Over the last weekend, I was trying to update my Bootcamp from Windows 7 to Windows 8RTM on my Macbook Pro 15. I have already upgraded OSX Lion to Mountain Lion few weeksback.

The initial thought I had was to upgrade Windows 7 inplace to Windows 8. Later I decided toperform a clean install. So the installation steps are as followed.

1. First I got the Windows 8 ISO from MSDN subscription.

2. As I dont have any DVDs available at that time, I decided to perform the USB stickinstallation with bootcamp. Later realized as mine is not a Macbook Air, I dont have option toselect USB installation. The only option available was SuperDrive(DVD Drive) installation.

3. At that point after some Bing searches, I came to know the following workaround to enableUSB installation for Bootcamp.

a. Open the Bootcamp info.plist file with Xcode as below. (You can select Showpackage Contents and then navigate to Boot Camp Assistant\Contents folder asin below screenshots)

b. Add an entry at item0 in the DARequiredROMVersion"s array with value takenfrom System Informations Boot ROM Version.

Also update the USBBootSupportedModels array with the first part of the BootROM Version (MBP61 as from previous screenshot and add it as in secondscreenshot to the array).

Once after updating this rerunning Bootcamp Assistant will have the option toinstall from USB as below.

4. After selecting all the above 3 options, proceed next and select your Windows8 ISO image file. The boot camp assistant will write down the ISO data into USBalong with Windows support software downloaded from Apple.

Note: The copy process to USB might take long time and also sometimes youfeel there is no progress happening in copying and Boot camp is stuck. But thatis not true. I had instances where Boot camp was kind of idle for 10-15 minutesbut it was actually writing the content to USB.

5. After completion of USB copy, you will be prompted to select the drive partitionto install. Provide the sufficient disk space to Windows partition and continuefurther to format and start installation.

6. Boot camp assistant will initiate the restart of the Mac and Windows 8installation will start automatically.

Note: If you have error like no boot media available kind of error message. Holddown the option key and continue to boot from Windows partition shown in thedrive options available.

7. The Windows 8 installation process will continue here. I am not going todiscuss the details of Windows 8 installation here. After Windows 8 successfulinstallation, you should start installing the Windows BootCamp support files



downloaded from Apple. These will be available as part of the USB (BootCampdownloaded these files from Apple and copied into USB at the time copyingWindows 8 ISO)

8. After successful installation, you can hold down the option key and boot intoMac OS and select your startup disk from System preferences.

9. I have VMWare Fusion 5 installed and I use BootCamp installed Windows 8with it. VMWare Fusion 5 supports Windows 8

10. Provide sufficient RAM and Cores to run the Windows 8 VM.

I hope these instructions will help you to get started with Windows 8 and Mac OSX together.

i added my computer "MBP31.0070.B07" and "MBP31" but still don't get the option tocreate a boot disk? any help?

Did you add those values to the ends of the arrays? Try moving them to thetop.

Hint:"Your bootable USB drive could not be created error".A very simple solution: make sure the ISO file is not mounted when running the Boot CampAssistant!

great post. thank you very much. everything seems to work fine, but then i get the "no boot media availible kind of message".holding down the option key only gives me the choice of booting into recovery or bootingosx normally. does the bootcamp partition have to be on the primary hard drive? ( i have assd for osx and a hhd for files and hopefully windows) cold that be the problem? and isthere a way to fix it? (other than installing windows on the primary drive)

ok.. i checked. the optibay drive doesnt seem to be the issue. i tried to install iton my primary drive and get the same error message: "no boot device found"i wonder how i can make the bootcamp partition appear in the selection thatshows if you press ALT at the start.is there anything else that has to be considered?thanks in advance for your help

yes.. everything went smoothly. the damn thing just won't boot from thependrive. i tried out different pendrives and also an external hdd via usb, also toboot from an external dvd drive. but my mbp is stubborn. i read in general youcant boot non-apple media from an external source on a macbook pro. don'tknow if thats true, but in my case it seems so.

i found another way to install win8 on a bootcamp partition on my hdd in anoptibay though. the instructions i found in this blog entry "http://8na.de/?p=124"

this worked great for me-win 8-optibay hdd ("disk1"-mountain lion-vmware fusion 5 trial (free from their webpage)

Hey there, I went through each step and everything worked fine until I selectedmy windows 8 iso file and clicked continue to download it to my usb it gave methe error: your bootable usb drive could not be created -Boot Camp onlysupports Windows 7 installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file forWindows 7 installation.

Im running mac osx 10.8.3

Any help would be great :)

I have a 2012 iMac. Trying to download the Windows Support Software using Boot Campinstaller. Have a DVD inserted into the onboard optical drive as I chose that option for thedownload. The download appears to be stuck at about 20%. Is this a problem, or does thisdownload take a long time. My Internet speed is about 1.5 mbs.

It took almost 40 minutes to complete the download and copy to USB stickduring my install and the copy progress seems like stuck in the middle but itcontinued on its own after few minutes (10-15mins) or so.

hi, when i install windows 8, everything goes fine. When I'm setting up my Windows, I need to choose one of my drives to install Windows 8on, but can't get any of my partitions to work.Always says it's MBR partitioned and I need an GPT structure..

manual until i need to choose bootcamp partition for win8. "Windows cannot beinstalled to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFIsystems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks." But for Windows i needMBR, not GPT!? What should I do to install Win8 from USB? Help me please, YD Ramu

If you have Bootcamp Assistant running; close it and then try to edit it.

I had to copy the info.plist file and paste it onto the desktop to edit it. Then afterI edited the file I copied it from the desktop and pasted it back into the contentsfolder and selected REPLACE to overwrite it.

When I enter MBP61 to the preUSBBootSupportedModels (I cannot findUSBBootSupportedModels in info.plist) and then restart Bootcamp assistant, error messagebox appear and cannot start.

I'm having the same problem as wongyld. There is no USBBootSupportedModels arraylisted, and when I add "MBP81" to preUSBBootSupportedModels, it causes the BootcampAssistant to crash upon opening. Do I need to add the USBBootSupportedModels arraymyself? And if so, how should I do that?

(I'm running a 13" MacBookPro late 2011.)

It instantly did the trick. To summarize that video, what you have to do is makesure that no MacBookPro model in preUSBBootSupportedModels is higher thanyour own.

So following most of the directions in Ramu's post, open up Info.plist with Xcodeor a text editor and find the array preUSBBootSupportedModels instead.Change MacBookPro8,3 listed under it something lower than your own model(such as MacBookPro7,3).
