PREFACE

Don’t forget! All i-Tips and of course the instructions and patterns for the anniversary projects can be found at www.bernina.com/inspiration under “News”; embroidery design downloads are in the same place under “Downloads”.

Happy anniversary to us!Today, we’re proud to present to you the 50th issue of inspiration, including several “golden anniversary” pages. Looking back, we’ll show you five “blast from the past” models and how we’ve adapted them to today’s modern styles. Not just fashion, but BERNINA sewing-machine technology has evolved over time. Accordingly, we’ve continually launched ever-more-innovative machines on the market, with more features and functions, even better accessories, and a whole slew of creative options. That’s why almost every new issue of Inspiration has been accompanied by an innovation that takes the hard slog out of sewing, making it much more fun in the process.

In addition, we’ve given summer a column of its own, confident that our warm-weather projects will maximise your enjoyment of this glorious season. The “Ship Ahoy” theme will bring the holidays straight into your home. For those venturing further afield, though – say, to a lovely wide sandy beach, or even just to the local outdoor swimming pool – we’ve created a special beach outfit for you – light, airy and blissfully comfortable. And you’ve certainly nothing to fear from our sleight-of-hand tricks, which will help you conjure up some harmless fun and games at the seaside. Those staying put at home might fancy smartening up their surroundings with an African look. Tempted?

Rainy days are always good for sorting out cupboards and wardrobes, we find. Our garment bags and organisers for all sorts of odds and ends will bring a dash of order as well as a chic new look to your closet.

And we’ve remembered your everyday needs, too. Whether it’s dresses, shorts or even an adaptable jacket for those cooler days, you’re sure to find a must-have in these pages.

Wishing you hours of reading and sewing pleasure,

Your Editorial Team and Claudia Giesser, Editor-in-Chief

Stylish prints5010 DressThis dress simply screams primeval forest. The eye is irresistibly drawn to search out the leopards among the leaves and flowers – so the only extra little highlight needed is the sequin trim.

With conventional printing (also known as rotary screen printing), a separate print cylinder must be engraved for each individual colour used. With inkjet printing, not only do colours turn out brighter, but you can incorporate as many colours in a print design as it takes your fancy.

With Bulky Overlock Foot No. 12/12C

18

5011 TunicA gloriously lightweight cotton-silk mixture sets the tone for this translucent graphic print. Small sparkling highlights emphasise the slit at the neckline. The “Creative Décor” in the form of square studs by Prym is simply ironed on.

Jungle and graphic prints are currently flavour of the month, and the relatively new inkjet printing process offers virtually limitless ways to delight design-conscious sewers.

With Invisible Zipper Foot No. 35

5016 Clasp bagThe Fifties look is incomplete without a matching bag. This one instantly brings to mind the screen beauties of that era. Our clasp bag is quickly sewn, and is simply screwed onto its handle.

5015 Sheathe dressYou’ll always look fabulous in this dress. “Grande Dame” is the name of the fabric and really says it all. In keeping with the Fifties theme, we’ve embellished the back slit of the dress with an “arrowhead” – see also Tips pages.Tip: The hidden in-seam zip is particularly easy to insert with foot no. 35.

Revel with us Fifties style! The look is “in” once more, and this classy sheath dress is just the thing for that small affair.

23

Summer, sand and 5017 Beach tunicTwo variants of a simple style were constructed here. The tunic with the hip house print “Backum” in fashionable grey is quickly sewn. You should reckon on spending a bit more time on the tunic with the intricate embroidery design, though. All the embroidery designs can be found in Design Pack 12330 by OESD.

sun It’s off to the seaside in whisper-light clothing! Whether propping up the bar or stretched out on the sand, you’ll look great in our beach outfit that’s designed to flatter all shapes and sizes.

5018 Kimono trousersIt’s up to you whether to use a linen fabric for the trousers, or whether you prefer a material less prone to creasing. In either case these simple kimono trousers are especially quick to sew, since they don’t require a zip.

Sleight of hand

5020 Mill tote bagThis generously sized standing tote bag effortlessly holds all your important beach clobber. Opened out, it does duty as a comfy seat, or as a Nine Men’s Morris game for longer seaside sojourns. What more could you ask for?

With Binder Attachment

5022 Little bag This little bag will hold the playing tokens or other bits and bobs. The D-ring can be hooked onto the snaplink on the tote bag, which helps to keep the mill bag tidy.

Fabric: Swafing, Tactel Trend AG

5021 Playing tokensNine turquoise and nine orange tokens are needed for the classic game of Mill (Nine Men’s Morris). With the BERNINA CutWork Tool they practically make themselves, since the embroidery computer does the cutting out automatically. We’ve decorated the centre of the flowers with a flower stamp we created ourselves (BERNINA embroidery software function). For non-CutWork owners, we recommend using large buttons as playing pieces.

With CutWork

While a tote bag’s essential for the beach, a board game and chair, though useful, are far too heavy and bulky to pack. But wait – our versatile tote is all three rolled into one, thanks to a bit of creative legerdemain!

33

Ship ahoy!

5045 Seat cushionDecorative and the ultimate in comfort, this cushion comes into its own both on a chair or even on the floor. The appliqué and cord are worked in a rugged mariner look.

5047 Decorative “houses”Whether stuck in a plant pot or straight into the ground, these unusual wind spinners are also ideal as a gift for a garden party and are made in no time flat with the BERNINA CutWork tool.

The romance of the high seas brought to your balcony or terrace. The bright colours here lend a crisp Nordic look.

5047 Bottle coverThis way it’s crystal clear which bottle belongs to whom! A distinctive wipe-clean cover into which a scrap of paper with the owner’s name can be inserted will last for many a party.
