From The Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers, Tena koutou katoa. Welcome to the term two edition of our Motueka High School Newsletter Insight. I hope that the term break provided an opportunity for mums and dads to spend some valuable time with their teens as well as for students to rest and recharge to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. With many of the start-of-year events and interruptions behind us, this term heralds the start of a more settled period, giving students the opportunity to make significant progress with the course work for their classes. The foundations for students’ end-of-year results are often set during the next two terms so now is a good time for students to establish good patterns of homework, revision and study. Students have been reminded not to leave it too late – to talk to their teachers about starting to get a study plan together. Staff Farewells At the end of Term One we said farewell to James Tait, our Assistant HOD Technology and Teacher in Charge of Food Technology. James and his wife Emily are moving to Australia to be closer to family. We wish all the best to James and Emily. Also Amy Dalton, Teacher of Biology and Science has resigned from her permanent role in order to concentrate on a new business venture, however we are delighted that Amy will continue to have a presence around the school in a relief capacity. Finally, we wish Tony Aikenhead all the best for a refreshing and relaxing time whilst on Sabbatical Leave during term two. MHS is on Facebook After you’ve finished surfing to our new school website check us out on Facebook! We are trying hard to keep this up-to-date with stories and photos about our students’ success, as well as information about key events and updates. With almost 2000 likes and lots of active users, it is a great place to keep connected about what’s happening. You can find us on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/motuekahigh Attendance Focus The links between attendance and achievement are very clear. Our latest attendance statistics for term one 2015 show a best-ever level of attendance. Whole School attendance for the term was 93.1%. It was also very pleasing to note that 75% of all students have an attendance rate above 90%. Congratulations to both our students and parents for prioritising this. We would appreciate your continued support with this as we move into the winter months of Term Two. Parent Help at Motueka High School Many parents I have spoken to are not aware that ‘parent help’ at high school is alive and well. We have a number of fabulous volunteers who come along each week to support us. We are always grateful for any assistance that parents, caregivers or members of our community can offer. There are a wide variety of ways that volunteers can make a difference at Motueka High School and we would love to hear from you if you think you can offer some of your time – please check out our “Donate” page on the school website. All the best for a great term ahead! Kia Kaha, Kia Uu

BREAKFAST CLUB & DONATIONS

An amazing band of student helpers are running a very smooth service every morning at Motueka High School, serving breakfast to many hungry, busy young people. This ensures that students are well-fed and in the right head-space to make the best of all the learning opportunities at our school.

We are looking for adult helpers who live nearby and can spare an hour from 8-9 in the morning. We would also be grateful for any donations of jam, fruit, peanut butter or vegemite to help make this service sustainable.

We are always looking for ideas to reward our student volunteers so if you have any ideas please phone us – Ali Comins – phone 021 02360959.

Cultural Education Centre

$464 000 raised for Cultural Education Centre at Motueka High School

On 8 May 2015, Motueka High School and our local community came together to celebrate our achievements to date in achieving our vision for a Cultural Education Centre at Motueka High School.

In addition to providing a place of belonging for all of our students at Motueka High School, especially Māori and Pacifica learners, it will provide a much-needed community resource.

We are seeking to provide a better infrastructure at Motueka High School to support our learners, complementing our school-wide goal of raising student achievement. Our vision for the Cultural Education Centre is that it will be a multi-use facility with a Kaupapa Māori focus for school wide use. The Cultural Centre will provide a place of belonging for our Māori students, be available for the wider community as a meeting place and as a learning centre for the community.

Motueka High School, along with The Canterbury Community Trust, Wakatū Inc, Ngāti Rarua Atiawa Iwi Trust, NBS and ITM are all financial contributors to this project and are very proud of the $464 000 raised towards the building.

A signing ceremony was held on Friday 8 May where the financial contributors to the project signed the various Memorandum of Understanding documents and affirmed their commitment to the project.

Many students and staff were in attendance at the historic event which represents one of the largest fundraising drives in the history of the school. The ceremony took place on the school tennis courts which is the proposed site of the new Cultural Centre. This location was thoughtfully chosen as it will place the Cultural Centre at the front of the school which signifies the importance of the facility and provides easy access for all. The current tennis courts which are at their end-of-life will be re-located near the rest of our sporting complex to provide a cohesive sports hub.

