This guide describes how to install and configure the DynamicAccess network performance manager 2.0 (NPM) on computers running Windows NT and the DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 on Windows NT, Windows 95, and Windows 98.

These instructions are intended for network administrators who have experience installing software and using management tools for an Ethernet network.

This guide is created in Microsoft Word 97/2000 format and can be printed as well as viewed online. You can also view this document in Internet Explorer. If you do not have Microsoft Word 97, you can download and install the free Microsoft Word 97/2000 Viewer from:

Chapter 1 - Product OverviewChapter 1 - Product Overview

What is the DynamicWhat is the DynamicAccess Access network performance managernetwork performance manager 2.0?2.0?

The DynamicAccess network performance manager 2.0 (NPM) is part of the 3Com DynamicAccess technology family of endstation/server-based monitoring and management products. Its software-based approach gathers data directly from the endstations (desktops and servers) around the network to provide a single source for application performance data, network performance data, system health information, and network performance management.

Using the DynamicAccess LAN agents running on endstations, the NPM collects full performance data at its source. Using this data, application response times and system metrics are tracked and correlated with network performance data to determine whether the source of problems is the network, desktop, server, or application. The combination of software monitoring with NIC-generated data provides a continuous flow of application performance data. This data is immediately available to network administrators, allowing them a cost-effective, highly efficient method of quickly pinpointing problem causes so the correct network management tools can be applied.

The DynamicAccess network performance manager 2.0 offers many tools to obtain a real-time view of the traffic on your network from each endstation that has DynamicAccess LAN agent software installed. This version of the NPM does not collect data from an endstation connected to the LAN using dial-up networking.

DynamicAccess network performance manager 2.0 is composed of DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 and DynamicAccess browser view.

DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0

DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 operates on all 3Com Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet NICs, as well as any Microsoft-certified third party NICs installed on both desktops and servers. The DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 is licensed for unlimited use on all applicable 3Com NICs. For non-3Com NICs, you can purchase a license for the appropriate number of non-3Com supported NICs.

DynamicAccess browser view

You can view the data collected by the NPM using a Java-enabled Web browser, or you can retrieve the data with any SNMP-based network management application such as Transcend Traffix™ Manager or HP OpenView for further correlation and analysis. From anywhere on your network, even remotely, you can securely log in to the NPM to see charts, graphs, and tables of the statistics you need most. You can view alarm settings, capture packet data, view event logs, and view system health information. You can also set up or modify the NPM's current configuration.

DynamicAccess network performance manager 2.0 (NPM) and its browser view files

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation or Server with SP6a; Intel Pentium system with a clock speed of 200 MHz or faster, a minimum of 256 MB RAM; 32 MB available hard disk space for the Workstation; 61 MB available hard disk space for the Server; a maximum of 16 MB resident memory (10 MB for up to 8 subnets and 16 MB for up to 16 subnets) may be allocated per NPM; an additional temporary buffer of 8 MB memory may be allocated during packet capture.

English – U.S. operating system.

Dedicated machine with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 is recommended.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later.

At least one Ethernet connection running TCP/IP or IPX.

SNMP Network Service must be installed.

Although the NPM can be installed on a multiple NIC machine, if there is more than one NIC per segment, only the first NIC on that segment will be used by the NPM.

DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 can be installed on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and NT 4.0 Server, using the appropriate Service Pack listed below:

For installation, a minimum of 25 MB free hard drive space is required.

Microsoft Windows 95: 486/75 MHz processor, 32 MB RAM.

Microsoft Windows 98: Intel Pentium 166 MHz processor, 32 MB RAM.

Windows NT 4.0 (SP6a): Intel Pentium 166 MHz processor, 32 MB RAM.

English – U.S. operating system.

Any Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet NIC with NDIS 3.x or greater driver that is Microsoft WHQL certified, such as 3Com EtherLink® brand NICs.*

*Microsoft WHQL certification insures that the proper driver calls are made to support 3Com software. The list of certified NICs can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/hwtest/hcl/ under the section Network/LAN.

