On a recent Thursday afternoon, Presby’s Inspired Life, along with

State Representative Joanna McClinton, Philadelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and other local officials, celebrated with residents as Witherspoon Senior Apartments, an adaptive reuse of a former nursing home, officially opened its doors.

The new community offers 60 units of Affordable Housing to those age 62 and better. Most of these new residents waited in line overnight for an application. Almost all of Presby’s Affordable Housing communities boast wait lists twice or triple the number of units available.

“Finding safe, affordable housing is an ongoing issue for so many Philadelphians — especially the senior population who want to stay in the neighborhoods where they were raised,” said Judee M. Bavaria, President & CEO of Presby’s Inspired Life.

We give from the heart, and we serve from the heart.

The hallmark of Presby’s Inspired Life is not simply the exceptional services we provide, but the exceptional way in which we provide them. As I visit our communities, I witness the joy, the love and the genuine care for others that exists among team members, residents and family members.

That familial bond creates an environment that supports growth, invites innovation and cares

through change and transition. It is this environment that sets

Presby apart from the rest .

As we celebrate 2018 and set our sights on another year, we at Presby’s

Inspired Life are excited to work toward preserving the

exceptional qualities that make our communities and our services

unique. Whether you live, work or volunteer at our communities, we hope you

know how grateful we are for who you are and what you bring to make them shine bright.

Always remember: Together, we shine!

N yhema Thomas doesn’t have to look at a chart or spreadsheet. She knows the name and room number of each of the 100+ Grace

Court residents by heart, whether they’re brand-new or have lived there for years. “At every Presby community I’ve worked at, I’ve made time to chit-chat with the residents, to see how they’re doing and just keep an eye on them,” Nyhema said. “I get to see the residents sometimes more often than families do.”

Until her recent promotion to Associate Director at Presby’s 58th Street Campus, Nyhema was the Senior Housing Manager at Grace Court in Yeadon, Delaware County. Grace Court features 100 units of Affordable Housing for those 62 and better.

Nyhema’s professional journey began 15 years ago, when she started at the now-closed 58th Street Nursing Home. (Witherspoon Senior Apartments, a new Presby Affordable Housing community, is now open on this site.)

From there, Nyhema moved into Presby’s Affordable Housing ministry, working her way through various assignments before arriving at Grace Court. It became clear that Affordable Housing was her calling. Still, each move brought transitional challenges and opportunities.

“One of the great things about Presby is that each community is totally unique,” Nyhema said. “I came from a full-scale nursing community to Los Jardines, which is much smaller and predominately Spanish-speaking. I put in the hard work to learn Spanish from the residents so

I could communicate with them. Moving to Grace Court was also a challenge because it was so much bigger.”

Challenge met — no surprise, since Nyhema has been known for her helping spirit throughout her Presby tenure — and it shows in her relationships with residents. They know that her door is always open if they need anything.

“I’m passionate about the service I provide,” said Nyhema. “It ties into my personal ministry of taking care of those who may need assistance in taking care of what’s important to them. The administrative work is just one piece of the puzzle,” she continued. “Nothing compares to daily interactions with the residents.”

During her time at Grace Court, Nyhema was at the helm of numerous programs. She’s particularly proud of the meal program offered in conjunction with the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging, as well as the educational programs. “Different agencies come in and provide educational sessions,” Nyhema explained. “So many different services are offered now, it can be tough to keep up with them all. From Medicare to nutrition, I like that we bring residents that knowledge.”

Nyhema is not one to rest on her laurels. She has more that she wants to accomplish in her new role at Presby’s 58th Street Campus, which features four Affordable Housing communities serving more than 300 residents. “The entire Presby team is working together to make sure that every community is the best it can be, now and into the future,” she said.

Associate Director Nyhema Thomas (pictured sixth from left) has made an impact on numerous communities and residents during her 15 years with Presby.

P resby’s Inspired Life held its Glorious Gardens Second Épisode and Renaissance at Rydal celebrations in the fall to commemorate new and

stones and a new pergola, among other features, to the already lush grounds of the Rosemont estate.

“Many generous donors contributed to that initial phase, and we feel especially fortunate to have that same type of support in this Second Épisode of the Glorious Gardens project here at Rosemont,” said Rosemont Executive Director Marina Hacking.

Rosemont residents Amy Williams and Barbara Terplan, the co-chairs of the Glorious Gardens Second Épisode Campaign, were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition. “We could not have reached this juncture of the project without the leadership and dedication of Barbara and Amy,” said Presby’s Inspired Life Director of Annual Giving Page Zettlemoyer.

Rydal Park The Renaissance at Rydal Campaign has been a year-long initiative supported by members of the campaign’s Leadership Circle and Rydal Park residents Mona Ballard, Richard Drach, Joan Gotwals, Lorraine Pruitt and Bill Schwarzschild.

The “renaissance” will add decorative benches, a walking loop along the Medical Center and bridges to connect each of the buildings on the campus, in addition to a stream bed restoration project.

“Our shared vision for the Renaissance at Rydal Campaign has been to pave the way for more attractive, inviting outdoor venues for your optimal enjoyment and wellness,” said Vice President of Philanthropy and Mission Support Lynn Marie Johnson-Porter.

The fundraising goal for the campaign is $600,000. A total of $487,000 in gifts and pledges has been secured. Work is beginning now on the outdoor features and will continue into 2019, with expected completion by the spring.

For more information on the Renaissance at Rydal Campaign and on how to donate, please contact Lynn Marie Johnson-Porter at 610-260-1153 or [email protected].

Presby team members honored for career milestones during annual Service Awards Dinner

“It is truly my honor to be with you, our beloved team members, and to personally thank you and your families for such wonderful service to our ministry,” said Presby President and CEO Judee M. Bavaria. “As I travel across all our communities, our residents invariably remind me of just how committed and special our team is — and I wholeheartedly agree. It is this type of loyalty that is the hallmark of Presby’s Inspired Life.”

“You exemplify compassionate care, not simply because of the length of your tenure, but because of the immeasurable dedication you deliver each day. You are exceptional!”

— Judee M. Bavaria

Team members from all across Presby’s Inspired Life gathered together on Thursday, October 11, in

Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, for the annual Service Awards Dinner.

Presby holds this event each year to honor team members who have reached yearly milestones in their service to the organization.

This year, 82 team members, who collectively represent a total of 860 years of service, were recognized for the gifts and talents they bring to Presby each day. The milestones this year ranged from five years of service to 40 (an achievement reached by Richard Crotinger of Rydal Park).

Rosemont’s Steve Pargeon (second from right) was honored for 20 years of service to Presby’s Inspired Life. He celebrated the milestone anniversary with Michael Gravinese, Director of Facilities (far left), Marina Hacking,

Executive Director (far right), and Judee Bavaria, President and CEO of Presby’s Inspired Life (center).
