of Inspira Health Network in

Vineland was selected as the 2013 March of

Dimes Nurse of the Year Award in the Adult

Critical Care Emergency category by the March of

Dimes New Jersey chapter.

Through Nurse of the Year Awards, March of

Dimes recognizes nurses who demonstrate

exceptional patient care, compassion and service.

Whether serving as a health care provider,

educator, researcher or chapter volunteer/adviser,

these nurses have played a critical role in

improving the health of New Jersey’s mothers and

babies, according to Mach of Dimes.

Spoltore, RN, MSN, CCRN, has been with Inspira for more than 20 years. She is the administrative

director of Medical Care Center and 1EAST, responsible for managing 132 employees of four

individual Cost Centers along with daily operations to clude fiscal responsibility of operational and

salary budgets. She also is the Magnet Program director for 3 System Organization, responsible for

overseeing all aspects of the Magnet Program and working in collaboration with the Magnet Program

coordinator/nursing quality manager.

“We could not do the work of the March of Dimes without the passion and commitment of our nurses.

This is our opportunity to show them how special they truly are,” said Addy Bonet, state director of the

New Jersey Chapter of the March of Dimes.

Robotic surgery is the topic of this month’s

Healthline, hosted by Inspira Health Network and

The Daily Journal.

Sanjay Kasturi, a urologist with Delaware Valley

Urology in Vineland, is available to answer your

questions, which may be submitted in several ways:

By fax to (856) 451-8318.

By email at [email protected]; or visit

www.thedailyjournal.com and click on the

Healthline icon.

The deadline to submit questions is 5 p.m. Inquiries will be answered confidentially.

There are many benefits that come with robotic surgery,

including less bleeding, a shorter hospital stay and a

more improved, quicker recovery, Kasturi said.

“By going through the small ports, (the patient) avoids

larger and more painful incisions, so there is less of a

need for pain medication,” Kasturi said.

As with any surgical procedure, not every patient is an

ideal candidate.

Morbidly obese patients and those with chronic

obstructive pulmonary disease — a chronic lung disease typically known as COPD — are not usually

good candidates for robotic surgery, Kasturi said.

“(Those conditions) can make surgery a lot more difficult,” Kasturi said.

Of course, robotic surgery is performed by a surgeon — not the robot itself.

The success of robotic surgery depends on the skill and experience of the physicians, not the

equipment — and Kasturi said it is important for patients to do their homework when selecting who

will perform their procedure.

“I would just caution (patients) to do their research ctor (performing the surgery),” Kasturi

said. “There has been a lot in the news about lawsuits involving the Da Vinci (robot). The take home

(lesson) with that is, many times, it is unexperienced surgeons choosing the wrong patients. Do your

research and find someone who is fellowship trained or someone with extensive experience.”

Inspira warns of possible breach Computers stolen two months ago Feb. 21, 2014 1:20 AM |

VINELAND — Inspira Health Network is notifying 1,411 patients this week that their personal information may be compromised due to the theft of computer equipment two months ago.

The hospital system said letters are going to the patients, all of whom have used its radiology services from January 2009 until Dec. 23, 2013.

Inspira is offering to monitor credit histories for the next year for possible misuse related to the theft. The monitoring would include help if a problem does occur, the hospital system said.

The arrest of a suspect and recovery of most of the equipment hasn’t been enough for officials to be able to make certain no information was taken, however.

Inspira spokesman Greg Potter identified the stolen equipment as two computer towers. The towers had ended up with an area recycling company. Crucially, a hard drive was discarded and not recovered.

“Without the computer’s hard drive, conducting a forensic review was impossible,” a statement from Inspira said. “Inspira instead conducted an analysis of similar computers in the network, as well as the digital security systems in place to protect them.

Inspira said it also hired an outside company to assist it in analyzing and scanning computer systems. “While this process delayed the decision to notify patients, it did indicate that it would be highly unlikely that anyone could retrieve data stored on the computer’s hard drive,” the hospital stated.

According to Inspira, the analysis found that the hard drive may have contained patient information in the form of temporary Internet files. The files would be “imaging studies such as X-rays or CT scans” and might include names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers.

The man arrested in the theft is Christopher McCourt, 29, of Port Norris and, at the time of the theft, a former employee. Police said McCourt got $7 each for the towers and used it to buy gas for a friend’s car.

The hospital system will use every legal avenue against the person who stole the computer equipment, officials said. It also is reviewing policies and procedures on data security and privacy. Inspira also has opened a telephone call center at (877) 841-8157 for the affected patients. It is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Inspira wants volunteers Feb. 27, 2014 2:21 AM Written by Bruce Knoll Jr.

BRIDGETON — The Inspira Health Network is looking for men and women interested in volunteering at their Bridgeton and Elmer locations.

Volunteers will provide care and support services to patients, caregivers and office staff at Inspira Medical Center Elmer and Inspira Health Center Bridgeton, according to a news release by the health network.

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available, including office and clerical support, greeting visitors, cashiers, assistance with food services, nursing staff support and visiting patients for emotional or spiritual support.

Individuals who are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of patients and caregivers are encouraged to apply, the news release said.

Applicants must be at least 14 years old to volunteer.

There are several benefits to volunteering, according to the health network’s website. These include free lunch or dinner while on duty, free yearly flu shots, holiday parties, discounts at the health network’s fitness center and a yearly awards banquet.