The secure access to various browser view features is available only if the NPM browser view files reside on an NTFS partition.

Please note that if you install IIS 2.0 or Peer Web Services (PWS) 3.0 after having installed NPM 2.0, you must manually configure them to point to the proper directory where the NPM Java applets were installed to open the browser view user interface. If IIS/PWS 4.0 is pre-installed, the browser view user interface is automatically installed in the proper directory so that manual configuration is unnecessary.

Working with the NPM Using a Web BrowserWorking with the NPM Using a Web Browser

You must use a Java-enabled Web browser to view the data collected by the NPM. Due to differences in various browsers' Java Virtual Machine (JVM) implementations, behavior will vary between different vendors' browsers. This version of the NPM works best with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 (or later).

Any RMON-compliant management application can be used for viewing the NPM's RMON data or receiving SNMP traps from the DynamicAccess network performance manager. Applications tested for interoperability with the NPM include: 3Com Transcend Enterprise Manager, Transcend Traffix Manager, Transcend LANsentry Manager, Nortel Networks Optivity, Agilent NetMetrix, and NetScout Systems NetScout Manager.

Chapter 2 - Installing the NPMChapter 2 - Installing the NPM

This chapter describes how to install the DynamicAccess network performance manager (NPM) 2.0 components on your PC. We recommend that you build a fresh system from the ground up. After preparing the server for installing the NPM, you will run the NPM setup procedures which install the NPM software and documentation. Procedures for installing a LAN agent on Windows NT are described in Chapter 3.

NOTENOTE: If you plan to upgrade the operating system or other system component such as NIC drivers on your server, you must do so before installing DynamicAccess software 2.0.

Upgrading from Transcend dRMON Edge Monitor System Upgrading from Transcend dRMON Edge Monitor System 1.11.1 to Dynamic to DynamicAccess Access network performance manager 2.0network performance manager 2.0

If you have the Transcend dRMON Edge Monitor System installed, you must uninstall the software according to the instructions in the User Guide. Although we recommend that you build a fresh system, if you plan to use the same server for the NPM, you will need to upgrade the system. Before upgrading the system, verify that the system has 256 MB of RAM.

Be aware that if your system has an older version of Internet Information Service (IIS) installed (older than IIS 4.0), the DynamicAccess network performance manager 2.0 will install in a directory other than the default directory of this older IIS. You must manually modify and change the path to open the new drmon2.html Web page to view the default screen of the NPM browser view. See Configuring Internet Information Server in this chapter. The new path is:

<Windows Drive>:\Program files\3Com\DynamicAccess software 2.0\Webview

Follow the steps in Installing the NPM Software in this chapter.

Preparing a Server for the DynamicPreparing a Server for the DynamicAccess Access network network performance manager 2.0performance manager 2.0

This section describes how to prepare for installing the DynamicAccess network performance manager on a dedicated server with IIS 4.0. The NPM installs only on a PC running Windows NT 4.0 using Service Pack 6a.

On the PC where you want to install the DynamicAccess network performance manager 2.0, complete the following procedure before installing the application:

1. Install the Windows NT 4.0 server or workstation operating system.

NOTE:NOTE: When installing the OS, avoid installing the version of IIS 2.0 that is included on the NT 4.0 server CD.

2. Install the TCP/IP protocol.

3. Install the SNMP network service.

4. Install SP6a for NT 4.0. This is required before IIS 4.0 from Option Pack 4.0 can be installed. Refer to the Microsoft Web site for the latest version of SP6a:

5. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01. When prompted on installation type, select the Customize your Browser option. Click Next. Make sure that Microsoft Virtual Machine is selected in the list box.

