Who are we? Why do we have a B’School?

IFMR, established in 1970 as a not-for-profit organization, was

sponsored by ICICI, the House of Kotharis and other large

corporates.

The Board of Governors includes eminent business leaders and

academicians from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, IITs and IISc, and is

chaired by Mr. Narayanan Vaghul, former Chairman, ICICI Bank.

IFMR has been conducting research and providing policy inputs to

national and international bodies.

IFMR is approved as an institution of national importance by the

Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

Faculty members at IFMR have worked and consulted with both

national and international organizations. IFMR’s PGDM program

was launched in the year 2000, specifically to address

Corporate India’s need for managers equipped to deal with the transitions in the Indian and Global economy.

No wonder that our placement record is flawless since the inception of the PGDM program, and increasing

number of Corporates seek our graduates.

Our two year full time Post Graduate Diploma in Management is recognized by AICTE and The Association of

Indian Universities, as equivalent to an MBA.

We have been recognized in bona-fide surveys which

use factual data for rankings and ratings; we do not

participate in rankings which are based on

perceptual data, which are not reliable /legitimate.

What value do we deliver to you?

“The counsel given to us by our board member Dr. Nachiket Mor was that we prepare our students, not

just for job, but for a career spanning two or three decades.” Mr. C V Krishnan, President IFMR

Given the Volatile Uncertain Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) world of

business, we have identified two competencies required for sustained

success.

First the ability to suspend one’s beliefs and reexamine one’s mental

map in light of the available information. This calls for intellectual

strength, to entertain more than one perspective without being

overwhelmed by any of them.

The second is resilience. This is the most consistent finding in all the

research on success across domains. In the words of Michael Jordan,

“the game has its ups and downs, but

you can never lose focus of your own goals and you can’t let yourself

be beat for want of effort”.

Accordingly we focus on building intellectual strength and emotional resilience.

Corporates have recognized this . . .

ICICI BANK: “IFMR students are not only

technically equipped in the requisite work skills

but also excel in their practical applications. Their

value addition to the organization has been

immense.”

DUN & BRADSTREET: “Technically strong, with

knowledge of real-world scenarios, IFMR

students would be an asset for which every

organization they become a part of.”

DELOITTE: “Our organization has been associated with IFMR graduates for some time now; the students are

industry ready and well trained in soft skills. They are leaders as well as great team players.”

APTIVAA CONSULTING: “The management trainees of IFMR at Aptivaa are all dynamic individuals with the

desire and enthusiasm to really go out and make a difference. I wish them luck.”

. . . and our Alumni testify to the same.

Hari Tripathy, General Manager, HCL AXON : There are a few decisions which change your life; deciding to join

IFMR's PGDM course after CAT 2001 was surely one of those for me. PGDM was an amazing learning experience

& it changed my perspective towards my career completely. Being placed in a fortune 500 manufacturing firm

from the campus was surely the most decisive moment of my career. Subsequent success in my next job with

SAP also derived a lot from my PGDM. I currently head the ERP, SCM, CRM Practices for HCL AXON & IFMR’s is

certainly one of the main factors which has helped me reach this level in a very short span of time.

Jatin Jain, Associate, Ernst & Young: IFMR provides students the environment to balance academics with extra-

curricular activities. The top management and faculties have always been supportive and encouraged us to

assume greater responsibilities, try newer things and look beyond academics. We had the privilege to study and

learn from faculty members of international repute who have honed our skills in a manner that has personally

helped me a lot in my professional career.

Rajiv Mohapatra, Senior Risk Consultant , Capgemini Consulting : My two years stay at IFMR has helped me

significantly establish myself as a consultant. Developmental research combined with case based approach

helped me in understanding the application of theory. The financial electives offered here have helped me in

directly using the models learnt here at my work place. It gave me a seamless transition from campus to

corporate.

How do we do it consistently?

Over half our faculty has worked in Corporates in senior

management roles (VP/GM) and brings with them the

ability to sense and respond to volatility; With 40 years of

research pedigree we train our students to courageously

face uncertainty.

Doctorates from reputed institutes (IIM/IIT) and foreign

universities constitute 3/5th of our faculty - they help our

students unravel complexity. One sixth of our professors are

former CEOs from large Corporates who coach our students

to take decisions in the context of ambiguity.

