When making decisions, your mind goes through a process of identifying, labeling, valuing, and choosing. Much of the time you are not even aware this is happening. Think about how the decision-making process works. Look at the “Six Steps for Making a Good Decision”:

Task 2Complete the following task.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ GIRL GUARDS

Throughout your life, you will make many decisions. Some decisions will not have a great effect on you or those around you. Other decisions have the potential to impact you, your family, co-workers and friends greatly.

Look through the list of responsibilities at the beginning of this task to determine who will be affected by the decision you make in each situation. Discuss this with an adult or members of your troop.

Use this “Six Step” process to make a decision about the following scenario:

You are doing well in school, play on a sports team on Saturday and in the corps band on Sundays. You have been offered your dream job. The hours you will have to work are:

4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. – Saturday

8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – Sunday

What needs to be decided?

How can you ask God to guide your choice?

What are your available choices?

What might be the consequences of each choice?

Based on what you know, what is the best choice?

Once your decision is made, what would you need to do to put it into effect?

SIX STEPS FOR MAKING A GOOD DECISION1. Determine what decision needs to

be made.

2. Pray about the decision.

3. Decide what choices are available.

4. Consider the possible consequences of the choices.

5. After looking at all the information, select the best choice.

6. Do what you have decided to do.

As an adult you will have to make many difficult choices. Taking the time to make life-impacting decisions carefully and prayerfully will help you make good choices.

An additional step to making good decisions is to look back and evaluate your choice to see if it was the best one. Did things turn out the way you expected? Would you make the same choice if you had to do it over again?

1. PRACTICE MAKING CHOICES.

Role play the following scenarios with friends or members of your troop. Be sure to use the “Six Steps” listed in Task 2 to make a decision.

2. A RESUME IS A DOCUMENT YOU USE TO TELL POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS ABOUT YOUR SKILLS, BACKGROUND, AND EMPLOYMENT HISTORY.

Learning to write an effective resume is important. Use www.how-to-write-a-resume.org or another online service to build a free, online resume.

Ask your parent(s), school counselor, or other trusted adult to help you decide what to include in your resume. Make sure it is professional, well-written, and attractively printed. Save a copy for future use. Each time you apply for a new job, you will need to update your resume.

3. ONE OF THE FIRST ADULT DECISIONS YOU WILL MAKE IS OPENING A BANK ACCOUNT.

If you have not already done so, visit a full-service bank to open a savings account. Be sure to bring along your parent or guardian.

SCENARIO 2 You made plans with a friend from out of town to see a movie on Friday night. On Friday morning, a guy you like asks you to go to dinner that evening. What will you do?

SCENARIO 1 A number of friends are gossiping about Kelli, another girl in your class. You join the conversation and make a joke about Kelli’s clothes. Kelli and one of the teachers overhear your comment. What will you do?

Speak with a personal banker to learn:

• The differences between savings and checking accounts

• The interest rates (if any) paid for each type of account

• The minimum balances required for opening and maintaining each type of account

• Costs and fees associated with each type of account

• The age requirements for opening each type of account

• The types of personal information and identification required to open an account

• Whether debit cards are available for use with the accounts

• How to set-up and protect a PIN (personal identification number)

• The bank’s policy about “funds availability”

If you open an account, be sure to keep your bankbook in a safe place. If you create an online account or obtain a debit card, make sure you keep your passwords or PIN numbers in a safe place.

Interview an adult who owns rental property. Ask the following questions:

What do they look for in a tenant?

What type of lease and deposit do they require?

Do they have any special restrictions?

4. GO ONLINE OR SEARCH THE CLASSIFIED ADS IN YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER TO FIND SUITABLE APARTMENTS THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR RENT.

Make appointments to view at least two apartments. Be sure to explain the reason for your visit to the apartment managers. Ask a parent, guardian, or other trusted adult to accompany you on these visits. Before you go, make a list of things to look for in a suitable apartment and determine a budget. Evaluate the suitability of the apartments based on:

• Proximity to stores, transportation, etc.

• Security deposits required

• Services and utilities included

• Length of lease

• Noise restrictions or other rules

Which of the two apartments would best meet your needs/budget?

7. RESEARCH YOUR STATE’S REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING A DRIVER’S LICENSE.

Answer the following questions:

What are the requirements for obtaining a license? (minimum age, special training, insurance, etc.)

Share what you learn with your leader or troop.

5. ASK A PARENT OR GUARDIAN TO ACCOMPANY YOU ON A VISIT TO A FULL SERVICE BANK TO LEARN ABOUT CREDIT CARDS AND FINANCE CHARGES.

• Explain the reason for your visit to the bank representative.

• Ask the representative to explain the pros and cons of using credit cards.

• Inquire about credit reports, identity theft, and online security.

• Learn about finance charges, minimum monthly payments and other fees associated with credit cards offered by the bank.

• Determine how much it would cost to purchase a jacket costing $200, if you charge it to the credit card.

6. MAKING A BUDGET HELPS YOU KEEP TRACK OF YOUR INCOME (THE MONEY YOU HAVE) AND YOUR EXPENSES (THE MONEY YOU SPEND).

Writing these things down will help you to understand what you can or cannot afford to spend each month. A budget can also help you spend less and save for the future. Keep a budget for one month. Share it with your leader.

Most computers have a program you can use for managing a budget or go online to www.moneyand stuff.info/pdfs/SampleBudgetforTeens.pdf to make your own budget sheet. Determine your income from your allowance, a job, birthday gifts, etc. Estimate your expenses. Be sure to set a savings goal and determine how much you will need to set aside regularly in order to reach the goal.

What recommendations do they have for someone renting an apartment for the first time?

If you meet the requirements and have the permission of your parents, apply for a driver’s license.

– OR – Learn how a person in your state may obtain a state identification card. List the minimum age, fees, and documentation needed. Apply for an identification card.

What is the fee for obtaining a driver’s license?

How long is a license valid?

What documents are needed in order to apply for a driver’s license?

What type(s) of testing is required?

The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:11(NIV), “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.”

Paul maintains that becoming an adult includes more than physical development; it also involves developing a complex thought process. Making wise choices is part of becoming an adult. God created you with the ability to think and reason. This is a skill you will develop and use your whole life.

Think about the choices you have already made today:

I ate for breakfast.

I wore to school.

I watched on television.

I spent time with .

When you made these choices, were you aware you were making intentional decisions?

Will your choices be the same tomorrow? Why or why not?

Your life involves making all sorts of decisions. Some of those decisions affect your relationship with God. This may be the right time to grow up and get serious about the part God will play in your life.