6. Install IIS 4.0 from the Option Pack 4.0 CD by running SETUP.EXE found in the Ntoptpak\En\x86\winnt.srv directory.

If you do not have the Option Pack 4.0 CD you can download and install IIS from:

http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/NT4OptPk/default.asp

7. Reinstall SP6a.

NOTE:NOTE: IIS 4.0 must be installed on your server before installing the DynamicAccess network performance manager 2.0. If, for some reason, you do not follow the steps above and install IIS 2.0 or IIS 3.0 (which is on the Windows NT CD), then you need to manually configure IIS 2.0 or IIS 3.0 to point to NPM's Java applet directory.

Adding or Removing Protocols or ServicesAdding or Removing Protocols or Services

You must reinstall SP6a immediately after adding or removing protocols or services. This must be done before you reboot.

NOTE:NOTE: We recommend that you do not remove the SNMP service once the NPM is installed on your system.

Configuring Internet Information ServerConfiguring Internet Information Server

Follow these steps to configure IIS if you did not install IIS 4.0 on your server before installing the NPM.

1. Select Internet Service Manager from Start, Programs, Windows NT Option Pack, Microsoft Internet Information Server.

2. Open the Microsoft Management Console and expand Internet Information Server. Right-click to select Default Web Site. Choose New, Virtual Directory.

3. When prompted, type an alias of your choice (for example, webview). Click Next.

4. Enter:

C:\Program Files\3Com\DynamicAccess software 2.0\webview\ui

5. Click Next, and then click Finish.

6. Reapply SP6a, and then reboot.

7. Click the IE icon. Type: <IP address or host name of the IIS server/the name of the alias from step 3>/drmon2.html

Microsoft Network Monitor

The DynamicAccess network performance manager and Microsoft Network Monitor are mutually exclusive and cannot be run on the same system.

Installing the NPM SoftwareInstalling the NPM Software

This section describes how to install the DynamicAccess network performance manager software files on the properly prepared server.

1. Insert the product CD in the CD-ROM drive. The Welcome screen appears.

2. Click Install. The Software License Agreement screen appears. You will be prompted to accept the terms of the agreement. If you decline, the software will not install.

3. Click I accept. The Setup Type screen appears.

4. On the Setup Type screen, select LAN agent 2.0 and network performance manager 2.0, and then click Next. The Choose Destination Location screen appears.

5. You can choose not to install DynamicAccess 2.0 software by clicking Cancel to exit Setup. To continue with the installation, click Next after you verify the destination folder. The Web Server Destination screen appears.

6. Click Next.

NOTE:NOTE: At this point in the installation, if the server is not properly prepared, you may see error messages. If you see any error messages, you must correct the situation before you can complete the installation.

If the server has been prepared properly, the Set Password screen appears. To enable security for packet capture and filter capabilities with the NPM, you must set a password to be used by the NPM and the DynamicAccess LAN agent. Record this password in a safe place. You will use this password later for the LAN agent. Additionally, you can set the password for the NPM at a later time using the General tab in the Setup page of the DynamicAccess browser view user interface.

7. When prompted, type and confirm the password.

8. Click Next. You will be prompted to enter the license for the NPM now.

9. Click Yes. The Enter License Information screen appears.

10. Type the NPM license information, and then click Next.

If you typed incorrect license information, or if you chose to leave the dialog box empty, a warning message appears.

1. Click OK.

11. Repeat step 9. If you typed incorrect license information, or if you chose to leave the dialog box empty again, another warning message appears.

12. Click OK. The following dialog box appears:

13. The evaluation copy of the NPM will only work for 45 days, after which the NPM will stop collecting data. Click Yes to continue the installation. You will be prompted if you want to enter the license for the non-3Com NICs you may have.

14. Click Yes. The Enter License Information screen appears.

15. Follow steps 9 and 10 above. After the steps are completed the following dialog box appears:

NOTE:NOTE: The NPM with browser view support requires 256 MB RAM. You will be prompted if your system does not meet this requirement and asked if you wish to continue this installation. If you click No, the installation terminates to allow you to take corrective action. If you click Yes, the installation continues.

