Editorial

Well that was fast! The year has flown by already and we have another summer holiday to look forward to before getting down to work again next year. It’s been a busy year, with many exams and sports competi-tions taking place, and some of you might even be headed into the holi-day with schoolwork still to do. IB1s have extended essays to write and 10th Grade have IGCSE results to wait for, so the summer may not be as relaxing as some may have hoped.

This is also the last issue that I will be in charge of, as I will be handing over to the very capable hands of Nathalie Reeve and Belinda Kurras for next year. I wish them the best of luck and hope they have as much fun taking charge as I have had.

Finally, I’d like to wish the best of luck to those who are leaving BIS at the end of the year, I hope you have successful futures wherever life takes you, and to everyone else, have a brilliant summer holiday!

Ask MelodyBy: Melody

Ask Melody (with a twist) Why do we sing “Rock a Bye Baby” to lull a baby to sleep when the song is about put-ting your baby in a tree and letting the wind crash the cradle on the ground?

It’s not just that one song that’s bad, but many old nursery rhymes and stories end in tragedy as well. “Little Red Riding Hood” ends with the wolf eating people, then gets killed himself, “Three Blind Mice” is sad because they’re blind and the farmers’ wife wants to cut off their tails’ And who can forget poor old Humpty Dumpty who fell off the wall and couldn’t be fixed. “Rock a Bye Baby” is just another one. What I learnt in primary school was that the lyrics of “Rock a Bye Baby” refer to a new prince that was born to a King of England, and they were meant to wish death upon the prince. I guess at the end of the day, the songs are just supposed to have a soothing melody and anyway, babies can’t understand.

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

First things first, square boxes are pretty simple! Would you really want to fold a round box? Round boxes are a waste of money and are bad for storage space, as they would need to be pre-made. They would be irritating for the people trying to get their pizza out of the box, unless they flipped it upside down or demolished the box. Also, I suppose square boxes stack easier when they’re being carried :) Why put a towel in the dirty clothes basket if when you get out of the shower you are clean?

To be honest, you›re not really clean when you get out of the shower. When you dry yourself, you still rub off dead skin cells and usually some oil and dirt. Even if you hang your towel to dry out well, it will start to smell in about a week from bacteria/mold that can grow there (gross). Anyway, do you really want to be wiping your face with the towel you dried your butt on the last time you had a shower? I think not!

PLAY OR DIE

“May the odds be ever in your favor” if you know this phrase you are most likely to be one of the millions Hunger Games fans. It‘s the new Twilight, people say. It‘s so much better, they add. But what is it really about?

If you are real Hunger games fan then you probably know that it‘s not just some new movie for crazy teenage girls, but a novel by Suzanne Collins. The story takes place in the nation called, Panem, which consists of 12 districts, and it is narrated by the main character - Katniss Ever-deen. The main problem of the people are the annual Hunger Games, which are punishments for previous rebellion. Every year, one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18, are chosen from all 12 districts and sent to the Hunger games, or their death, since only one of them comes back. All the others are killed by each other. Isn‘t this a quite dramatic plot for a heart-breaking story? If you still think it isn‘t, then let me add that Kat-niss‘s younger sister, 12 year old Primrose, is chosen for the 12th annual Hunger Games. However, Katniss volunteers and goes in aher place. More drama? The second person chosen is Peeta, a guy who a few years earlier gave Katniss a loaf of bread when she was starving. Who‘s going to win? And who will die? Will Katniss fulfill her promise to her sister and come back alive?

As you can now see, the story has nothing to do with Twilight, so let‘s forget it.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games, instead of focusing on acheesy love story, enhances the values of the family. Katniss isn‘t one of the silly teenagers (even though she is only 16) who cares only about love, even though she has all rights to lose her mind over two attractive guys: Gale and Peeta. However, all decisions this girl makes are based on the welfare of her family. Katniss, without any doubt, is someone we all can respect and look up to.

So? Will you join the Hunger games and fight for your life? I would say that you should definitely give it a try, because this story will change your life, no joke! It changed my life, as well as my view of the books for teenagers. And… don‘t go for a movie just because it‘s shorter than a book. We all know that books are way more educational than movies and also more touching. So be smart and go read a book!

Jokes By: Alina Chen Jokes

A man walks into a pub and sits down next to a man with a dog at his feet. “Does your dog bite?” “No.” A few minutes later the dog bites the man’s leg. “I thought you said your dog doesn’t bite!” the man says indignantly. “That’s not my dog.” A brain walks into a bar and says, “I’ll have a pint of beer please.” The barman looks at him and says “Sorry, I can’t serve you.” “Why not?” asks the brain. “You’re already out of your head.” Some random signs:

In an airline office: “We take your bags and send them in all directions.”

