Issue No.2 has arrived! In this issue we are highlighting a number of products for sustainable design, in particular one product generally seems to be overlooked….TIMBER.

The use of sustainably harvested timber as a building material creates a much lower carbon footprint than does the use of other common building materials. Timber is a product that can be engineered into a multitude of building designs giving warm and aesthetically pleasing structure. Let alone an enduring material that will stand the test of time.

Another material contributing to sustainable design is Insulation, and we have a couple of features on its use within the built environment.

You will also find information of the efficient storage and supply of hot water, and its application in both commercial and residential projects, with the ROTEX Sanicube.

We have received many compliments on our first issue and are pleased to say that we have increased the content. We are interested in, and value your comments on how we can improve each issue. Please also keep in mind that we are keen to get your input, with your unique project. So please send your project details to our address below...thank you.

Please keep in mind that we are keen to be of assistance and can help you locate products for your projects. You know the ones, those that you have seen somewhere, but can’t recall the name of the manufacturer or supplier… just email us with as much detail as you can provide, and we’ll track it down.

Our staff are regularly visiting your practice to keep you up-to-date and informed of products and their applications. Keep an eye out for:

• Charmaine Phillips in Victoria• Dennis Wilson in New South Wales• Yvonne Dee in Queensland, and• Debra Hughes in South Australia

They are there to help and inform, so please let them know what you need.

Underdeck solves the age old problem for those who have wanted to utilize under the deck space and keep it dry in the wet, and it expands the out-door living space.

Underdeck is a specially de-signed pre-engineered ceiling system that transforms the un-sightliness of the underside of the deck into a desirable and usable outdoor living area all year round.

Up to now there has not been any standard way to cover un-der your deck, just many indi-vidual ideas..

Underdeck panels catches the water dripping through the deck gap and channels the wa-ter away to the gutter running along one edge. Underdeck is designed to catch the water even during the harshest rain storms.

It’s rare these days to find a piece of furniture with a history. This one certainly has a history which we would love to share with you.

We needed to be able to source Red Gum for this Sideboard that had character and amazing colour. We set out on a road trip to Northern Victoria’s Murray River Region where we had organised to meet up with the owner of one of the last Red Gum sawmills in the area. We were amazed to see how much Red Gum he had in stock and went about hand selecting the timber we needed for the job.

The Red Gum selection was amazing; from fiddleback to birdseye to burls and some of the biggest slabs of Red Gum we had ever seen. Our job was not that easy, as we had so many choices. After much deliberation we came across a slab that was 3.6 metres long and 1.3 metres wide, it unfortunately had a crack in the heart but was ideal for the top of our Sideboard. The timber on the doors needed to be full of fiddleback and as you can see in the photo we succeeded.

Ancient red gum was used as an inlay in the top and as a shadow line highlighted around the unit. Ancient Redgum gets its distinct black colour due to the tree falling in a swamp approx 9,200 years ago and soaking up all the tannins and silt. The legs on the ends are recycled Red Gum stumps which once held up the Croydon Theatre.

One amazing unique piece of Furniture that will last for generations to come. The final result speaks for itself.

THE MASTER CRAFTSMANMatt’s passion for furniture making started at a young age where he helped his father make furniture for their home in his grandfather’s workshop. When he reached high school he excelled in woodwork and decided after completing year 12 that he would do a pre apprenticeship in furniture making which saw him awarded apprentice of the year.

Matt went on to secure a position at a custom made furniture company where he stayed for over 10 years. In that time he was able to further his skills in design and joinery. In October 2012, Matt decided that after 10 years working for someone else, the time was right to start his own business and Sawdust Timber Furniture was born.

Sawdust Timber Furniture specialise in design and custom making furniture to suit our client’s needs. We select all our timber by hand to ensure the best quality is achieved.

Charles Marshall P/L is a family run business based in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Our flagship product is an extensive range of FITZROY Ball Bearing Sliding Track systems.

COMPANY HISTORYCharles Marshall established his engineering business in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1880. Over one hundred and thirty years on, the company has grown, prospered and is still owned and run by the Marshall family.

This unique patented system covers a vast range of applications from light-weight kitchen drawers up to giant one tonne door installations and beyond.

Developed in 1932, the unique FITZROY system provides a reli-able and simple solution to the challenge of finding a durable sliding door track.

A FITZROY system was fitted to the bronze doors in 1932 at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. Today, that same sys-tem shows negligible wear and is still operating with effortless ease. Since 1932 FITZROY has been opening doors on some of the most prestigious architectural projects around Australia.

Although FITZROY boasts installation in such projects as the Melbourne Casino, Parliament House in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House- there are thousands of smaller, but equally spectacular buildings around Australia that have chosen FITZROY.

Used universally in the construction industry you will find FIT-ZROY in such places as:

• Hospitals, schools, prisons• Police stations, sports stadiums• Off-shore drilling rigs• Power stations, fire stations• Swimming pool enclosures• Residential housing• Commercial premises, hotels• Factories, banks• Locomotives and rail carriages• Horse stables

UNIVERSITY TESTEDThe University of Melbourne Engineering Department tested a typical section of FITZROY track.

The track was subjected to 258 hours of non-stop opening and closing operation.

This means that the test door opened and closed fully 130,000 times, travelling approximately 160 kilometres.

PRECISION MEASUREMENT RESULTS WERE IMPRESSIVE.

Cage Wear - No evidence of wear on either surfaceBall Wear - Precision measuring found no evidence of ball wear.Track Wear - 0.0005", So minute as to be regarded as negli-gible.

CONCLUSIONFrom these exhaustive tests, the wear rate calculated was so low it was not possible to estimate the life of the track.