Be aware that the NPM may not work properly on less than 256 MB RAM. Depending on the number of LAN agents you are monitoring, you may see slow performance, or the NPM may lose data. In the worst case, the NPM may exhibit aberrant behavior. If you see any of this behavior, we recommend that you upgrade your system to 256 MB RAM.

17. If you have not terminated the installation at this point, the installation continues and drivers are installed. You are prompted to install the DynamicAccess control panel applet.

NNOTEOTE:: If this is your first installation and you click No, and later change your mind, you will not be able to install the DynamicAccess control panel applet separately. You must uninstall the DynamicAccess LAN agent and then reinstall the software to install the DynamicAccess control panel applet.

If you are an administrator and this is your first installation on your administrator machine, you must install the DynamicAccess control panel applet to complete the configuration of the LAN agents for deployment to your endstations using a .INI file. Click Yes. At this point the registry is updated and services are installed. You will be prompted to view the release notes. If you want to review the release notes later you can do so from the product CD. This completes the NPM installation.

You can remove the NPM software using the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel. Previous versions of DynamicAccess software allowed you to remove the software by selecting the DynamicAccess PassThru Driver Transport located in the network control panel and clicking the Remove button. This is no longer recommended, as you will not be able to reinstall the DynamicAccess software without reinstalling the operating system. If you are a network administrator, it is also recommended that you use a Policy editor to restrict user access to the network control panel.

1. In the Control Panel, open the Add/Remove Programs icon.

2. Select 3Com DynamicAccess 2.0 software.

3. Click Add/Remove.

4. Click Next on the Uninstaller screen.

5. Click Yes to confirm uninstall. The drivers are uninstalled at this point.

6. Click OK to confirm the uninstallation process.

7. Click OK when prompted to restart the machine. The uninstaller must reboot to complete the removal process.

8. Click Finish when prompted to reboot the system.

This chapter describes how to install the DynamicAccess LAN agent on a PC running Windows NT. You must have a DynamicAccess LAN agent on the NPM server for the NPM to function properly. If you are an administrator and this is your first installation on your administrator or model target machine, you must install the DynamicAccess control panel applet to complete the configuration of the LAN agents for deployment to your endstations.

This chapter also discusses how to distribute your DynamicAccess LAN agents and settings to the endstations in your network. This administrative and configuration information is not repeated in Chapter 4, “Installing the DynamicAccess LAN agent – Windows 95 and Windows 98.”

NOTE:NOTE: Prior to installing the LAN agent on a Windows NT system, you must verify that the TCP/IP protocol is installed. The DynamicAccess components that provide application performance data cannot be installed unless TCP/IP is present.

Installing the LAN Agent - Windows NTInstalling the LAN Agent - Windows NT

NOTENOTE: If you plan to upgrade the operating system on this PC, you must do so before installing DynamicAccess software 2.0.

Follow these steps to install the DynamicAccess LAN agent:

1. Insert the product CD in the CD-ROM drive. The Welcome screen appears.

2. Click Next. The Setup Type screen appears.

3. Select LAN agent 2.0 and click Install. The Choose Destination Location screen appears.

4. Click Next. At this point, the DynamicAccess LAN agent drivers are being installed.

5. You are prompted to install the DynamicAccess control panel applet. If you are an administrator and this is your first installation on your administrator or model target machine, you must install the DynamicAccess control panel applet to complete the configuration of the LAN agents for deployment to your endstations. Click Yes.

If you want to give access to the DynamicAccess control panel to end users allowing them to configure the DynamicAccess software, click Yes. The default is No.

NNOTEOTE:: If this is your first installation and you click No, and later change your mind, you will not be able to install the DynamicAccess control panel applet separately. You must uninstall the DynamicAccess LAN agent, and then reinstall the software to install the DynamicAccess control panel applet.

