Both LP and natural gas have an odorant added to aid in detecting a gas leak. Some people may not physically be able to smell or recognize this odorant. If you are unsure orunfamiliar with the smell of LP or natural gas, ask the gas supplier. Other conditions, suchas “odorant fade”, which causes the odorant to diminish in intensity, can also hide orcamouflage a gas leak.
DANGER!NATURAL GAS AND LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM MODELS!
● Water heaters utilizing LP gas aredifferent from natural gas models. Anatural gas water heater will not functionsafely on LP gas and vice versa.
● No attempt should ever be made toconvert the water heater from naturalgas to LP gas. To avoid possibleequipment damage, personal injury orfire, do not connect the water heater to afuel type not in accordance with the unitdata plate; propane for propane unitsand natural gas for natural gas units. These units are not certified for anyother fuel type.
● LP appliances should not be installedbelow grade (for example, in a basement)if such installation is prohibited byfederal, state and/or local laws, rules, regulations or customs.
● Propane or LP gas must be used withgreat caution. It is heavier than air andwill collect first in lower areas making ithard to detect at nose level.
● Before attempting to light the waterheater, make sure to look and smell forgas leaks. Use a soapy solution to checkall gas fittings and connections. Bubblingat a connection indicates a leak that mustbe corrected. When smelling to detect agas leak, be sure to sniff near the flooralso.
● Gas detectors are recommended in LPand natural gas applications and theirinstallation should be in accordance withthe detector manufacturer’srecommendations and/or local laws, rules, regulations or customs.
● It is recommended that more than onemethod, such as soapy solution, gasdetectors, etc., be used to detect leaks ingas applications.
Notice: If a gas leak is present or suspected:
● Do not attempt to find the cause yourself.
● Do not try to light any appliance.
● Do not touch any electrical switch.
● Do not use any phone in your building.
● Leave the house immediately and makesure your family and pets leave also.
● Leave the doors open for ventilation andcontact the gas supplier, a qualifiedservice agency or the fire department.
● Stay away from the house (or building)until the service call has been made, theleak is corrected and a qualified agencyhas determined the area to be safe.

Installing the water heater.Proper operation of the water heater requires air for combustion and ventilation. Provisions forcombustion and ventilation air must comply with referenced codes and standards.
Combustion and Ventilation AirNOTICE: If the water heater is installed inan unconfined space within a building ofconventional frame, masonry or metalconstruction, infiltration air is normallyadequate for proper combustion andventilation. If the water heater is installed ina confined space, provisions for combustionand ventilation air must be made.
A confined space is one having a volumeof less than 50 cubic feet per 1000 Btuh ofthe aggregate input of all applianceswithin that space.
The air must be supplied through twopermanent openings of equal area. One is to be located within 12” above the floorand the other is to be located within 12”below the ceiling.
The minimum net free area of each openingmust not be less than one square inch per1000 Btuh of the total input rating of allthe appliances in the enclosure (but notless than 100 square inches), if eachopening communicates with otherunconfined areas inside the building.
Buildings of unusually tight constructionshall have the combustion and ventilationair supplied from outdoors, or a freelyventilated attic or crawl space.
If air is supplied from outdoors, directly orthrough vertical ducts, there must be twoopenings located as specified above andeach must have a minimum net free areaof not less than one square inch per 4000Btuh of the total input rating of all theappliances in the enclosure.
If horizontal ducts are used tocommunicate with the outdoors, eachopening must have a minimum net freearea of not less than one square inch per2000 Btuh of the total input rating of allthe appliances in the enclosure. If ductsare used, the minimum dimensions ofrectangular air ducts shall not be less than3”.
NOTICE: If the duct openings which supplycombustion and ventilation air are to becovered with a protective screen or grill, thenet free area (openings in the material) ofthe covering material must be used indetermining the size of the openings.Protective screening for the openings MUSTNOT be smaller than 1/4”mesh to preventclogging by lint or other debris.
Corrosive AtmospheresThe air in beauty shops, dry cleaningestablishments, photo processing labs, and storage areas for liquid and powderedbleaches or swimming pool chemicalsoften contain such halogenatedhydrocarbons.
An air supply containing halogenatedhydrocarbons may be safe to breathe, but when it passes through a gas flamecorrosive elements are released that will shorten the life of any gas burningappliance.
Propellants from common spray cans orgas leaks from A/C and refrigerationequipment are highly corrosive afterpassing through a flame.
The water heater warranty is voided whenfailure of the heater is due to operation ina corrosive atmosphere.
NOTICE: The water heatershould not be installed nearan air supply containinghalogenated hydrocarbons.

To ensure proper operation of the waterheater, the following water pressureguidelines should be followed:
● Operation of the water heater requiresthe minimum water pressure of 14 psiand a minimum water flow rate of0.66 gpm.
● Additional water pressure is requiredfor long pipe runs and outlet fitting(s)water pressure drops.
● To maintain proper performance, ensuresufficient water supply pressure. TheRequired Water Pressure = Min.Operating Water Pressure (14 psi) +Pipe Pressure Loss + Faucet andShower Pressure Loss + Safety Margin(more than 5 psi).
● To supply hot water to upper floors, additional water pressure (0.44 psi/ft)must be ensured. The measurementshould be calculated by the distancebetween the water inlet of the waterheater (ground level) to the hot waterfaucet (upper floor level).
● Well water systems should be set at arange of 50-60 psi.
● When the water is supplied from awater supply tank, the height of thetank and the diameter of the pipes andtheir relation to water pressure, shouldbe taken into consideration. Gravitywater pressure is not recommended.
Notice: If the water flow resistance of ashower head is too high, the burner in thewater heater will fail to ignite. Keep theshower head clean from debris that couldcause additional pressure drop.
Notice: If using mixing valves on theoutlet, choose one which prevents coldwater pressure from overcoming hot waterline pressure.
CAUTION: This waterheater must only be usedwith the following watersupply system conditions:
● With clean, potable waterfree of corrosivechemicals, sand, dirt, orother contaminates.
● With inlet watertemperatures above 32°F,but not exceeding 120°F.

