sidney and I want to especially thank the P.E.I. delegation for making such a special effort to be there, your support is appreciated.

The Theme for the triennium was ―Coast to Coast ~ Women’s Institute Alive and Well‖ and we certainly experience that as the Mary Winspear Convention Centre was a bustling site of W.I. members partici-pated in both social and business sessions. The Speakers included: Peter Legge, an internationally ac-claimed professional speaker; Linda Wegner, a workshop consultant with the Agricultural Institute of Management in Saskatchewan; and Elaine Froese, a specialist in helping people in agriculture address business concerns and how all women need to be money smart.

Tour Day was excellent with the finale a salmon dinner at Sooke with special entertainment being a l oggers show of skills. One afternoon was filled with a diverse series of workshop and one evening we got to enjoy the Sidney Summer Street Market. The triennium project ―The Heart Truth‖ came to a suc-cessful completion with the celebration of a Red Dress Gala. Immediately following the closing ceremony the new installed Board met for its first meeting, where we set the course we will follow over the next three years.

Executive members will meet in November in Ottawa and over the summer I will be in contact with Com-mittee Chairs. My hope and goal over my term is to strengthen communication between National and Provinces. I also will be working on enhancing ways provinces can share ideas more effectively with each other.

The future of Women’s Institute lies in each of our hands, we have been passed a brilliant torch and it is our responsibility to pass it on to the next generation so the lives of our children and our children’s children will be as rich and as blessed as ours. I ask you to work with me to make our Communities the best place ever to live, as we work together for Home and Country. Marie Kenny F.W.I.C. President