The registry is updated and services are installed.

NOTE:NOTE: At this point in the installation, if you are installing the DynamicAccess LAN agent on the NPM server and if the server is not properly prepared, you may see one or more error messages. If you see any of these messages, you must correct the situation before you can complete the installation.

If TCP/IP is not installed on your PC, an information message box appears advising that the installer did not detect the presence of TCP/IP. The installation will terminate at this point. You must install the TCP/IP protocol and restart the installation of DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0.

NNOTEOTE:: Winsock2 is required for using application response time monitoring features of the network performance manager. If the TCP/IP protocol is not present, Winsock2 will not be installed

6. This completes the installation. You will be prompted to view the release notes. Click Finish.

7. Click Finish when prompted to reboot the machine. You need to reboot your PC for the software to be fully functional. Upon rebooting, the software will launch automatically.

8. Reapply SP6a.

Configuring the DynamicConfiguring the DynamicAccessAccess LAN agent LAN agent

Once the LAN agent is installed, you may want to set options in the DynamicAccess LAN agent that are specific to your site. One of these options is to enable secure monitoring such as packet filtering capture or traffic prioritization or other settings controllable in the DynamicAccess control panel.

Setting a Secure Monitoring Password for the DynamicSetting a Secure Monitoring Password for the DynamicAccessAccess LAN agent LAN agent

To enable secure monitoring and packet capture and filter capabilities with the NPM, you must set a password for the DynamicAccess LAN agent, using the SETPASS.EXE utility found in the following directory on the product CD:

Cd_drive:\DASetup\

You will first need to create a file that contains your selected password in encrypted form. You can create this file on your local administrator machine and later copy it to the appropriate server for use by others.

To create an Encrypted Password File:

1. Copy the SETPASS.EXE file to the hard drive of a your computer, for example c:\working.

2. Run SETPASS.EXE in the following manner:

c:\working\SETPASS.EXE -F file.ext password

where

-F indicates that the given password will be encrypted and saved into file.ext.

file.ext name of a file (with or without a full path) in which to store the encrypted password. File name can have any extension, which is optional.

1. Copy the SETPASS.EXE file to the hard drive of a your computer, for example c:\temp.

2. Copy the file.ext you created on your administrator machine to the same directory.

3. Run SETPASS.EXE in the following manner. For example, if SETPASS.EXE is located in the c:\temp directory of the Sam_server system and it is run with the following arguments then this command:

where

-SA indicates that the encrypted password from file.ext will be stored on the PC where the DynamicAccess LAN agent is installed.

You can edit or create a login script that is executed every time users of the DynamicAccess LAN agents log in to the server so that the endstations can get the proper password. The script should include the following call to:

<network_path>\ is where you copied the SETPASS.EXE file to on the network server.

-SA indicates that the encrypted password from file.ext will be stored on the PC where the DynamicAccess LAN agent is installed.

file.ext is the name of a file (with or without a full path) that contains the encrypted password already created in "Setting a Secure MonitoringPassword for the DynamicAccess LAN agent".

NNOTEOTE:: If file.ext is not located in the same directory with SETPASS.EXE, you must specify the complete path for file.ext.

This step transfers the encrypted password to the DynamicAccess LAN agents, when the user logs in to the server and executes the login script.

Saving Settings to an .INI FileSaving Settings to an .INI File

After you have established the Traffic Prioritization and other settings for your site in the DynamicAccess control panel, you can save those settings for the currently selected NIC to a file which has a .INI file format. In the Apply Changes area of the Advanced Settings page, select Save the file To DynamicAccess software .INI. This file is used with DA15CFG.EXE to pass those site-specific settings to the endstations in your network through a login script or if DA15CFG.EXE is run locally.

NOTE:NOTE: Do not edit the .INI file directly to avoid inserting syntax errors that may prevent the file from being used properly.