Inspira Health Network was formed in November 2012 following the merger of South Jersey Healthcare and Underwood-Memorial Hospital.

The health network now is comprised of three hospitals, four health centers and more than 60 additional health locations in Cumberland, Salem and Gloucester counties.

For more information about the program or to submit an application, call Susan Krassow at (856) 363-1738 or visitwww.inspirahealthnetwork.org.

Wanda Bennett, of Vineland, works out with the guidance of Fitness Specialist Brian Archut at Inspira Health Network’s Fitness Connection in Vineland.

Vineland program touts health benefits of regular workoutsPosted: Monday, February 3, 2014 12:01 am

Wanda Bennett was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. Then after she started chemotherapy, doctors discovered a painful hole in her intestine.

So her health was looking pretty bleak to her - until she got a prescription to go to the gym.

But Bennett didn't just pick the closest place to her Vineland home to do her workouts. She went to the Inspira Fitness Connection, which was named the national pilot program last year for Exercise is Medicine by the American College of Sports Medicine.

Exercise is Medicine, started by ACSM and the American Medical Association in 2007, promotes the health benefits of workouts to both patients and their doctors.

The Inspira Fitness Connection is a sprawling gym - that also includes a fully equipped physical-therapy office, dietitians, nutritionists and other specialists - in a perfect location to be part of that medical-fitness program. It sits just down a hill and across a road from the Inspira Vineland Medical Center, the Cumberland County city's main hospital.

Fitness Connection staff members say that location wor well for patients who get sent there - who often then go on to become part of the regular workout crowd at the gym. And Bruce Willson, the director, says about 70 percent of the people who go to the Fitness Connection use the machines and weights and group classes the same way members do at any gym anywhere.

Those customers include some very healthy, fit people - among them Mike Trout, the Millville High School baseball star who has become a Major League Baseball star in his first two seasons as a California Angel. The American League all-star still goes back to the Fitness Connection to work out in the off-season, and Willson proudly points out the mark Trout has made in the Performance Improvement Training wing of the gym.

It's about 11.5 feet above the floor - which is how high Trout, who also played basketball in high school, touched on a wall in a recent test of his vertical leap. The gym also shows off Trout's picture and autograph on the same wall.

But obviously, not everyone at this gym - or any gym - is an elite athlete. And since 2010, more than 1,700 new people with a host of physical ailments have been sent to the Fitness Connection under its Physician Referred Exercise Program. Brittany Raupp, the PREP coordinator, added that more than 200 local doctors have sent patients to the program with a prescription to exercise as part of their recoveries.

And doctors can actually fill out a simple, pre-printed prescription form that includes a checklist of the five PREP specializations - "lifestyle management; diabetes management; heart heal ; cancer survivorship; and (preparation) for surgery." The other side of the prescription explains the details of PREP to patients in question-and-answer form:

Prescription to perspire

Briefly, it lasts 60 days, costs $60, includes two sessions each week with a "medical fitness specialist" - plus unlimited use of the gym during the rest of those two months in PREP. Memberships are not covered by medical insurance.

There are more details, but doctors don't have to use that formal PREP prescription - they also can fill out their orders on one of their own prescription pads or skip t per entirely and make the referral directly online, adds Brian Archut, a PREP fitness coordinator.

When new clients come into the Fitness Connection, the staff checks blood pressure, weight and other key numbers. And the staff then coaches patients through the areas their doctors specified - and is trained to monitor their progress and health as they exercise, Willson adds.

Phil Trotter, from the Indianapolis-based ACSM, emphasizes that Inspira is hardly alone among health-care companies in operating its own fitness facilities. That's a trend, and it's growing across the country.

AtlantiCare, for one, opened its 59,000-square-foot LifeCenter in Egg Harbor Township in 2005 - with about a third of that space taken up by doctors' offices, says Bruce Heon, the LifeCenter's executive director. The full-scale gym has swimming pools and offers about 70 group classes per week and many other services, he adds.

The center works with an advisory committee of AtlantiCare doctors and also provides doctors with pre-printed prescription forms, Heon adds. It has a program called "60 for 60" - also a 60-day introductory period at the gym for $60 - and is working this year to be formally certified by t tional Medical Fitness Association.

For now, the Fitness Connection in Vineland is one of only two facilities in New Jersey listed as certified by the Medical Fitness Association. The other is in Voorhees, in Camden County.

Trotter, from the ACSM, says there's a reason the Fitness Connection has those credentials, and his group made it the national pilot for Exercise is Medicine.

"They were chosen because of the track record they have for being able to work with physicians," said Trotter. "They have taken the trouble to establish those relationships. ... That doesn't just naturally exist."

Trotter adds that while he sees this gym in Vineland as a national leader - "A shining example of what (Exercise is Medicine) is intended to do" - that trend of combining the two will only continue to w. That's partly because of national health policy, including the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

"The way you're going to reduce the total cost of care - and there's a real push to reduce readmissions and length of stay (in hospitals) - is to limit medical encounters that are so expensive," Trotter said. "You put patients in less intensive and less expensive (programs) that ultimately reduce the cost of medical care. That's in effect what the Fitness Connection is doing."

Paul Cooper, the retired president of South Jersey Health Systems, remembers when what's now the Fitness Connection - with 3,000 or so members - was an underused indoor tennis club with a bar just inside the front door. The former SJHS, which owned the hospitals in Bridgeton, Elmer, Millville and Vineland, bought the building and started converting it into a gym in the 1980s.