All our professors bring to the classroom result orientation, a distinguishing characteristic of the management

profession. Their efforts are not directed towards a hypothetical average student, but at making the real last

student in the classroom participate. Consequently they deploy multiple methods, including but not limited to –

Audio Visual Sessions, Case Analysis, Group Assignments, Laboratories, Management Games, Simulation, Video

recording and playback, and Workshops – so the configuration of our classrooms often change between sessions.

PGDM @ IFMR

The primary objective of our PGDM program is to build a cohort of managers with intellectual strength and

emotional resilience to carve out their careers, growing the business in an ever changing economy. To achieve

this objective the program incorporates the following features:-

First we emphasize competency building and not just

knowledge acquisition. This has influenced not only the

courses we offer but also the pedagogy and assessment

tools that we use.

Second we are strongly convinced that regardless of the

role they perform, the manager is only as effective as

he/she communicates. We not only have courses dedicated

to communication, we provide opportunities to

communicate both in writing and orally as part of the

course structure and evaluation in our all subject matter

courses.

Dr. Lakshmi Kumar, Chairperson PGDM

Third, our research in Corporates has shown as that finance is the life blood of business, and a manager in any

role cannot move up the system without strong fundamentals in finance. While we encourage students to pursue

electives in areas of their choice, we consistently provide strong inter linkage of all functional disciplines with

Finance. Once employed, our graduates have a decisive edge on this account; for example, our Marketing

students get their advertisement budgets approved by working out the return on investment, while our

IS/Operations students justify their contingency investments with reference to accrual based accounting, and our

HR students adept at valuation of the contributions from a candidate, use that to address salary-fitment issues.

15 of 27

Fourth, management education requires interaction with managers – we do it in many ways - a two month

Summer Internship; Guest Lectures are part of almost every course; Seminars are conducted on contemporary

issues; students are encouraged to work on live projects with Corporates – thru video conferences and webinars.

Fifth, every student in our PGDM program has a designated faculty member as a mentor for the entire period of

the program. The students work with their mentors in identifying their own gaps and taking steps to address

them. Students often bounce their ideas and share their anxieties with their mentors, expecting nothing more

than to feel understood. The relationship that our students have with their faculty mentors, sometimes spill

beyond the program well into their first year at work.

IFMR Campus

3,00,000 square feet world class campus in 40 Acres of land – that is a lot of space for only 360 students from

two batches of PGDM; A gated community, it is a self-sustained, secure and serene space for young minds.

For nature lovers, we have a water body, and a walkway around the perimeter of the campus, with plenty of

greenery, and ducks. For sportswomen and men, we have three volleyball courts, a basketball court, a

badminton court, a hockey ground, football ground and cricket ground, tables for TT, and separate gyms in the

ladies and gents hostels, fully equipped for all round fitness and body building.

The entire campus is Wi-fi enabled. The classrooms are air-conditioned and multimedia enabled. The lab with

100 computers is the setting for simulated and real trading on the NSE, live feeds, and simulation software.

24 of 27

There is an ATM in the main building and we have automated launderettes in the hostels. Hostel rooms occupied

on twin sharing basis, are provided with attached bath.

Our HT Parekh Library has electronic journal access through EBSCO, JSTOR and Science Digest, Corporate

database prowess, Capita Line, etc. apart from a rich collection of books and multimedia material; It is recognized

as a World Bank Repository.

The mess is managed by a students’ committee which

decides the menu, and that reflects the pan-India mix of our

students. Then there is the 12 noon to 11 pm QSR which

serves Chinese, Mughalai and South Indian cuisine, and the

evening Chaat-wala who has a huge fan following.

There is a store within the campus for stationery, soft drinks,

packed snacks; all items used by students, that they do not

need to go out to buy anything.

Yet students do go out to Eat Street, a food court, within Sri City and Cafe Coffee Day, which is just outside.

While IFMR’s panel doctors visit the campus for consultation, the Frontier Life Hospital group operates an

Emergency Care Center within Sri City providing 24/7 medical coverage, Ambulance Service, and a Pharmacy.