Installing Other Third Party Networking SoftwareInstalling Other Third Party Networking Software

You may experience problems in cases where DynamicAccess LAN agent is already present and third parting networking software is being installed with its own installation utility rather than with the Network Control Panel. Examples of such networking software include Novell Client 32 and 3Com EtherLink 10/100 Mbps Desktop NIC (3C905C-TX-M) which come with their own installer utilities. 3Com recommends the following two installation options:

Option One

If the product can also be installed using the Network Control Panel, we recommend that you do so and not use the installation utility that was provided with that product.

Option Two

1. Uninstall DynamicAccess 2.0 software.

2. Reboot the system.

The DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 should not be installed on any NT machine that uses SystemSoft CardWizard. You will lose your network connection after rebooting.

Shomiti Packet BlasterShomiti Packet Blaster

For Shomiti Packet Blaster and similar products that operate directly with the NIC, the DynamicAccess LAN agent does not intercept the traffic generated by Shomiti from the source machine and thus, none of the data for this traffic will be recorded.

Intermediate Drivers

The 3Com DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 on Windows NT is based on Microsoft intermediate driver technology. Due to differences in vendors' implementations, certain intermediate drivers may not function properly in combination with others. If you use any intermediate driver technology, we recommend that you test the 3Com DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 with other technology you use at your site before you widely deploy the DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 on your Windows NT systems that have other intermediate drivers installed.

Also note that the 3Com DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 is not compatible with other 3Com DynamicAccess releases, such as those containing advanced server features and LAN encryption software features. Compatibility between these feature sets will be provided in future releases.

NetShow Theater Server 3.0NetShow Theater Server 3.0

If Microsoft NetShow Theater and the DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 are installed on the same computer, prioritization and performance monitoring will not be available. We recommend using Windows Media Technologies (MPEG-4) instead if you want prioritization and application monitoring of media traffic.

RIP Protocol for IPX/SPX ServicesRIP Protocol for IPX/SPX Services

The DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 should not be installed on your Windows NT 4.0 server if you are using Routing Information Protocol (RIP) for IPX/SPX Services with multiple segments.

After you have completed an initial installation of the DynamicAccess LAN agent and have determined and saved the site-specific settings that you need into a .INI file, you can turn to making the DynamicAccess LAN agent available for installation on your endstations. You can

Complete these basic instructions in the following sections to set up your server with the appropriate DynamicAccess LAN agent installation files. Also, review the steps required for the installation of the DynamicAccess LAN agent on the Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT platforms before deploying the agents as described below. You can also inform your user community or assisting team about the steps to install the DynamicAccess LAN agent on the endstations. These steps include running the DynamicAccess LAN agent setup program, the SETPASS.EXE utility, and the DAI5CFG.EXE utility to complete the configuration of the DynamicAccess LAN agent. For your end users’ ease of use, you might consider including SETPASS.EXE utility and the DAI5CFG.EXE utility into a single batch file.

To Prepare the Server:

You can have the setup image reside in a directory on a server, or on a CD in the server’s CD-ROM drive.

NOTE: The path name to the setup image cannot contain any spaces.

For the following example, assume that you have:

Installed the DynamicAccess LAN agent on a target system and have created a configuration .INI file and created the .bin password file.

Server named MY_Server.

Created a shared directory, d:\InstallDir on MY_Server.

1. Verify a directory for the setup image of the DynamicAccess LAN agent, such as d:\InstallDir. This path name cannot contain any spaces.

2. Enable the Access Type permissions on the shared InstallDir to be Read-only and include Everyone.

3. Copy the directories and files from the DynamicAccess 2.0 CD to the d:\InstallDir on MY_Server. The complete structure is required.

4. Copy the configuration .INI file you saved earlier to use with DA15CFG.EXE to the d:\InstallDir on MY_Server.

5. Your batch file (DA20BAT) could consist of the following commands:

6. Click OK when prompted to reboot the machine. You need to reboot for the software to be fully functional. Upon rebooting, the software will launch automatically.

