STEP 2: The ladder should be installed underneath the escape window of the 5th wheel. The preferred location is for the platform to be centered underneath the window. However, The MOR/safe Escape Ladder frame mount MUST be mounted into the main upper deck tube structure (usually 2” x 6”) using the four toggle nuts and bolts provided in the installation hardware kit. It’s important to properly locate the main upper deck tubes underneath the exterior skin of the 5th wheel for installation of the ladder frame mount. This may position the ladder so that it it is offset from the center of the window. The picture and drawing below are representative of the steel structural frame in the upper deck of a 5th wheel*(Fig. 1 and 2). It’s common for manufacturers to add smaller support tubes next to the main tube structure and also to cover the tubes with a thin gage steel cover plate. The smaller tube structure, (usually 1” x 1”) and thin gage cover plates will not provide adequate support for the ladder frame mount primary toggle nuts and bolts. The smaller tubes are adequate for the Tek screws that are used as secondary mounts to help secure the ladder frame mount to the upper deck of the 5th wheel. Figure 3 shows a proper location for the toggle nut and bolt used to secure the ladder to the ladder frame mount. In order to reveal the location of the cross members, it is recommended that a section of the exterior skin of the 5th wheel is removed. The next step (Step 3) may be skipped only if the exact location of the cross members is known.

* The smaller support tubes or steel plate referenced in this picture may be in a different location and/or in some cases may not exist on your 5th wheel. What is most important is that the MOR/safe Escape Ladder Frame Mount is installed into the main upper deck tube structure (usually 2” x 6” tube) using the 4 toggle nuts and bolts provided in your installation hardware kit, one in each corner as detailed in the steps that follow.

STEP 3:The exterior skin of a 5th wheel is commonly held in place with weather stripping and screw strips that are located at the front near the pin box and along the sides of the unit. If the pin box has a cover or shroud, remove the cover (see Fig. 4). Remove any weather stripping to expose the screw strips and remove the screws (see Fig. 5- Fig. 10). Pull back the screw strips, allowing the skin of the 5th wheel to sag down a bit so that the structure inside is visible (see Fig. 11). Please locate the main upper deck tube.

Measure the distance between the mounting points and ensure that the points will match up with a set of pre-existing holes on the ladder frame mount. If the measurements do not match up, either adjust your mounting location slightly or add mounting holes in the frame (see Fig. 12 and 13).

It is important that the ladder frame mount is installed on a level surface of the skin of the 5th wheel. It should not interfere with the curvature of the 5th wheel. Measure to ensure that the first mounting location is beyond the curve of the unit (see Fig. 14 - Fig. 15).

In some circumstances, the main upperdeck tube is covered up by a steel plate, making it difficult to determine the exact location of the tube. The plate is also covering up a smaller support tube. This tube can be felt by reaching around the plate. Measure the width of one of the visible support tubes (the tube covered by the steel plate will be the same width). Measure over this distance on the cover plate to determine where the edge of the structural frame member begins. The same process may need to be repeated on the other side of the 5th wheel to determine the location of the structural frame member there.

STEP 4: Once the mounting locations are marked on the undercarriage, use a 1” hole saw or large step bit to drill through the exterior surface and main upper deck tube (see Fig. 19). Use caution when drilling into tubing as there may be wiring or cables routed through the tube. The thickness of the structure you have drilled through must be sufficient to support the fire escape ladder (at least .105” thick). Be sure that the entire area on the skin of the 5th wheel where the fire escape ladder will be mounted is clear of any obstructions (see Fig. 20).

Fig. 19

Fig. 18

Fig. 20

NOTE: At this point, it is important to check the length of the bolts as compared to the size of the main upper deck tube to which the ladder will be secured. If the bolts are too long for the anchor nut to have room to fully expand, the bolts may need to be trimmed down.

Fig. 17Fig. 16

Once the main upper deck tube is identified, make a mark on the skin of the 5th wheel which notes the location of the main upper deck tubes. It is important the exact location is marked in order to ensure the ladder frame mount is installed directly to the main upper deck tubes.

WARNING: THIS PRODUCT IS DESIGNED TO BE MOUNTED TO THE STEEL STRUCTURE OF THE 5TH WHEEL AS DESCRIBED ON FOLLOWING PAGE. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN BODILY INJURY FOR THE USER. MOR/RYDE INTERNATIONAL, INC. IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR IMPROPER INSTALLATION.

STEP 5: CAUTION: This step will require two people to lift and secure the ladder frame mount. MOR/ryde International, Inc. is not responsible for property damage and/or personal injury.

Place the ladder frame mount up into location on the upper deck (as shown below). It may be necessary to use supports to hold them in place (see Fig.21 and Fig. 22). Align the holes in the ladder frame mount with the new holes just drilled in the 5th wheel. Determine how the frame will be sitting. If it is going to rest on the weather stripping or molding on the sides, please use the extra plastic spacer washers provided so that the entire ladder frame mount remains level. Use as many plastic spacer washers as necessary.

IMPORTANT: Please re-install the weather stripping, molding, and screw strips back up on the sides of the 5th wheel. The ladder frame mount may rest on some of these pieces and you will not be able to put them back up once the ladder is installed.

STEP 6: Raise the ladder to the undercarriage (see Fig. 25) and insert the anchor bolts one at a time (see Fig. 26). The anchors should run parallel with the length of the tube so that when the bolt is turned the nut will be held in place by the sides of the tube. Be sure the anchor nut does not pinch any wires or cables that may be in the tube. It is helpful to apply some light downward pressure as you tighten the bolts to prevent the anchors from turning. Do not tighten one corner completely before proceeding to the next. Rather, loosely screw in one corner, then the next. Repeat until all corners are snug, then fasten tightly (see Fig. 27). DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!

NOTE: If the anchor nut does not disengage on its own, a longer bolt may need to be used.

STEP 7: Add Tek screws in several places to secure the frame to the 5th wheel, catching as many additional support tubes as possible (see Fig. 28). If the predrilled holes in the ladder frame mount do not match up with the markings for the crossmembers, new holes may need to be drilled in the ladder frame mount to match additional structural locations.

STEP 8: Insert the ladder & platform from the fire escape window side of the unit, platform first (see Fig. 29). Once the platform is inserted into the frame mount, tighten the ladder stops with 1/4”-20 carriage bolts and nylock nuts that are provided (see Fig. 30). The ladder is now installed, but the front of the ladder must be locked for safe travel (see Fig. 31 on following page and Owner’s Manual).

PREPARING LADDER FOR USE: Pull the ladder and platform out and lock it in the out position (see Fig. 32). The feet of the ladder should be resting on level ground when the 5th wheel’s landing gear are deployed and the unit is level.

PREPARING LADDER FOR TRANSPORT: Stow the ladder and platform and lock it in place (see Fig. 31). Hook-up the tow vehicle to the 5th wheel and lower the 5th wheel down from the landing gear. Check for proper clearance between the truck bed rails and the ladder frame mount. There should be a minimum of 5” of clearance between the bottom of the ladder frame mount and the top of the truck bed side rails when on level ground.