The amount of funds raised now mean that we have achieved the level of partnership funding required to make an application to the Lotteries Facilities Fund for the balance of the funds required to complete this project. We have yet to hear of the outcome of the decision from the Lotteries Grants Board but felt that after all our fundraising efforts within the community it was important to stop and celebrate this significant milestone!

Professional Development at Motueka High School - Restorative Conversations

On the Teacher Only day at the end of Term 1, all the staff were engaged in a presentation and activities around the processes and philosophies of Restorative Practice.

As a staff, we have been working hard to establish positive relationships with our students. In a school this size we know most students well. Invariably though there will be times when someone will push the boundaries around behaviour and learning. This restorative process is designed to repair the relationship with the wrong doer, so that positive learning can then continue. This an alternative to issuing detentions where the behaviour may not change as a result, whereas if the wrong doer has to think about the wide ranging effects of the behaviour he/she is more likely to change that behaviour.

Our detention rate is dropping as a result of these restorative chats staff have been using in the classroom for behaviours which can be addressed effectively and immediately to prevent escalation of the problem.

The small card shown here is the plan for a restorative chat.

Parent Info UNIFORM In the winter term, students have a number of different uniform options to keep warm. Whilst it can be cold outside, our classrooms are very warm so it is important for them to wear layers that can be taken off during the day. These include long sleeved thermals, (white for girls and black for boys), school vest, school jersey, and the choice of two jackets. A plain back scarf is part of the school uniform as is a school beanie, (outside only). Please remember there is only one style of shoe for girls and boys as explained upon enrolment. Whitwells is currently stocking all of our uniform items except for skirts and the second-hand shop is open on Wednesdays at lunchtime. You can order uniform items directly from the Bromleywear website. We were disappointed in the time it took to send items last term, despite a promise of a 2-3 day turn around. It would pay to phone them to check they have what you want on hand. Canterbury jackets can be put on lay-by or purchased via the school office. If your student loses, grows out of something or for whatever reason does not have the correct uniform item, our procedure is that they bring a note from home to the Deputy Principal. We keep shirts, blouses, socks, tights, shoes and jerseys (all new or freshly laundered) for borrowing. If we don't have something in your student’s size we will write them a pass for the time that is stipulated on your note. Please do not ask permission for students to wear their favourite puffa jacket or rugby hoodie in class as these are not uniform and they tend to get lost, misplaced or become an invitation to other students to wear them.

We thank parents and caregivers very much for helping students to Manage Self and Have Respect in regards to wearing correct uniform. If you are having trouble sourcing or paying for uniform items, please do not hesitate to make contact with Deputy Principal, Stacey Fry

Motueka High School represented in International Children’s Challenge

Libby Ker, Year 9, recently represented Motueka High School in the FEI International Children’s Jumping Challenge, a Show jumping competition set up in a range of countries so talented Children can compete internationally without having to travel internationally. She ended up 9th overall in the NZ competition, which is a fantastic effort considering Libby rode against 5 riders who are in the NZ team. The average price of their ponies was above what most of us earn in a year while Mee Kan Do, Libby’s pony, was a bargain from Trade me that she paid for out of her own savings. The Show Jumping courses are identical in each country and were set to world standards, and while very technically challenging to ride Libby only dropped a few poles.

LOST PROPERTY Uniforms are expensive so please name all your student’s items (including shoes). We will return named items if they are handed in to the office. It is disappointing that we regularly have a large pile of unclaimed, un-named items in the office. Un-named items will be given either to the clothing mart for re-sale, or for non-school uniform, to the Salvation Army or Red Cross.

NZQA FEES

If you have a student completing NZQA standards, the fee will be $76.70 per student. This should now be showing on your student account. This year the fee does not include Scholarship subjects. These may be entered with an additional fee charged of $30.00 per subject. Do you hold a Communicty Services card or are you on a benefit? If you are, you will be eligible for Financial Assistance which will reduce the fee to $20.00 per student, or $15.00 each for two or more students. A Financial Assistance form will need to be completed (you can print these off the school website under “Our School”) and returned to the school office before the fee is able to be reduced.