Installing Other Third-Party Networking SoftwareInstalling Other Third-Party Networking Software

You may experience problems in cases where DynamicAccess LAN agent is already present and third party networking software is being installed with its own installation utility rather than with the Network Control Panel. Examples of such networking software include Novell Client 32 and 3Com EtherLink 10/100 Mbps Desktop NIC (3C905C-TX-M) which come with their own installer utilities. 3Com recommends the following two installation options:

Option One

If the product can also be installed using the Network Control Panel, we recommend that you do so and not use the installation utility that was provided with that product.

Option Two

1. Uninstall DynamicAccess 2.0

2. Reboot the system.

3. Install the third-party product.

4. Reboot the system.

5. Reinstall DynamicAccess 2.0.

6. Reboot the system.

Once the DynamicAccess LAN agent is installed, you may want to set options in the LAN agent that are specific to your site. This chapter describes how to configure the NPM to monitor specific segments on the network, and how to set access permissions for filter and capture to ensure that only authorized users have access to the obtained data.

Configuring NPM General Information SegmentsConfiguring NPM General Information Segments

Minimally, you need to configure at least one polling segment definition, using the options in the NPM setup screen.Point your Web browser at the NPM server using its name or IP address to view the initial page. Now you need to configure the NPM server to monitor specific segments on the network so it can poll the DynamicAccess LAN agent to collect data.

NNOTEOTE:: If this is not your initial time configuring the NPM, be aware that other users may also be modifying the settings on these screens. To avoid change conflicts, we recommend you click the browser view’s Refresh Data button frequently.

1. To configure the NPM server, click the Setup icon from the navigation bar.

2. Select the General tab.

3. To enable security over packet capture and filter capabilities with the NPM, a password is used by the NPM and the DynamicAccess LAN agent. This password must be the same one you used to configure the DynamicAccess LAN agent with the SETPASS.EXE utility. If you did not enter a password during the installation of the NPM and DynamicAccess LAN agent software, you can set the password now. Type and confirm the password. Click Apply.

4. Leave the Enable Local LAN Agent Polling box deselected, unless you want to collect monitoring data from this local agent.

The NPM has a local DynamicAccess LAN agent and normally you would not want or need to collect monitoring data from this agent. If you select this option to collect monitoring data from this local agent, the NPM will see and process poll responses from the local agent and the NPM’s database will eventually become filled with meaningless host matrix information. This extra processing will reduce the performance of the NPM server and also populate the address map table with meaningless entries which, in some cases, will obscure some of the data being collected from the other LAN agents. 3Com recommends, therefore, that you do not activate this option.

If you need or want to see monitoring results for traffic on the NPM’s own LAN segment from the perspective of the NPM server, check this option. 3Com recommends that you either deactivate polling on all segment other than the NPM’s local segment or that you do a Warm Reset of the NPM to purge the NPM database of any meaningless host matrix data that was collected while this feature was enabled when you are done collecting data from the NPM’s local LAN agent. 3Com advises that you deselect this option when you no longer need to track this data.

Configuring NPM SegmentsConfiguring NPM Segments

This section describes how to configure the NPM to monitor specific segments on the network.

1. In the Segment tab, click Add to specify a segment for the NPM.

2. Enter the segment information. The segment configuration screen for adding a new subnet or for editing the configuration of a subnet varies according to the protocol selected. The default is IP. The other panels display subnet ID, subnet mask, and the polling type and rate. For example, you could create an IP-based poll segment using subnet ID 177.85.145.0 and a mask of 255.255.252.0.

NOTE: NOTE: If you select Directed Multicast and the NPM server has more than one NIC installed, the segment will be monitored using IP multicast only if it can be reached from the first NIC of the NPM machine. You will then have the option to go ahead with the selection, or cancel it and change the segment configuration.