"It was all part of the philosophy that we were trying to get people to change their lifestyles. It started out as a small cardiac-rehab (program) but grew to what it is now," said Cooper, who's a Fitness Connection member himself - he tries to work out three days per week.

But Wanda Bennett, the breast cancer patient, makes it a point to get in there five days per week, sometimes twice per day. She likes what PREP and the staff at her gym have done for her health and her outlook on her disease - and her life.

3 Press of Atlantic City February 3, 2014

Bennett saw a brochure for PREP in her oncologist's office and asked about it, "And she said, 'It would be totally perfect for you,'" Bennett reports. "It's just mind-blowing thing, what the physical can do for the mental."

One benefit of the Fitness Connection for her is that it has introduced her to several new friends who understand the fight she's fighting. They understand because they're in the middle of their own major health battles.

"When I came in here, I was like the walking dead," said George Campbell, 52, of Vineland, who also works out five days per week to recover from a "major stroke" early last year. He came out with his left side basically paralyzed and went through months of therapy before he got the recommendation for the next step i his recovery.

"I need to come to this gym here, so I can get my strength back," says Campbell, who is still out on disability, and still struggles a bit with his speech after the stroke. "I look at it like it's my job to come here and get healthy. ... When my PREP program was over, I came back and told them, 'I want to sign up for a year.'"

In one recent triumph, he got his doctor's OK to drive again, Campbell added happily.

Another workout buddy is Ron McDonald, 66, of Millville, whose health troubles in the past four years included a heart attack that was followed the next year by a throat-cancer diagnosis.

He lost about 80 pounds, down to 170, which could have been good - except he also lost most of his strength. He credits the staff at his favorite gym for helping him get it back.

"They know their machines, they know how to guide you, d they care. They really do care," says McDonald, who is on the pastoral staff at his Millville church. "They're concerned about people. They really try to watch what you're doing and advance you through, in stages."

Bennett also believes in the people she works out with nd the people who help them. That's why she's so glad she got a doctor's orders to head to the gym.

"A prescription that gets your life in order was the best thing that could ever happen to me," she said. "I think it should be done all over - a prescription to heal your mind, body and soul."

Computers with potential patient information were sold for gas money in Vineland Posted: Friday, February 21, 2014 11:28 am By ANJALEE KHEMLANI, Staff Writer Two computers stolen from Inspira Health Network and allegedly sold for gas money may have contained patient information, according to the medical center. A potential data breach was reported by the medical center in Vineland that could affect about 1,411 patients. The information stored on the computers, which were discovered stolen in December, may have been imaging studies such as X-rays or CT Scans, and include patient names, birth dates, patient numbers, dates of service and possibly Social Security numbers. The information would affect patients of the network from January 2009 to Dec. 23, 2013, the health care organization said in a statement Thursday. Inspira discovered two computers were stolen from the radiology departments and one of them may have contained patient information. Officials said the computers were stolen by a former employee and sold to a salvage location. According to Inspira, police investigated and discovered the computers were sold for gas money. Officials said any patient information stored on the computer would be difficult to access due to the type of digital security systems used by the organization. Additional information about the case was not available Friday from Vineland police. Inspira has opened a call center at 877-841-8157 to answer questions about the possible data breach. Vineland to vote on smoking ban in parks, all municipal sites Posted: Sunday, February 23, 2014 7:54 pm By THOMAS BARLAS, Staff Writer

Cumberland County’s most populous municipality wants to reduce tobacco use in a county with the highest adult smoking rate in New Jersey. Posted: Sunday, February 23, 2014 7:54 pm By THOMAS BARLAS, Staff Writer Cumberland County’s most populous municipality wants to reduce tobacco use in a county with the highest adult smoking rate in New Jersey. Vineland City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to ban smoking in its parks and other public properties. The vote, which follows a public hearing on the issue, essentially creates an entire city block where smoking will be banned. City Hall, Police Department headquarters and Board of Education offices fill a block bordered by Wood, Plum, Sixth and Seventh streets. The city’s proposed regulations, and similar ones already enacted by the school district, will complement a state ban on smoking in indoor public places and workplaces throughout New Jersey. The American Cancer Society estimates that 25 percent of adults in Cumberland County smoke tobacco products. South Jersey as a whole has the highest adult smoking rate in the state, according to the society. City Councilwoman Maritza Gonzalez, who helped organize a series of monthly health and fitness events last summer, said studies show that reducing the number of places where people can smoke leads to a decrease in tobacco use. “Health and wellness are impacted by tobacco use,” Gonzalez said. “Many of our residents struggle daily with their addiction. “The tobacco industry targets our youth each and every day to become smokers in an effort to replace the smokers who die or quit,” she said. “I want to teach our kids that smoking isn’t the norm. To do that, we have to create environments that are tobacco-free so they not only hear the (do not smoke) message, they perceive it as well because it’s not permitted everywhere.” City officials said penalties for breaking the regulations will also help. The city will fine offenders $50 to $100 for a first offense, $100 to $200 for a second offense, and $200 to $500 for subsequent offenses. Vineland is not the only Cumberland County municipality imposing smoking bans on public properties. Lawrence Township Committee voted unanimously in January to ban smoking at its publicly owned recreational properties. The ban carries the same fine structure as is being proposed in Vineland.