PUBLIC COUNTER Parents are encouraged to use the public counter at the main entrance (entry off Whakarewa Street) to avoid the congestion of students at the student counter. Please do not enter the school grounds seeking students without checking in at the office first.

The school office is open Mon – Fri from 8.15am to 4.15pm during term time only. Email: [email protected] OR phone 528 9050

STUDENT ABSENCES

To avoid the spread of infection, if your student has flu like symptoms or a heavy cold, please keep them home from school until the symptoms have improved and your student can manage the school day again. If the illness is gastric (vomiting) please keep them home for a minimum of 24 hours from the last bout of vomiting. This will greatly reduce the chance of infecting others.

The only justified absences (other than for school planned activities) are for: illness, medical appointments or bereavement. For medical absences, a doctor’s certificate is required after 3 days of absence.

For any other leave, please write to the Principal advising the date and reason for absence, well in advance of the planned absence. It is at the Principal’s discretion as to whether this leave will be recorded as justified or explained. The Principal can only ‘justify’ up to 5 days leave. A family holiday is not a justified absence but we appreciate you advising the school of the details of the absence. If leave is explained this could potentially jeopardise NCEA assessments, affect attendance rates and also attendance to the School Ball.

Please report student absence to the school office, using either – the absence phone line, email or the school website “Absence Reporting” on the home page, which will go through to the office staff email addresses.

SCHOOL JACKETS

With winter coming, the Canterbury style padded school jacket is available for sale at the school office for $90. Whitwells will stock the shell style jacket, along with beanies and jerseys. Please remember to name school uniform items before they are worn to school.

PLANT SALES

The Horticultural Department has plants for sale - $2 each. Varieties include Rosemary, Hebes, Renga Renga.

Soft Materials Tech

Term One has been busy with year 9 students being introduced to applied design techniques. They learn how to change or enhance fabric through Tie-Dye, applique and felting. Students complete a pincushion made from felt and a pencil case which is tie-dyed and has an applique design applied to the fabric. Students also learn to insert a zip and use the Overlocker. Year 10 students spend two terms in soft materials where they are able to gain 8 NCEA credits to take with them into Year 11. Students work with a client to make an item for someone in the community. In term one the Te Awhina Marae was chosen for the students to work with and create new aprons for their kitchen. The second term students make and create a t/shirt with a screen printed design. The students have completed assessment AS91096 - Make basic adaptations to a pattern to enable a design to fit a person or item. The students made and adapted an apron pattern to fit a certain size person. This term students will complete AS91045 - Use planning tools to guide the technological development of an outcome to address a brief. Students will take 8 credits with them into year 11. The two assessments have been chosen to help students so they are better prepared for gaining credits in soft materials next year. They give students an insight into what is expected of them. Planning is a big part of the technology process so to help the year 10s to plan out their project AS91045 has been chosen. I have found that students rely on store bought patterns and as a trained pattern maker I wanted students to learn how to make and adapt patterns. AS91096 was chosen to introduce students to pattern making.

Dance

Kia ora Whanau, family and friends. My name is Oakley Salton and I am the new dance teacher at Motueka High. I have a huge passion for dance and I am so fortunate to be at Motueka High. Already I have discovered the passion for dance is shared with the students here at Motueka High and the quality of learners from year 9 through to year 13 is very high.

Term 1 finished off with a bang with our first Dance showcase ‘Move’ filled with excellent choreographies and performances from year 10 students right through to year 13. Term 2 is going to be a massive term for Dance at Motueka High. We have the school production coming up with already high numbers of dancers signed up to perform, talent quest, and Momentum – a celebration of dance at Motueka High. All three events are a great opportunity for dance students and students interested in dance to be involved. A Motukea High Hip-hop crew is beginning rehearsals with all students welcome to take part. Term 2 also provides junior students an opportunity to learn dance out of class, students will be informed through the school notices.

Momentum This is an opportunity for dance to be celebrated at Motueka High. Students interested in taking part will be auditioning in the coming weeks to be included in this fun evening. Students are encouraged to get a group together and learn a dance to perform at the evening, solo’s and duets are also encouraged. The performance will be taking place in week 10 on Wednesday the 24th of June. Vast Dance Festival AGM Vast Dance Festival celebrates the combined talents of high school students in the Top of the South region. Every year a day long festival is run in Nelson culminating in an evening performance in the Theatre Royal. We are holding our AGM on Monday 25 May in the staffroom at Waimea College commencing 6.00pm. If you would like to know more about this event you can talk to Oakley Salton, HOD Dance.