In a hotel: “It is forbidden to steal hotel towels. If you are not a person to do such things, please do not read this notice.”

On an electricity pole: “DANGER! To touch these wires will result in instant death. Anyone found doing so would be severely prosecuted.”

In another hotel: “Please bathe inside the tub.”

On a farm: “Trespassers beware! I shoot every tenth trespasser, and the ninth one just left.”

On a dock: “Safety ladder. Climb at own risk.”

Billboard sign on a highway: “Nobody reads billboards…….. But you just did. J”

Music ReviewBy: Erek Thürsam

Music Review: Flux Pavilion

In the last two issues we presented to you the songwriter Ed Sheeran and the rock band Kasabian. This time I thought that it time to talk about a new artist called Joshua Steele, better known as Flux Pavilion.

Flux Pavilion is one of the pioneers of the British dubstep movement along with Doctor P, Excision and Datsik, for those who might have never heard of him ever before. For those who do know him and listen to his music, read on anyway. You might still find something interesting.

Flux Pavilion started experimenting with music when he was 13 and you can still hear this experimentation, even though ten years have passed since then. He loves mixing his tremulous dubstep with a lot of Hip-Hop and was so good that even Kanye West and Jay-Z sampled his single, “I Can’t Stop”, for their album “Watch the Thrones”. The song is called “Who Gon’ Stop Me” and is definitely worth checking out even though it doesn’t show as much potential as his new collaboration “Daydreamer” with the British rapper Example. Here, he traditionally hits the drop after 50 seconds of Example spitting lyrics over a continuously increasing, hyping intro, driven by a militaristic snare drum pattern. All that is accompanied by a synth harp loop that separates his music from various other dubstep producers. What follows afterwards just makes you want to sit back, boost the volume even further and finally allow yourself to “escape to another world and live for another day”, as Example phrases it.

Also definitely worth listening to is his song, “Hold Me Close” and his remix of “Cracks” by Freestylers. So give it a shot and maybe one of you will discover a love for this devastating music genre!

SMARTerBy: Jan Wagner1000 solutions that make Berlin a bit SMARTer!

A new form of “car-sharing” has changed the Berlin transport system. Since November, 1000 cars are parked all around Berlin, ready to take anybody, anywhere in Berlin. The SMART cars belong to the company, Car2Go, which makes these cars available to Berliners. This car-sharing system has also made it to other big cities in the world like Washington D.C., Vancouver, Amsterdam and many more. But how does it work?

Once a member of Car2Go, one can look for the next nearby free car on a smartphone or computer, unlock the car with the member card and drive off. The costs for a drive are 0,29€ per minute and maximum 12,90€ per hour. Once finished driving, one can either leave the car any-where in Berlin and make it free to others again, or pull out and take the key to keep it reserved for 0,09€ per minute or maximum 5,40€ per hour and no parking tickets are needed for Car2Go cars. If less than 25% of petrol is still in the car, one can refuel and earn 20 minutes of free driv-ing. The fueling cost is covered by the Car2Go Company.

What INSIGHT thinks:

A great idea to improve mobility throughout Berlin. 1000 cars is definite-ly a good number to provide enough people with such a great service. The idea and implementation of spontaneously finding a car close to you and driving through Berlin with it, is awesome. The cars are small Smart

cars and can fit into any parking space, but can only carry two people. The condition in which the closest car is can often vary (bad smell or cuts in the seat). However, Car2Go has already introduced a feedback system by which customers can report anything directly to the company. It is a great system that should be introduced to a lot more cities.

BIS Sports

B.I.S. Athletics

Due to the long INSIGHT break, a lot of news about B.I.S.’s sport teams has not been reported. To keep you up to date, here are the current standings of the B.I.S. Badminton, Tennis, Soccer and Basketball teams.

The Badminton team did not have any matches, however they went to a trainings camp in Kienbaum, where they prepared themselves for the upcoming games. After this camp, players said they felt more confident and ready to take on new teams.

The Tennis team returned from GISST and came in 3rd place. The matches were all very close and interesting to watch, however it wasn’t enough for B.I.S. to participate in the finals. The Tennis team though is not done yet. They still have quite a few tournaments on their agenda. Players want to learn from their mistakes at GISST and use that to play better in the next matches.

The boys and girls Soccer team have also been busy since the last INSIGHT issue. They returned from a tournament in Italy. The boy’s team came in 3rd place from their pool. The girls came in 2nd place from their pool. Even though these results might not sound that excellent, the players enjoyed their trip to Italy and the experience of playing against international teams.