Melanie Pirollo, administrative director of cancer services for Inspira Health Network, said such municipal action will help deter smoking and the illnesses it causes. The bans create yet another layer of anti-smoking messages, she said. That could be aided by a state measure that would impose smoking bans in public parks and on beaches. A bill that would create that ban was released last week by the Assembly Tourism and Gaming Committee. Bill advocates said the ban will help improve public health and reduce pollution, such as cigarette butts, on beaches. The proposed state ban includes penalties that are more costly than the ones in Vineland and Lawrence Township. Violators would be charged $250 for a first offense, $500 for a second offense and $1,000 for subsequent offenses. Contact Thomas Barlas: 609-226-9197 [email protected]

Heck, the emergency room with security is just down the hall.

This way, Mayor Albert Kelly can leave Code Blue at 2 a.m. work out, and come back refreshed.

VINELAND — A small fire occurred on the roof of Inspira Medical Center Vineland, according to a hospital spokesperson, but it was quickly taken care of.

The Vineland Fire Department was notified of the fire by the hospital's alarm system at 4:35 p.m.

According to Capt. Anthony Baldosaro, welders were working on the lobby's front canopy earlier in the day. When a roofer went to patch up the canopy, he noticed the fire and extinguished most of it.

Vineland Fire Department then extinguished the rest, with the fire under control by 4:55 p.m.

Smoke from the fire made its way through the front entrance of the hospital, according to a hospital spokesman, but did not affect any patient care.

MULLICA HILL — Under the leadership of new CEO John DiAngelo, Inspira Health Network plans on driving more resources into preventative health care.

Inspira spans South Jersey, with hospitals in Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties. The network includes 60 additional facilities spread throughout the area.

Effective Jan. 1, John DiAngelo began his leadership of the network as its president and CEO. It’s his plan to improve health care at Inspira to the point where patients won’t even need to go to the hospitals.

“Everything revolved around the hospitals and what we’re seeing, as we’re moving forward is, especially as you’re moving into population health and trying to keep your communities well, it’s not in the hospitals,” DiAngelo said.

“It’s more out in the communities. It’s more when people go to the primary care offices or, even better, if you can keep them from hitting your primary care offices through community needs work.”

DiAngelo grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from St. Joseph’s University in 1974 with a degree in accounting. He also earned his masters of business administration from Widener University.

For eight years, DiAngelo worked with a Philadelphia-based consulting firm.

“When I was consulting, I sort of migrated to the health care side of our practice,” DiAngelo said. “Once I started getting exposure to our client, I saw that it was one of the most interesting fields and one I thought I could do some good in.”

Working with children’s hospitals was especially meaningful, with DiAngelo having three children of his own.

In 1992 he became the chief financial officer for Memorial Hospital of Burlington County and was a part of the hospital’s merger that created Virtua Memorial — becoming vice president of planning and network development.

It was there that he first worked under Chet Kaletkowski, who would become the president of South Jersey Healthcare and later brought DiAngelo in as the chief financial officer in 2000 and later as vice president.

South Jersey Healthcare merged with Underwood-Memorial Hospital on Nov. 1, 2012 to create Inspira Health Network

Kaletkowski became the president and CEO of Inspira in its first year, in order to oversee the merger, but had long planned his retirement.

“You put in 40 years in the business and I felt it was time,” Kaletkowski said.

Inspira Health Network’s board of trustees began a search for Kaletkowski’s replacement.

We’ve got a lot of our patients that are just flowing through these practices that will never hit our hospital. “We had a search committee that did an extensive search all over the country and John was clearly the best person for the job,” said Peter Galetto, chairman of the Inspira Health Network’s board of trustees.

For Kaletkowski, it was easy to find a new president.

“I was very clear with the board that (DiAngelo) should be my successor,” he said. “There was no doubt in my mind.”

Before showing interest in the position, DiAngelo made sure to go to his wife for counsel.

“Because, it is a family commitment. It’s not just a commitment I was making,” DiAngelo said. “She was behind me 100 percent.”

DiAngelo, a Mullica Hill resident, now lives five minutes from his office, which is centrally between Inspira Medical Center Woodbury and Inspira Medical Center Vineland.

According to Kaletkowski and Galetto, it’s DiAngelo’s strategic thinking and willingness to try new programs that makes him perfect for the job.

“The goal is to basically say, where do you think we are going and let’s try and get there,” DiAngelo said. “Sometimes you make the right decision, sometimes you don’t.

“I think one of the things that we need to be comfortable with — and our people are and I think I bring that to the table for them — is I’d much prefer you give it a shot and fail than sit there and not try a new program because you’re afraid you might fail. Because, if we get that mentality, we’re going to lose.”

One such instance is the Living Independent For Elders (LIFE) program, which enables senior citizens to live independently while also being closely monitored by health care professionals at no cost for eligible participants.

“This LIFE program is a good program for our community and we’re willing to make the investment,” DiAngelo said. “If it doesn’t work, we’ll move away from it.”

Under DiAngelo’s leadership, he wants Inspira to focus more on preventative care instead of hospital care. He explains it as a shift more toward “valuable” health care and valuable experiences than a model based on the “volume” of health care.