“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion.” – Martha Graham

Mathematics Competitions

19 of our students took part in the Otago Junior Problem Solving Competition. We hope to have the results by the end of this term. Students are now preparing for the Australian Maths Competition. This is on Thursday July 30 – Week 2, Term 3. Practice papers are available on Moodle (under competition papers) and hard copies are available from the Maths staff.

Otago Problem Solvers

Pi Poster Competition

The 14th March, 2015 was International Pi day. Using the American date system 14 March is 3/14/15 which represents Pi to the first 5 significant figures (3.1415…). The next date for International Pi day will be the 14 March, 2115…unlikely any of us will be around! Congratulations to the 3 placegetters – Laura Wilkinson (1st), Isaac Benseman (2nd) and Livia Stub (3rd).

Maths Tutoring

This year we have a record number of Y13 students helping out in our Maths classrooms or working with individual students including some on correspondence. The tutors give up one of their non-contacts per week and it is great to see the positive interaction and support these seniors bring to our classrooms. We are also trialling a new programme this year where Y12 students are mentoring Y11 students doing the External Maths Level 1 course. The emphasis is on building up the skills required for the External exams at the end of the year.

The Y11/12 students work together in a pair either in the Thursday morning time slot (8.30 – 9am) or at an arranged lunchtime. Currently, we have 12 Y11 students whom have taken up this opportunity and it was great to see the outstanding success of all of these students in their first assessment. We are considering extending the scheme by offering our Y9/10 students the opportunity of working on a 1 to 1 with a student tutor in the Thursday morning slot. To be successful though, the Y9/10 student must be willing to turn up every Thursday and we set up a working liaison with the classroom teacher so that appropriate course material is available to work on. You are most welcome to contact the HOD, Faith Jackson through the school email system if you are keen to follow up on this opportunity.

As a thank you to our Y12/13 tutors, the Y13 Food Technology catered for a celebratory lunch at the end of term. We had a magnificent spread as seen below!

The Base A highlight for us at the Base last term was the swimming sessions we enjoyed in the school pool. It was wonderful to see the confidence develop and the progress the students made. This confidence was particularly evident on the diving board where Mr Laing demonstrated some very interesting diving techniques. Thanks to all the staff who braved the cold water to support the students. We are looking forward to swimming again in Term 4 when the weather and the water get a bit warmer.

Mr Laing teaches Michael some bad tricks

Another highlight was the performance of our students at the Special Olympics Swimming Sports Day held at the ASB Richmond Aquatics Centre on the 18th March. Michael Tideman was placed first in the 25m backstroke and the 25m breaststroke, second in the 25m freestyle and third in the 50m freestyle. Blair Miller achieved a first in the 15m kickboard, a third in the 15m swim and a fourth in the 25m freestyle. Both boys joined the Marlborough Boys’ College team to come third in the 25m freestyle relay. Emma Gillions came second in two events, the 15m kickboard and the 15m freestyle. John and Luke Rapana-Roach entered the 15m assisted swim. John was placed third and Luke sixth.

After the events everyone had a chance to enjoy the wave pool and float down the lazy river followed by a picnic at the park. Despite all the fun Blair said the best part of his day was competing. The students were all wonderful; they enjoyed the day and the chance to meet students from other schools. Their parents decided it was a fantastic day all round.

P1 - All set to go! P2 - John and Luke compete in the assisted swim. P3 - Well done Blair!

Raquel Walker competed in the Special Olympics Equestrian event at the indoor arena in Blenheim. Raquel’s coach said Raquel was very motivated and focussed to do well. She earned

two firsts and an acknowledgement. In the equitation class she had to follow directions from the judges to show her ability to control her horse. She had to change pace, change direction, complete figure eights and stop on cue. In the working trail she had to weave in and out of cones and pick up things to put in a barrel. Raquel said “It’s good for me to watch the other people do the same stuff. I learn how to do it better. I keep improving myself.”

