fall frolicMake the most of the too few days before winter with our simple recipe for a fun afternoon.

This autumn why not explore someplace new? Scout interesting, lesser-known options online through traillink.com or the National Park Service’s Website at nps.gov. To search local goings-on by zip code, type yours into the ZipGuides feature at enature.com, a cool interactive site that’s affiliated with the National Wildlife Federation.

Travel tipsn Getting from point A to point B as quickly

as humanly possible is for the weekdays. Before you set out, mentally shift gears and leave plenty of breathing room to roam, explore and meander.

what to bring n Food and drinks.n A big, thick blanket to spread out

on the ground.n A small basket or tote for each child

to stash finds. n Nature guidebooks (think trees, birds)

and binoculars.n A blank notebook and pencil.

what to leave homen iPods, BlackBerrys and cell phones—

no tech distractions allowed today!

Get the kids involved n Wonder out loud about what you see

and encourage kids to do the same. Try: What’s strange about that rock? Or, why is that leaf a different color?

n Follow small animal tracks and see where they take you.

n Research which local flowers bloom only at this time of year.

n Study birds. Are they solo, in small groups or big flocks? Who can mimic their call?

exercising with a stability ball adds a dose of fun while targeting the entire body. Because every move requires the use of muscles in the lower abdominal and back regions, using a ball helps you burn more calories as you improve strength, posture and agility. It’s as though you’re getting a core workout with every move.

Ball BasiCsto get the maximum benefit from your ball workout, follow these helpful tips.

• Your ball is the proper size for your height and leg length if your hips, knees and feet form a 90-degree angle when you sit on it.

• Inflate your ball with the small hand pump that typically comes with it, or try an air hose at a gas station, which is quicker and easier.

• If at first you’re unsteady on the ball, let out a little air to make balancing a bit easier.

TaRGeTs CHesT, BaCK anD aRMs Lie facedown over the ball. • Roll forward until your knees are on top of it, with your arms at a 90-degree angle to your body so that they are supporting you in a push-up position. • Your arms should not be locked, and your hands should be directly under your shoulders. • Slowly lower your chest and head to the ground. • Repeat up to 8 times.

FOR a BiGGeR CHallenGeRest your toes, not your knees, on the ball to add more body weight to the push-up.

Veggies.

But that can be your little secret. Flat Earth™ crisps have a 1/2 serving of real veggies baked into every ounce. And best of all, they’re flat-out tasty.