3. Select the LAN Agent Licensing tab. The LAN agent is supplied free of charge with 3Com NICs, or from this CD or the 3Com Web site. However, you need a license to use the LAN agent on non-3Com NICs. You can purchase the license by contacting your VAR or through your local 3Com account representative. To find a 3Com office listing please go to http://www.3com.com/global/world/ or call 1-800-NET-3Com.. Enter the license number and click Apply. Current licenses and the number of NICs covered by each license will be displayed in the panel below.

4. Enter the LAN Agent license number and click Apply. Current licenses and the number of NICs covered by each license will be displayed in the Current Licenses box.

5. Select the NPM Licensing tab.

6. Enter the NPM license and click Apply. You must have a license for the NMP to collect data. Please be aware that the evaluation copy will only work for 45 days, after which the NPM stops collecting data. You can obtain a license for the NPM by contacting your normal VAR or through your local 3Com account representative. Setting Access Permissions for Filter and CaptureSetting Access Permissions for Filter and Capture

If you installed the NPM on an NTFS partition, you can ensure that only authorized users have access to the data obtained by filter and capture by setting access restrictions on the appropriate directories. If the computer participates in a domain, you can also add user accounts and global groups from that domain and from trusted domains. You must have administrative privileges to set access restrictions. You can add user accounts from the local computer by completing the following basic procedure. For details, refer to the online help for Windows NT.

1. From User Manager, create a new Local Group.

2. In Group Name, type a name for the new group, such as NPM Admins.

3. In Description, type a description of the new group, such as Can filter and capture data.

4. Click Add to add members to the local group, and then complete the Add Users and Groups dialog box.

Next find the directories under the NPM IIS root that you want to restrict. For example, $install directory$/ui/Capture.

1. In the Windows Explorer, right-click on the directory name and click Sharing.

5. Select Shared As.

6. Click Permissions to open the Access through Share Permissions dialog box.

7. Click Add, and in the Add Users or Groups dialog, select the group you created, such as NPM Admins. If you do not see the group, you may need to select a different domain or machine from the List Names From field.

8. Click Add and select the Type of Access.

9. Click OK until you complete the access permissions.

Now, when the NPM’s browser view is accessed, only those users in the specified group, such as NPM Admins, can set and use the Capture screen features.

Some of the following observations were made during product testing.

If Microsoft NetShow Theater and the DynamicAccess LAN agent 2.0 are installed on the same computer, prioritization and performance monitoring will not be available. We recommend using Windows Media Technologies (MPEG-4) instead if you want prioritization and application monitoring of media traffic.

SSYMPTOMYMPTOM:: You have installed DynamicAccess 2.0, and you are now installing IIS 2.0 or IIS 3.0 and the installation will not complete.

Obtaining an Accurate NIC CountObtaining an Accurate NIC Count

If you have removed the DynamicAccess LAN agent from some of your non-3Com NICs, or you removed some of the endstations from the segment being monitored, you must perform a warm reboot of the NPM to obtain the latest and most accurate count of 3Com and non-3Com NICs. (Click the Setup icon on the navigation bar of the NPM, select the General tab, in the NPM Reset area of the screen, select Warm Reset, and then click Apply).

Upgrading NIC DriversUpgrading NIC Drivers

If you are planning on upgrading your NIC drivers on your Windows NT and Windows 95 or 98 systems, and you have already installed the DynamicAccess LAN agent, we recommend that you remove the DynamicAccess LAN agent before the update. Reinstall the DynamicAccess LAN agent after the update Because not doing so may result in losing network connectivity.

We do not recommend you update the NPM server system after installation of the NPM is complete. If you find a need to update the NIC driver in the NPM, you must remove the complete application and reinstall it after you have upgraded the driver.

Enabling COS with NetBIOSEnabling COS with NetBIOS

PPROBLEMROBLEM:: You have enabled COS with NetBIOS and have lost your network connection.
