1. Checking Compatibility tado°’s Smart Thermostat (ST) is a thermostat and wireless temperature sensor in one! It can be installed in place of an existing thermostat or act as a wireless sensor and remote control when installed together with the tado° Extension Kit (EK). The Extension Kit works as a dual channel programmer and receives the temperature infor- mation from the Smart Thermostat. It controls both heating and hot water.

Can tado° be Connected?

tado° can be connected in all households with an individual heating system.

tado° is compatible with all single and dual relay controlled heating systems.

tado° is only compatible with single zone heating at the moment, however tado° will be compatible with multiple zone heating setups by the autumn of 2015.

2. Connecting the tado° Bridge The Bridge is the intermediary device between the tado° Computer Servers and the Smart Thermostat as well as the Extension Box (if present). It is connected to a router via an ethernet cable and communicates wirelessly with the Smart Thermostat and the Extension Box. Below are the 2 options for powering the Bridge:

8

After connecting the Bridge the status LEDs will show the following:

1. All lights solid for 2-3 seconds 2. The link light remains solid, other 2 flash then become solid in sequence 3. The link light flashes continuously

link On

router On

internet On

Once stage 3 has been reached then the installation can proceed. The “link” LED will be solid at first until the other lights are also solid and then it will switch to flashing to indicate that pairing mode is active. The LEDs on the Bridge do not light up directly after plugging the Bridge in. What can be done? This indicates that the Bridge is not sufficiently supplied with power. In this case, the Bridge has to be powered by another source (USB port/wall socket). If the power supply has been tested and confirmed and the LEDs still do not light up, please contact the tado° Installer Service Team.

3. Wiring tado° Smart Thermostat The Smart Thermostat supports both 230V and extra low voltage interfaces. The wiring diagram on the back of the device shows the wiring for the relay operation. There are three unlabelled isolated parking slots for unrequired wiring from the thermostat which is being replaced. Three low voltage terminals for analog and bus connection are located on the far right hand side of the Smart Thermostat.

Replacing a Relay Thermostat

COM and NO (and NC if present in the current thermostat) are to be connected. Any additional wires, such as a neutral wire are placed into the unlabelled parking slots next to the relay terminals. They do not have any function other than safely parking individual excess wires.

When the Extension Box is installed, the Smart Thermostat acts as a wireless sensor and remote control and does not have to be wired in.

tado° also supports analog and digital interfaces. To find out more about how to connect there interfaces to tado°, please visit www.tado.com/installers

tado° Extension Kit The Extension Box has connectors for relays (labeled 1-4) as well as analog and digital interfaces (labeled A, -, +). Two relay wiring configurations are possible and are distinguished by two different jumper positions.

Jumper Position 1: Potential Free Wiring Connection

The power supply is separated from the relays. This wiring option is to connect low voltage single relays. If a UK standard backplate is present some rewiring might be required so that the wires correspond to tado°’s “Relay Wiring 1” as indicated on the back of the Extension Box.

The Extension Kit comes with a three-wire cable meaning that an additional cable is required for connecting to potential free relays on boilers (4 wires). The power supply can either be taken from the boiler itself or from a wall socket nearby.

Jumper Position 2: Switched Live

This wiring option corresponds to a 230V dual relay programmer. If a UK standard backplate is present and wired as a 230V dual relay (central heating and hot water) the Extension Box can simply be mounted on the existing backplate and does not require any rewiring.

12

Switching the Jumper Position

The jumper position is changed by removing the jumper on the back of the Extension Box and turning it by 180°.

Connecting the Cables

The Extension Box backplate corresponds to a UK standard backplate. To ensure good connectivity, it is important to insert the wires between the two metal plates.

6. Testing After installation a test of the heating system is essential. This includes testing the heating in both directions by increasing the desired temperature, waiting for a few minutes for the boiler to fire up and then decreasing the desired temperature and waiting for a few minutes for the boiler to stop firing.

Setting temperature to 25°C

Waiting for the boiler to fire up

Reducing temperature to 10°C

Waiting a few minutes for the boiler to shut

off

The test has been successful when the boiler creates to the control command within 5 minutes. Please note that outside temperature controlled heating systems might take a bit longer to react.

20

The boiler does not react. What can be done?

● First the wiring is to be checked. Is the boiler and tado° connected correctly? Is the jumper position on the back of the Extension Kit correct?

● Has the correct interface configuration been set? To check this the installer menu can be

opened again.

● For relay interface configurations check for the “clicking” sound on the controlling device shortly after the setpoint is turned up and down. If the click is audible and the heating does not come on, then after turning the power off the wires in COM and NO can be joined together to see if this fires up the boiler. If this is the case, it indicates that the incorrect interface has been set.

● When both wiring and interface configuration have been checked and the test is still not

successful, a reset of the devices is advisable. This is done by pressing the button on each device for more than 8 seconds until it restarts.

Overview of the Interface Configuration tado° is compatible with many different heating systems and interfaces. This is achieved by configuring the interface tado° uses on the Smart Thermostat. The following table gives an overview of interfaces offered by tado°. It is important to note that one interface can be represented by a number of configurations. The information on hot water control is always indicating tado°s capability of controlling the hot water, but it has to be checked if this is also supported by the boiler tado° is connected to. This can usually be confirmed in the boiler manual.

All codes that are not listed in this table are not configurable although they are shown in the installer menu.