Installing the water heater. The water heater must be installed with a vent adapter such as 9401RHM or FSAA4 or a UL approvedCategory III Stainless Steel equivalent.
VentingThe installation of venting must complywith national codes, local codes, and thevent manufacturer’s instructions
The water heater must be vented to theoutdoors as described in these instructions.DO NOT connect this water heater to anexisting Vent or Chimney, it must bevented separately from all otherappliances.
All vent components (adapters, pipe, elbows, terminals, etc.) should be UL1738Certified Stainless Steel Venting Material(e.g. AL29-4C).
The specified vent termination must beused. The termination should be a 90°elbow type with screen. (Refer to page 15)
Use a vent pipe with an anti-disconnectionstructure.
The use of a High Temperature Silicone(500°F) may be required to seal ventconnections. To prevent accidental gasexhaust leakage, apply a 1/4” wide beadapproximately 1/4” from the end andanother bead against the joint side of thestop bead.
Follow vent manufacturer’s installationinstructions.
The unit can be vented either horizontallyor vertically.
Vent pipe runs must be adequatelysupported along both horizontal andvertical runs.
The maximum recommended unsupportedspan should be no more than five (5) feet.Support isolation hanging bands should beused. DO NOT use wire. (See diagrambelow).
DANGER: Failure toinstall the vent adapter andproperly vent the waterheater to the outdoors asoutlined in the Ventingsection of this manual willresult in unsafe operation ofthe water heater causingdeath, serious injury, explosion, or fire. To avoidthe risk of fire, explosion,or asphyxiation fromcarbon monoxide, NEVERoperate the water heaterunless it is properly ventedand has adequate air supplyfor proper operation asoutlined in the Ventingsection of this manual.

Venting LengthsMAXIMUM VENT LENGTH - Thesystem will not operate if there isexcessive restriction (pressure drop) in theventing system. A maximum of 47 feet 6inches of vent pipe may be used providedthere is only one 90° elbow in the system. If additional elbows are required: twoelbows can be used with 42 feet 6 inches, and three elbows can be used with 37 feet6 inches of vent pipe.
A 90° elbow is equivalent to 5 feet tostraight pipe. A 45° elbow is equivalent to2 feet 6 inches of straight pipe.
The termination elbow does not count asan elbow when determining total ventlengths.
The vent can be installed with a slightdownward slope of 1/4” per foot ofhorizontal run toward the vent terminal(see diagram below). This ensures thatany condensate formed during operationof the unit is evacuated from theappliance.
A 1/4” per foot upward slope is acceptablewhen it is not possible to vent with adownward slope, however, a UL approvedCategory III Stainless Steel condensatetrap MUST be installed at the beginningof the horizontal run (See page 15“Typical Horizontal Termination w/ 1/4” per foot UPWARD Slope” or page 16, “Standard Vertical VentTermination” for examples).
MINIMUM VENT LENGTH - Theventing may be as short as 12”, providedone vent termination is installed to theoutdoors through a sidewall, one 90°elbow is included in the installation, andthe wall thimble is installed.
Notice: Make sure that the seam of thevent pipe in horizontal runs is toward thetop of the installation (see illustration tothe far left).

Vent Horizontal Wall Thimble Installation
An approved 4 inch Vent Horizontal WallThimble (Round Type) must be used.
The Wall Thimble requires mechanicalsupport from the wall sufficient to supportany incidental loads on the system. If thewall is not sufficient enough to support theWall Thimble, then appropriate additionalframing and/or blocking is required.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:Prepare an opening for the Wall Thimblein the wall. The opening must be 6-1/2inches in diameter for a 4 inch ventsystem. The opening should be round.
If there are not sufficient support membersto secure the Wall Thimble or if there is asemirigid foam insulation layer under thesheathing, appropriate fasteners must beused to secure the Wall Thimble to thesupport members.
The Wall Thimble is designed to adapt toany wall thickness from 3-1/2” to 6” thick. If the wall is thicker than 6” the WallThimble may be extended using a piece of6” diameter snaplock or welded seamgalvanized pipe up to 6” long.
Select the larger diameter half of the WallThimble for the outside of the wall.
● Apply a continuous bead of highquality silicone or silicone/latex caulkon the inside of the outer flange. Thiswill be the only weather seal to keepmoisture outside the building. Ensure asufficient seal is made.
● Position this portion of the WallThimble into the prepared hole from theoutside. Secure the assembly into theprepared opening using fasteners asindicated by sheathing or structuralmembers, sealing the screw heads withmore caulking.
Use 4 hollow wall anchors, at least 1/8”in diameter and of appropriate length forthe thickness of the sheathing, ifsheathing is particle board or othercomposite material. Use 4 #10x1-1/4”wood screws for plywood, solid woodsheathing or members. Use suitablemasonry anchors when passing throughsolid masonry walls. Reinstall thedecorative sheathing around the WallThimble. This assembly may be paintedto match the exterior decor.
● Attach a screened 4 inch terminationfitting to the female end of a ventsection or slip connector. Use themethod described in the Ventinginstallation instructions (page 12). Slidethe vent in through the outside of theThimble and seal the annular spacewith a thick bead of caulk.
● Slide the interior portion of the Thimbleinto the inside hole. Be certain theinterior and exterior Thimble halvesoverlap at least 1”. If insufficientoverlap exists, extend the interiorportion with single wall galvanizedpipe.
