CORPORATE COMMUNICATION and POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT
The French Academy of Sciences celebrates 60 years of CERN (2014)
A delegation of the Parliamentary Office for
Scientific and Technological Assessment visits CERN
(May 2019)
Video presentations of CNRS medal winners
Outreach and communications are essential to secure public understanding and political support for current and future experiments and research programmes.
Strong communications is key to ensure the sustainability of our field by attracting the next generation of scientists and can play a positive role in promoting equality, diversity and inclusion through specific communications campaigns.
Particle physics captivates the general public and is a good topic for the media, but requires specialised communication efforts to make very complex subjects accessible.
Social media and image production are now core activities of any communications department, requiring professional skills and dedicated funding.

FINDINGS
Read also “Communicating particle physics matters,”EPPCN report to ESPPU, dec. 2018
Our strengths:
- Lively networks of communicators at both national and international levels - Very large number of tools and resources to build on- Great reactivity and close collaboration with scientists in the field- Varied and innovative initiatives all over France, targeting all types of
audiences
However, French ECO efforts are very scattered and depend on occasional funding from large research projects or one-off initiatives. Less dispersed resources could allow for more ambitious projects with a broader target audience.

CONCLUSION
Thanks to my IN2P3 and Irfu colleagues for their valuable input
