Factionalism: The Evolution of the

American Political System IR-885 “Factionalism is a spirit not to be encouraged...” George Washington, 1796 Farewell Address. Despite Washington's misgivings, factionalism–political parties–has been a cornerstone of American political life since before the Revolution. This course will trace the evolution of the American two-party system from the Patriots and Loyalists to today's Democrats and Republicans while also studying such long-vanished parties as the Federalists; the Whigs and the original Socialists. The course will also examine the impact of short-term parties such as the Free Solders; Constitutional Unionists, Bull Moose Progressives and Dixiecrats. What impact did third-party candidates---TR; Wallace; Perot, Debs---have on the contemporary national debate? And will the two-party system survive...or will it splinter into a three-party system: Socialists; Centrists and Conservatives? Leonardo da Vinci: the Artist as Genius IR-456 The commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci in 2019, marked by a blockbuster exhibition at the Louvre in Paris, is an ideal opportunity to re-examine the artist’s legacy. In many ways, he is the most fitting example of the Universal Man – the Renaissance artist who was skilled in wide-ranging disciplines such as painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as scientific fields like engineering, anatomy, botany and geology. Yet it was precisely the nature of his genius that seems to have prevented Leonardo from completing many of the projects he imagined. This course will examine Leonardo’s career from his early training in Florence to his death in France, and will consider some of the challenging aspects of his oeuvre, from incomplete works to problematic attributions. ** Churchill: Britain’s Incomparable Leader IR-876 Winston Churchill’s life was a roller coaster of bitter failures and glorious achievements, of which recent film biographies only scratch the surface. This 2-week class tells the full story, including Churchill’s youthful meteoric rise to the corridors of British political power, and his ensuing setbacks in World War I and dubious party-switching that left him, at middle age, a near-forgotten back-bencher. Only his prescient diagnosis of Hitler’s threat propelled his resurgence, setting the stage for his unparalleled leadership of Britain during World War II and beyond. Also, Churchill’s support of Jewish causes, while far from perfect, stood out compared with those of his British contemporaries. Still, Churchill’s clinging to a dying British imperialism and stubborn indifference to wartime India’s mass famine hastened the demise of British rule. Throughout, we will listen to and watch Churchill’s speeches, including the timeless addresses by which he steeled Britons to resist the Nazis and warned the West of the Soviet Iron Curtain, and defined the preeminent value of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. Fridays: March 6, 20 Room: TBA/ Time: 11:00 – 12:30 p.m. Instructor: Jess Velona