“We’ve got a lot of our patients that are just flowing through these practices that will never hit our hospital,” DiAngelo said. “That’s what’s important for us from a standpoint of putting our resources into the places where they make the most sense going forward.”

new dance moves and spending time with family and friends.”

Coronary heart disease, which causes heart attacks, is the leading cause of death for Americans, and

one way to improve heart health is through exercise.

When done on a regular basis as a form of exercise, dancing can burn as many calories as swimming,

walking or riding a bike.

“Not only is dancing fun, but it is a healthy way to stay fit for people of all ages, shapes and sizes,” said

Scott Burlingame, R.N. Stroke/Chest Pain Center Program Manager at Inspira Medical

Center . “You may be surprised at the wide range of physical and mental benefits. Dancing

on a regular basis can help with weight maintenance or weight loss, decrease your blood pressure and

manager your cholesterol. Dancing also makes you feel more energetic, decreases depression,

increases coordination and muscle strength, and makes us feel more positive about our lives.”

Local dance groups such as the Mt. Pisgah Sacred Dancers from Vineland, Corrine Gangi Dance

Center in Pitman, and Roseann Bruna School of Dance in will be on hand to teach the latest

dance moves in jazz, contemporary, hip-hop and even tap.

DEPTFORD TWP. — Promoting women’s health as part of American Heart Month, a number of dance

studios from across South Jersey participated in Saturday’s 10th annual National "Day of Dance” at the

Deptford Mall.

In cooperation with Inspira Health Network and the Spirit of Woman organization, four dance schools from

across southern New Jersey all promoted dancing as a means of exercise to promote better heart health in

women.

While the event is in its 10th year nationally, Friday’s dance-off was only the fourth in South Jersey of its kind,

with the first taking place in 2010 at the then-South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center.

Inspira uses the event each year to promote heart health, offering health risk assessment tests to women and

informing them about the importance of staying active.

With coronary heart disease as the leading cause of death for Americans, said Inspira spokesman Gregory

Potter, the health network wants to promote some creative ways to keep Americans of all age healthy.

“It’s really to get them thinking about their own heart health,” said Potter. “The dance component is really to

get people to start thinking about dancing as exercise.”

Corrine Gangi Dance Center routinePitman's Corrine Gangi Dance Center has its child students perform a dance routine at the Deptford Mall for the 10th annual 'Day of Dance" on Saturday.

“Dancing also makes you feel more energetic, decreases depression, increases coordination and muscle

strength, and makes us feel more positive about our lives,” said Scott Burlingame, a registered nurse and

program manager at the Stroke/Chest Pain Center at the Inspira Medical Center, in Vineland.

There were nearly 200 people crowding around the middle of the Deptford Mall and hanging over the upstairs

railing to watch a number of dance school routines.

For Corrine and Julie Gangi, the owners of Corrine Gangi Dance Center, in Pitman, the chance to have their

students perform in front of an audience while promoting the art of dance was a great opportunity for the

school in its first year participating in the event.

Corrine, a 74-year-old who said she has been dancing “ever since I was five years old,” attributes her own

health to her dancing career, with a recent trip to her doctor revealing she’s in much better shape than others

her age.

“And you can do it at any age,” added her daughter Julie.

Cabin fever sweeps New Jersey; doctors offer advice to cure winter blues

By Kelly Roncace/South Jersey Times Follow on Twitter on February 20, 2014 at 8:00 AM, updated February 20, 2014 at 8:06 AM

Since the beginning of December, snow has covered most of the Garden State.

The temperature has dipped well below zero countless times, and the ice just won’t seem to melt.

After being stuck inside for so long, a claustrophobic feeling may begin to set in, bringing feelings of extreme irritability and restlessness.

That feeling is called “cabin fever” and it was first recognized in the early 1900s.

Dr. Charles Marder, therapist, licensed professional counselor and licensed rehabilitation counselor for Inspira Behavioral Wellness Center in Vineland, said cabin fever has been associated with claustrophobia, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), depression, anxiety and simple boredom.

“Cabin fever is not a technical diagnosis,” Marder said. “It’s not something that will be found in the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.”

However, what has come to be known as cabin fever has symptoms, both mental and physical, and is very real to many people.

“Cabin fever happens at a very real time of year, during the winter solstice, the longest periods of darkness during the year,” Marder said.

Dr. Thomas Newmark, a psychiatrist at the Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, said cabin fever occurs when someone feels confined to their surroundings for an extended period of time.

“Patients say they feel tense, irritable, agitated, frustrated and may have difficulty sleeping,” Newmark said. “They can also have headaches or body pain.”

Marder said symptoms can range from feeling trapped and edgy to having a panic attack.

“Racing thoughts, worries, thoughts of doom and gloom — these are called cognitive distortions,” he said. “You may have feelings of all or nothing, and worse-case scenarios like you’ll never get out or you could freeze to death.”

Marder said while unhappiness is a feeling people can experience in everyday life any time of year, it can intensify during the winter months.

“It’s wanting something you don’t have at the time,” he said, mentioning glancing through a tropical vacation brochure.

Newmark said the best way to alleviate feelings of cabin fever is to change things up.

“When the weather breaks or is tolerable, get outside, even for a short period of time,” he said. “Getting outside can do a great deal to reduce your tense state.”

There are also indoor activities that can help reduce cabin fever.

“Play games, and not the video kind either. Pretend you’re camping, appreciate doing something different and be sure to laugh,” Marder said. “I think board games should fly off the shelves as much as milk and bread does.”