The High School and Middle School basketball teams also returned from GISST. International School Frankfurt managed to bring the 2 year winning streak of the High School boys to an end by winning the final with 7 points. Coach Smith says that B.I.S. should have won the Sportsmanship Award for letting another team win the GISST title. “This loss showed us that we are not perfect and gave us reason to work even harder during practice, so we can start a new winning streak as soon as possible.”

The Activist Party13

Berlin International School

Jan Wagner, Solene Tecourt , Fidi Traeckner and I created this school organization to strengthen the bond between students. The Activist Party aims to work with the students. Whenever you think that you have a problem or idea that needs to be discussed you can come to either one of us, and talk it through. We have planned many activities/events and it would be highly appreciated if they were attended by all of you, like at the dodge ball game in the cage. A lot of people were there and I want to thank each one of them for coming. It was quite a success and many people enjoyed it. Any activity or event that is com-ing up needs to be supported by you. It’s all about the school commu-nity and school spirit. We want to make the time you are spending at school right now as enjoyable as possible.

And by the way, I hope from now on your favorite animal becomes a bear; it’s our new Mascot.

OVERDRIVEBy: Nathalie Reeve

It has come to my attention that programs such as Top Gear (a British TV series) and other car shows/magazines only really seem to concentrate on the super cars of the world. This is all very well and good, but how many of us in the real world, as we are today with recessions in some countries and poverty in others, are really going to ben-efit from them, other than as something to look at? Therefore, I am going to talk to you about cars that we ourselves could buy and brands that are not so popular as the likes of BMW and Mercedes, but can be just as good as the top names. For starters, how about the Seat Leon? Firstly, Seat is owned by the Volkswagen mo-tors and, were you aware that the underbody of the Seat Leon is actually a Volkswagen Golf? However, which one is better?

First of all, you can look at the price for a start. Take the Seat Copa style with a 1.6 TDI Ecomotive engine. The fuel consumption is 3.8 l/100km, with a top speed of 189 km/h and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km. It‘s also equipped with gadgets like a Satnav with DAB radio duel climate control, parking sensors and a stop/start function all for € 22.590.

The Golf Match 1.6 blue motion, for example, averages at about 4.1 l/100km with a top speed of 189 km/h. It‘s the same as the Leon you get much of the same equipment as it but you have to pay for things such as the duel climate which isn‘t even an extra option and a satnav that‘s around a 950€ extra!

At the end of the day, if you were buying a car, the Seat would be a lot better, not only economically wise, but also when it comes to the equipmen. And, it’s still a good car due to its origins. The Seat Leon is not only a family car, but a racing car too, like the Chevrolet Cruze, highlighted in the last issue. It›s used in the WTCC world touring car champion-ships. Seat began racing in the FIA Touring Cars back in the 2003 European Champion-ship with the Toledo Cupra that claimed it first WTCC victory with Rickard Rydell at Silverstone in 2005. The Leon then came along and made motor sport history, becoming the first turbo-die-sel car to claim a world title, in 2008 with, Yvan Muller and again in 2009, with Gabriele Tarquini. Seven years after its launch, the Leon is still competitive thanks to the new

1.6L turbo engine developed by Seat Sport. As it stands this year so far Seat are 3rd in the Manufacturer standings after 5 races with Chevrolet 1st and BMW 2nd if you’re interested in the WTCC you can check out http://www.fiawtcc.com/ http://www.volkswagen.de/de/models/golf/CC5.html http://www.seat.de/content/de/brand/de.html http://www.fiawtcc.com/

School play - Harvey

I'm sure most of you have heard of the huge play the primary school puts on every year. Sometimes it's Aladdin, sometime it's The Wizard of Oz, but it's always a lot of fun for everyone involved. That's why we wanted to give secondary school stu-dents the same opportunity for a creative outlet and put on a play in the secondary school, organized and acted by second-ary students.

After some deliberation and some help from Mr. Guido, we chose the comedy Harvey written by Mary Chase. The play premiered in 1944 and ran for 1775 performances- Mary Chase even received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1945 for her work! Even though it is originally a play, you might be acquainted with one of the three movie adaptions of Harvey that have been produced over the last three decades. Although it is quite old, the humor in the play transitions flawlessly into today’s world. An “insane” person, his aspira-tional sister, a few doctors and a flirty caretaker, among other characters, make Harvey such an entertaining play from the beginning straight to the end.

