Institut National de I’Audiovisuel (INA)

INA (Institut National de l’Audiovisuel) is a government company founded in 1975 in charge of archiving the French Television and Radio Broadcast from their beginning.They have stored all the film rolls (from the early days) and all the tapes (in various formats) used for the French television.Till now, INA has over one million hours of films & tapes properly stored and preserved in their archives.This is an almost complete memory of French TV and Radio from their birth until now.

Why Accusys ExaSAN?

Challenge:During the process of film digitalization, they have to frequently move files among different workstations and the external storages to work on the different jobs.To roam and migrate these files costs much time; they need to figure out a more efficient method to move files to improve their workflow.

Solution:ExaSAN, together with StorNext allows them to have an affordable but efficient sharing platform.With ExaSAN storages and SAN, one worker in INA can easily backup files to the central database and share files with other workers to work on different stages in digitalization.

Workflow with ExaSAN

Firstly, INA uses film scanners (Lasergraphic “The Director” with Mac Mini) to scan 16mm or 35mm film rolls.In this way, INA digitalizes the videos into 2K or 4K 10bit 25fps DPX files.The file size depends on the film format, on the color and on the resolution. In average, it is around 900GB to 4~5TB per hour.Then, INA saves the DPX files into ExaSAN storages through SAN; they also make backup of these DPX files in LTO archive.

Access the storage through SAN, and do color grading

on the videos

After the film restoration, workers begin to use one Mac and two Linux workstations to do color grading on the videos.With SAN, these different workstations can also access the digitalized videos easily.The major software they use to do color grading is DaVinci Resolve.

works or format converting

In addition to color grading, INA workers will also use other software, like Media Composer and Edius, to do some post-production works and format converting.The workstations used in doing these jobs can access the files in the storages through SAN, and directly edit the files.

When the videos editing has been done, INA will convert the videos into different formats for different purposes.e.g. They will use OpenCube to transcode some videos into JPEG2000.Similarly, workers directly read and edit the files saved in the ExaSAN storage through SAN.

Backup the completed videos into another database through LAN

Finally, they will make a copies of the files in ExaSAN storage in another database through LAN network as backup.Workers will do some editing jobs, such as sound editing, on files in this LAN database.For permanent preservation, INA will further make copies of the digitalized videos in LTO archive.