Newmark agreed.

“If you’re stuck indoors, be creative,” he said. “Interact on the internet or watch a movie. Do something to break the monotony or sameness.”

Marder said changing the way you look at being trapped inside can also help break cabin fever.

“Reality is our perception, so if we think it’s real, it is real,” he said. “That’s the reason we can change our thoughts on cabin fever. “If we change the way we look at things, the things we look at will change.”

Inspira Health Network informs patients of possible data breach after computer thefts

By Don E. Woods/South Jersey Times Follow on Twitter on February 21, 2014 at 11:51 AM, updated February 21, 2014 at 12:37

VINELAND — Inspira Health Network plans on notifying 1,411 patients about a potential data breach after a former employee allegedly stole two computers from Vineland’s radiology department last December.

The health network is sending out letters this week to patients who had imaging studies at Inspira Medical Center Vineland from January 2009 to Dec. 23, 2013.

According to Vineland Police Department, former employee Christopher McCourt, 29, of Temperance Street, in Port Norris, allegedly stole two computers from an unsecured filing room in Vineland’s radiology department.

He allegedly took the computers to a local recycling yard and received $7 for each computer, reports indicated.

Each computer was valued at $2,800.

“An investigation, conducted by the Vineland Police Department, concluded that the computers were not stolen for the information they contained but were sold for gas money,” Inspira said in a statement.

“Additionally, any patient information potentially stored on the computer would have been very difficult to access due to the digital security systems used by the health network.”

However, according to Inspira, the hard drives of the computers were thrown away prior to being taken to the salvage location, which makes it impossible to check and see if patient information was compromised.

Inspira previously stated that there was no patient information on the computers.

2 South Jersey Times February 21, 2014

By conducting an analysis of a similar computer to the ones stolen, Inspira determined that the hard drive may have contained patient information stored as temporary Internet files, including X-rays, scans, patient names, birth dates, patient numbers, dates of service, and even some cases of Social Security numbers.

It was also determined, according to Inspira, that it would be highly unlikely for anyone to retrieve this data from the discarded hard drive and that person would face “significant difficulties” retrieving the data.

Inspira notified the patients as a precautionary measure and continues to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

“This will help detect possible misuse of personal information and provide identity protection services focused on immediate identification and resolution of identity theft,” Inspira stated in its press release. “Patients are also being counseled to regularly review credit reports and account statements for any unauthorized activity.”

Affected patients will also receive a one-year credit for monitoring services.

For additional questions about the possible data breach, contact Inspira’s call center at 877-841-8157. The call center’s operating hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Siemens Healthcare Launches CareXcell(TM) for Sustainable Population Health Management -- Comprehensive IT solution optimizes the complete care management process for patients and populations in response to accountable care requirements. -- Open architecture bridges clinical systems across care settings to aggregate and normalize patient data for more accurate risk stratification and health monitoring. -- Evidence-based care plans generate dynamic event-triggered alerts and patient-specific interventions to help coordinate care for improved provider collaboration and patient outcomes. -- Inspira Health Network has signed the first CareXcell(TM) subscription service agreement. MALVERN, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--February 20, 2014--

Today, Siemens Healthcare announced the launch of CareXcell, the latest addition to the company's portfolio of next-generation IT solutions designed to help healthcare providers successfully address the new care and payment requirements of value-based and accountable care models. CareXcell comprises innovative technologies that help facilitate improved care management and risk stratification of individual patients and entire populations through open communication and data sharing across providers, care venues, and transitions. Evidence-based care plans, integrated with underlying business process management technology, support the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care across the continuum to help improve outcomes and increase patient and provider satisfaction. Siemens Healthcare is also announcing that Inspira Health Network is the first provider to sign up for the CareXcell cloud-based service.

"The successful transition to value-based purchasing models requires new strategies and tools that shift population health management from reactive to proactive throughout the entire lifecycle of care," said John Glaser, PhD, CEO, Health Services, Siemens Healthcare. "CareXcell provides a collaborative framework for improving care delivery and monitoring across a community, integrating advanced workflow and event-processing technology with clinical evidence to help providers address patients' health and risk factors in a timelier, more efficient manner."

CareXcell consolidates and normalizes patient data from disparate EHRs and clinical systems into a single patient-centered repository through any health information exchange. Accessing summarized, real-time clinical data improves provider efficiency in identifying and addressing patient-specific issues and risk factors before they become more severe, costly conditions. For example, CareXcell can help providers initiate appropriate interventions as part of patients' personalized care plans to help improve long-term outcomes, keeping rising-risk patients from becoming high-risk, high-cost utilizers and ultimately strengthening their bottom line.

Evidence-based care plans drive CareXcell's patient-specific interventions for chronic conditions, risk reduction, and prevention. The care plans are supplied by Motive Medical Intelligence, a leader in providing actionable, evidence-based intelligence inside clinical workflow and point-of-care solutions. Motive's dynamic care plans, integrated within the embedded business process management technology, deliver patient-specific messages for evidence-based interventions at every point in the care workflow. An underlying workflow engine monitors the care plan activities for completion or deviations, triggering timely patient-specific interventions and event-based alerts, as well as escalating missed tasks to a specified care team member. CareXcell simplifies workflow across the care team by giving providers real-time decision support, identifying care gaps, recommending actionable interventions triggered by those gaps, and documenting problems and goals.