The play centers around Elwood P. Dowd, a pleasant and well-mannered but eccentric man who happens to have an invisible friend, a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall rabbit who goes by the name Harvey. His sister, Veta, finds his in-

troducing Harvey to everyone he meets extremely embarrass-ing and wants to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her and her daughter this humiliation. However, a few mishaps occur, and hilarity ensues. Elwood and Harvey become re-sponsible for humorous misunderstandings, a family accept-ing its members for who they are, and romance blossoming in unexpected places.

Due to the overwhelming response of students who wanted to take part in the play, we had a hard time picking only twelve people for the acting roles. However, we now have a great cast consisting of 6th graders to IB1s with a lot of talent that will be sure to deliver an amazing performance of this timeless play. Everyone has been working very hard to make this possible, and we are thankful to everyone who has stuck with the pro-ject for so long. The play will be performed around Christmas next school year, but we will be performing two scenes at the end of the school year to give everyone a taste of what’s com-ing, we hope to see you there!

IB2 Graduation

By: Helena Claddera and Nathalie Reeve

After IB2 exams, the final steps left of their IB education was their graduation!!!

It took about a year to plan and 2 whole days of work for teachers, The PTA and us, the IB1 C.A.S. helpers, for the day to go off without any disasters.

We asked a few of our IB2 friends if they could answer some questions and they were happy to. Here are their responses:

How did you find the graduation?

Maurice Hensel: The graduation was very nice. I think the plan didn’t come across too well for certain aspects e.g. when precisely the IB2s walk in, but in the end everything ran very smoothly.

Emanuel Hardorp: I liked it. It went well all in all.

BoFan Peng: It was very nicely done by both the administration and CAS stu-dents.

Kimberley MacFarlane-German: I really liked the IB Graduation. Although we did not (and indeed, still don’t) have our results and so couldn’t get real diplo-mas, it was a great way to celebrate the end of really our school career. I also liked ceremony that was classy, yet funny and, it was a chance to get to talk to everyone and have a chat with the teachers now that everything is over.

Are you glad that you are finished with school? Why?

Maurice Hensel: I am glad that the stress associated with the education is over, but I have made bonds with people that I intend to keep, and now that people all go their own ways, this will be hard. So my feelings are mixed, but I am in-deed glad I am finished with school (where school means just the program and the work).

Emanuel Hardorp: It’s bitter sweet…

BoFan Peng: Yes and no. Happy that I am done with school and fully starting

Page 19: Insight magazineMay-june 2012

19

Berlin International School

my own life now, but I will miss the school feeling at the same time. I miss my friends as well, because we will be all around the world and can’t see each other every day anymore.

Kimberley MacFarlane-German: I am, on the one hand, glad that school is finished because it means that I can now focus on what I really want to do, start a career, explore my interests and not have to sit pondering over math equations that I probably won’t need in the immediate future. On the other hand, the majority of our lives up until this point have been spent in school and preparing for this moment, for this graduation and this final farewell, which is quite daunting in itself. I think for me, it hasn’t really hit yet that school is over, and you won’t be seeing your friends on a daily basis or labo-ring over work and deadlines for a few more months or years at least. Now is really the time to try and squeeze in as much adventure and experience as possible so that I don’t fall into the void of, ‘what do I do now?’, But right at this moment, trying to enjoy the relief of a stress free/exam free life is my priority.

Any other comments?

Maurice Hensel: -

Emanuel Hardorp: You’ll only notice that you like school once you are fini-shed.

BoFan Peng: -

Kimberley MacFarlane-German: to the IB1’s – Good Luck next year!

We also asked Ms. Moffat , Ms. Busso, Mr. Guido and Mr. Compeyron and they all said that it went rather well.

Ms. Moffat: It was great! It was lovely weather, we had a great team and eve-rything ran smoothly.

Page 20: Insight magazineMay-june 2012

20 Insight May-June 2012

Ms. Busso-Heinze: I thought this was an absolutely wonderful graduation. The atmosphere was so relaxed and it seemed like people really wanted to be there. I think the guest speaker was a highlight. He was humorous, engaging and insightful!! The follow up speeches were also inspiring and as for my stint with Mr. Guido, I can only say it was tons of fun. I enjoyed the whole day very much.

Mr. Guido: I thought it was good. The speeches were short, meaningful and hu-morous, which kept the audience asking for more (because they ended before the audience got bored).

Mr. Compeyron: It was definitely better than last year. The organization aspect was tidier. The flags on the screen in the graduation room were a nice touch and the 2 bands created a nice atmosphere.

Although they have graduated and have been to Barcelona (IB2 organized trip), they still have the painstakingly long wait, until they actually know if they’ve passed.

The BIS wishes them all the best and hope they achieve their goals in life!
