Lab Objective In this lab, we'll provide complete information to Create and configure Windows Server 2016

Nano Server also we'll add, configure and test DNS and file server on Nano Server.

Windows Nano Server 2016 overview 1. Is similar to Windows Server in Server Core mode.

2. Smaller hardware footprint also smaller than server core.

3. Completely managed remotely

4. Nano Server is not available for selection through the Windows Server 2016 setup

wizard

5. GUI, Command line and PowerShell not available.

Current infrastructure environment - Active Directory: ITProLearn.com

- IP address: 172.16.0.95

- DNS Server: 172.16.0.95

- Hyper-V Server: 172.16.0.95

- DHCP Server: 172.16.0.30

Create Nano Server In this lab, we will create Nano Server image using Nano Server Image Builder tool

Step 1: Download and install Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK)

Step 3: Create Windows Nano Server 2016 VHD image file format - first mount Windows Server 2016 ISO image that will use in installation process

- From this wizard you can create a new Nano VHD image or create bootable USB from existing image.

In our scenario we will use first option to create a new Nano VHD image.

- Select the mounted Windows Server 2016 ISO

- here is available Nano server editions and roles that Nano Server can play, in our scenario we will

select standard edition and roles that server will play (DNS & File Server)

- Add Nano server computer name, administrator password and select your time zone. Then join Nano

Server to our ITPROLEARN.COM domain.

- enable WinRM so you can manage Nano Server remotely and allow DHCP

- All configuration that you select converted to PowerShell and Nano Server creation started.

- Nano Server is created, browse saved location files.

Step 4: Connect to the created Nano Server VHD through Hyper-V console From Hyper-V create new Virtual Machine using our Nano server virtual hard disk that we just create. As

explained in the below figures.

Connect our VM to the LAN network through virtual NIC that we created in Hyper-V installation process. The

select existing Nano Server hard disk.

Creation started

After creation is done start your VM and connect.

Very simple console to configure some basic configuration like IP addresses and firewall, there is no command

line or PowerShell, login using your created credential.

Here is the configuration that you apply through Nano server creation process.

We'll connect and manage Nano server remotely through IP address 172.16.0.113 which obtained automatically

through DHCP server.

Manage Windows Nano Server 2016 (locally)

Add static IP address Select Networking

From this screen, Press F11

from this screen press F4 to disable DHCP and type static IP

Allow ICMP (Ping)

Manage Windows Nano Server 2016 (Remotely) We can manage Nano server remotely from Server Manager, PowerShell and RSAT (Windows Client), in our

scenario we will connect to Nano server remotely from our ITPROLEARN.COM using PowerShell and Server

Manager.

First login to our DC using administrator account then access Server Manager and add Nano Server in Server

manager console so we can manage the Nano Server remotely.

Check Nano server installed roles Select Nano Sever to check installed roles from the down menu, in our case Nano server has file and storage role.

Access file and storage services from server manager console to browse which server has this role, you will

notice that Nano Server has this role.

Manage Nano server remotely through PowerShell Right click on our server to access some admin tasks as explained in the figures below

From the list select PowerShell (any command run here will executed in Nano Server)

Add file server role service From server manager add Role and Features as explained in the figures below

Connect to DNS on Nano Server and add DNS secondary zone from ITPROLEARN.COM DNS

Browse to select ITPROEAR.COM DNS server

Add the Master DNS server (Primary Server) so this server will replicate DNS zones from the master server.

Now allow zone transfer from master DNS to secondary DNS (Nano server)