Throughout all these processes, CareXcell collects critical quality improvement information and analyzes patient and population data, allowing healthcare organizations to monitor clinical outcomes and performances across the continuum. This information can then be used to drive strategies for clinical, operational, and financial excellence. And because engaged patients typically have better outcomes, CareXcell incorporates tools such as a patient portal, text and secure email notifications, and evidence-based educational resources to help patients, as well as their families or personal support network, to be more active in their care and knowledgeable about their condition.

In addition, Siemens' CareXcell Services provide a comprehensive approach focused on helping clients understand what is required for them to respond to new care and reimbursement models, and what role technology can play in improving, then sustaining, quality and cost effectiveness.

"Based on Siemens' expertise and ability to act as a long-term partner, we have chosen CareXcell as a complete end-to-end solution to enable us to intervene sooner, manage chronic diseases better and keep people in South Jersey well longer," said Tom Pacek, vice president and chief information officer at Inspira Health Network. "Our approach is three-fold. We are connecting high-risk patients with dedicated care management teams who coordinate across the continuum to reduce the total costs of care. We're also managing rising-risk patients in a medical home model avoiding unnecessary, higher cost spending, and we are establishing easy-access care for our low-risk patients with a focus on keeping patients healthy within our health network."

By John DiAngelo, Inspira Health Network President and CEO

Every year in February, health care providersacross the nation join together to raise aware-ness about heart disease by recognizing National Heart Month. At Inspira Health Network, we feel it’s an important time to educate our community about this dangeroushealth issue.

One of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family is to learn the symptoms of a heart attack. You probably knowthat chest pain is the most common symptom. But did you know that women often have different symptoms than men? You should also be alert for signs like shortness of breath, sweating, neck or jaw pain, dizziness and abdominal pain.

Most importantly, if you think you or a loved one is experiencing a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. Because during a heart attack, timeis muscle. This means that if you receive the rightcare quickly during a heart attack, you’re lesslikely to damage your most important muscle:your heart.

In the event that you need cardiac assistance,I’m very proud that Inspira Health Network offers your family high quality care right here in your community. For heart attack patients, we are the only health system that offers emergency angioplasty services in Cumberland,Gloucester and Salem counties. Our experiencedcardiologists are on call around the clock in Vineland and Woodbury to provide this life-saving procedure to you and your family if you need it.

During an emergency angioplasty, a physicianuses a catheter to clear blockages in the arteriesaround the heart and can also place a stent torestore blood flow if needed. The ability for us to perform emergency angioplasty right here in your community significantly speeds up treatment for many heart attack patients. Beforewe offered this service, some patients would betransported far from their homes to receive thislevel of care.

One way we measure the quality of this service is the time it takes us to get our patientsfrom the door of the ER into the cath lab for the procedure. At Inspira Medical Center Woodbury, our team has maintained average“door-to-balloon times” of 58 minutes –considerably faster than the national standard.

In November, we received approval to also provide this service at Inspira Medical CenterVineland and our times so far have also beenbelow the national benchmark. This is an outstanding achievement, because with thisservice now available at two locations inGloucester and Cumberland counties, InspiraHealth Network serves as the region’s leader for emergency cardiac care.

Providing the highest quality cardiac services has always been a part of our mission. At InspiraMedical Center Woodbury, we introduced emergency angioplasty in 2009 and have sincebuilt a reputation as a leader in heart care in the region.

At Inspira Medical Center Vineland, in additionto receiving approval for emergency angioplasty,we have also received designation as a Chest

Pain Center for having the right protocols, equipment and expert teams in place to treatheart attacks 24/7. The Cardiac ICU in Vinelandhas also received two Beacon Awards from theAmerican Association of Critical Care Nurses forproviding quality nursing care and achieving excellent outcomes for our patients.

At all of our medical centers, we’ve ensured thatthe minute you arrive in our emergency rooms, you’ll receive the right treatment, right away.

Inspira is dedicated to providing quality cardiaccare for our community. From emergency angioplasty to quality cardiac rehabilitation services at all of our hospitals, we support thousands of patients in our community everyyear as they recover from cardiac events. Many women choose a tub of warm water at the end of the day to find peace, seekcomfort, ease pain and simply relax. So it does not surprise me that today, morewomen are choosing to labor and/or give birth to their babies in water. You may not know this, but water birth is not a new concept in childbirth. In fact, women have been using water to ease discomfort and increase relaxation duringlabor and birth since early civilization. In the book Gentle Birth Choices, BarbaraHooper, R.N. talks about the first recorded modern water birth, which took place in France in 1803. It is reported in detail in a French medical journal, that awoman who had been laboring for 48 hours went into a warm bath to ease thediscomfort from her labor that was not progressing. Soon aer relaxing in thewater, the baby was born—even before she had time to leave the bath. Water birth found its way to the United States nearly 25 years ago. In 1998, Water-birth International was formed to meet the need for up-to-date and accurate in-formation regarding the use of water in labor and birth. In the early 2000’s, whilepracticing midwifery, I began noticing that a significant amount of women wereinquiring about the method and many were in fact choosing water birth. Sincethe 2003 opening of Inspira Medical Center Elmer’s “water birth suite” equippedwith a tub designed especially for birth, along with the development of specificwater birth protocols, I have been able to offer low-risk women the choice ofwater birth in a hospital setting. Over the years, I have been privileged to assistmore than 1,000 women in giving birth in water.During water birth the woman steps into a deep tub of warm water as she is en-tering in the later stages of active labor. You can see the woman visibly relax intothe water as she reclines in the tub, fully immersing her belly. Most times the abil-ity to relax in water assists the woman to progress to full dilatation. e lights aredim, the room is quite, her support people are close, and her favorite relaxingmusic is playing. She listens to her body as she begins to push out her baby. e