All in all it has been a very successful term for our students at the Base.

Risk management, navigation and trip planning are currently the focus this term as most year levels prepare for upcoming trips into neighbouring National Parks. Fingers are crossed that the Autumn will continue to ease into the beautiful, settled conditions that make it ideal camping weather in the top of the South.

The Term 2 Year 9 Adventure Skills extension class trip to Abel Tasman NP is scheduled for Week 10, Wed 24- Fri 26, June. Please contact Mr Greg O’Donnell if you have questions regarding this trip.

The Yr. 11 OE programme is embarking on Bushcraft, navigation and tramping this term. There is a strong, enthusiastic group of students producing practical and written work of a high standard.

Year 12 OE students have been training up in kayaks and preparing for their expedition into the Abel Tasman NP in week 3 of term. They are hoping for not a breath of wind, mirror calm seas (mostly!), lots of seal pups, dolphins and conditions still plenty warm enough to swim and play touch on the beach.

At the end of Term 1 a strong, motivated group of Yr 13’s travelled to Murchison to kayak the Buller River and its tributaries. This was a successful trip as the group juggled where to paddle, how to surf and when to rescue, under the guidance of professional kayak instructors. Their skill level and positive attitude impressed local and overseas kayakers… “not only good paddlers, but good people to go paddling with!”

They move now to re-acquainting themselves with rope skills including Single Rope Technique (SRT), Caving and a particular focus on safety, leadership, rope-work and rigging. These skills have stood MHS graduates in good stead as they have put them to use in NZ and around the world in careers as diverse as movie set construction, oil rigs, industrial rope access, safety consultants for Adventure Races, SAR and adventure industry. The remainder of Term 2 is devoted to Bushcraft, making and perfecting lightweight cookers, shelter building and putting these into practice out tramping.

Important Information about Outdoor Education Field Trip Return Times:

We endeavour to return in time for afternoon buses. If this is not going to be the case (e.g. weather, injury, vehicle breakdown) this is communicated with the school office.

Once or twice each term there are extended day trips when a later return time is negotiated with students. Plenty of warning is given and these trips are published here in Insight, on the school website) and are posted in the Outdoor Education Room 20 to enable students to inform parents, other classes and make alternative travel arrangements. We are bound by Ministry of Education and school policy to ensure students are at school till the end of the day. Should students and caregivers wish to make alternative pick up arrangements on these days this needs to be arranged in advance through the office, DP’s and relevant OE teacher.

NB. If you wish to make after hours contact regarding any Outdoor Education trip, in the first instance please contact the EOTC Co-ordinator, Stacey Fry on 021 0221 6375

Shave for a Cure

On Wednesday 25 March, Motueka High School set off to make Shave for a Cure 2015, our biggest yet. We succeeded. With three staff members and

11 students, we had record numbers of heads shaven for this year’s event. The fundraising started early, with many shavee’s asking friends and family to donate. Our goal was $3000 ($1000 more than 2014). By the time the big shave rolled around, we had already passed this goal and were third in the school ranks across the country. Our school hall was packed with supportive staff and students, who all donated to watch the event - door donations $481.30. A huge thanks goes out to…

Julie Teakle of Fusion Hair; Jacqueline Kenning, and Heidi James for lending equipment; The support of our local media people who reported the event Alastair from The Tasman Leader, and Tim from the Guardian; Judy Thorp for her stunning photos; Eliza Harris for being MC of the event; Faiga Siaki, Heidi James, and all the people that helped shave the heads; The lovely lads and lasses in the lighting box for the sounds and funky lights; Our Community Service Captains, Shania and Alok; The office staff and finance staff for processing the money; ALL those people who donated.

All up we have made just over $4,700, this has smashed the record we set and hopefully has inspired a group ready to come forward to keep the tradition going for 2016. www.shaveforacure.co.nz

The biggest thanks has to go to a group of hairless, but not fearless, individuals. Thanks for putting yourself out there, and making a difference to the lives of people living with blood cancers:

It was a qualifying game to compete in the Darcey Cup against other Secondary schools from around the Nelson and Marlborough region. Ultimately the winner goes through to the National competition called the Gilette Cup.