baby is gently born into the warm water and lied to the surface. With the baby’sface out of the water, the new mother floats her baby in the water; all is quiet asthe baby looks into the mother’s eyes and takes his or her first breath.ere are numerous benefits to consider when choosing to birth in water. emethod facilitates mobility and enables the mother to assume any position whichis comfortable for labor and birth. It also speeds up labor, reduces blood pressure, gives the mother an increased feeling of control, provides significant pain relief, promotes relaxation, conserves the mother’s energy, reduces the need for drugsand intervention, gives the mother a private protected space, reduces perinealtrauma and eliminates episiotomies, reduces cesarean rates and it encourages aneasier birth for the mother and a gentler welcome for the baby. In addition, waterbirth is highly rated by mothers—typically stating they would consider givingbirth in water again—and it is highly rated by experienced providers. As a certified nurse midwives, Gentle Beginnings supports women emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually to give birth naturally. Many times that meansassisting women to birth in water. Whether or not a woman chooses to laborand/or birth in water is up to her, however; every woman should make an in-formed choice about what birth plan makes the most sense for her and her baby. If you are interested in finding out more about water birth, or would like to haveyour baby born into water, please contact us at either of our office locations. Addi-tional information about water birth can also be found at www.waterbirth.org.

As a young woman, what are the most importantsteps I can take to maintain good health? For young women, it is important to start making healthier life choices. First and foremost it’s important to learn to enjoy a wholesome balanceddiet rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals. They also should strive to maintain an active lifestyle and start a partnership with their gynecologistto address contraceptive options, sexual disorder, STD prevention, as well as receive annual Pap smear screening and well women visits.

If I am over 40, what types of health issues should I be mindful of?The fourth decade of women’s lives is marked with various changes in hormonal patterns that can cause menstrual irregularities and sexualchanges. It also coincides with the peak age of many serious gynecologicalconditions, which can manifest themselves as pelvic pain, cramps or irregular bleeding. Most conditions are benign, but often can be signs of acancer of the reproductive organs. Women in their forties should start theannual mammogram screening, continue Pap screening, take osteoporosisprevention measures, be aware of their family hereditary diseases, seekproper cancer screening, and discuss any new menstrual irregularities, gental or urinary symptoms, and pelvic pain with their gynecologist.

A Inspira Health Network it’s our mission to improve the health and

well-being of everyone in our community. And that commitment extends beyond the walls of our hospitals, health centers and physicians’ offices. We’re dedicated to understanding the health needs of our neighbors and offering programs and services that provide a real community benefit.

You might be asking yourself, “What exactly is community benefit?” At the health network we define it as a program or activity that improves access to health care services, provides health education, or generally enhances the health of the population. Through the years, Inspira has offered numerous free programs and services that have helped to improve the health of everyone in our community.

I’m proud that Inspira Health Network has been recognized statewide as one of the leading providers of health programs and initiatives that directly address the health needs of our neighbors and seek to change people’s lives. In fact, Inspira Medical Centers scored the highest for total community benefit provided among hospitals in the state in our selected peer group.

It’s important to note that we don’t simply guess about what the health needs of our community really are. We partnered with a variety of agencies to complete health needs assessments in Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties. These studies give us

valuable insights into the individual health needs and challenges our neighbors face in all three counties.

We have reviewed the data from these studies with a variety of partner agencies in our community to identify the greatest areas of need. For example, one prevalent health issue that we will be addressing across our region this year is the high level of high prescription drug abuse among teens.

Parents may not realize that unused prescription drugs left in the family medicine cabinet can be extremely dangerous. A recent study showed that one in four teens has misused or abused a prescription drug at least once in their lifetime – a 33 percent increase over the past five years.

To combat this, Inspira is working with community partners to raise awareness about the proper usage and disposal of prescription drugs. We will also educate teens about the dangers of taking medications without the supervision of a doctor. We’re developing an awareness campaign that will be pushed out through our community using social media and word of mouth in our schools.

Through our campaign, we will also be promoting the efforts of the Southwest Council, the Cumberland County Healthy Communities Coalition, the Salem-Cumberland Regional Action Toward Community Health Coalition and Steered Straight to place prescription drop boxes

throughout our communities. They offer families an easy way to dispose of old prescription drugs that may just be sitting in the family medicine cabinet.

Inspira is also partnering with physicians to train them to use a prescription monitoring system. This statewide database collects prescription data on controlled dangerous substances and helps prescribers and pharmacists provide better-informed patient care, confirm patients’ drug histories, and document a patient’s proper usage of a medication.

This is just one example of a great program that we hope will make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. Using the data found in our community needs assessments, we will continue to work with community partners to develop programs that address a wide variety of public health issues ranging from childhood obesity and nutrition to chronic illness and access to health services.

If you would like more information about our programs or the data from our community needs assessments, you can view them by visiting our website at InspiraHealthNetwork.org.
