Insight into BISD This has been another great school year filled with countless achievements by our students and staff. We hope you enjoy this edition intended to summarize some of those achievements, keep you informed of action items accomplished this school year as well as let you know of some upcoming plans. We invite you to view many more of this year’s highlights on the B*Braggin web page, where you can view student and staff highlights captured each week throughout the school year. We have some exciting plans for the summer thanks to the bond passed by our stakeholders in 2014. The first of five new elementary campuses is scheduled to open its doors for students in August and construction has begun on the second. Upgrades to our Career & Technical Education programs and renovations and additions to provide added safety and security for our students and staff will also take place over the summer months. It is our desire in BISD to ensure all of our students are receiving a quality education, have outstanding learning experiences, and are surrounded by caring and compassionate staff. We believe in our students, our staff and our district. Thank you for trusting us with your child each and every school day. Enjoy your summer! This school year Polk and Griffith elementary schools opened their new gymnasiums (no more CafeGymnaToriums—Cafeteria, Gymnasium and Auditorium all in one room)! The summer will also bring some exciting new additions to BISD as part of the 2014 Bond. Renovations and improvements will be made in the Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs at both high schools in the areas of Health Science, Culinary Arts, Ag Mechanics, Welding and Robotics/Engineering. Polk Elementary and Rasco Middle schools will receive renovations to their office areas that will create a security vestibule at the front entry as well as exterior improvements to the campus. Clute Intermediate School will receive new tennis courts and the removal of an unusable building. Freeport Intermediate will receive exterior improvements and

the existing track will be resurfaced. Brazosport High School will receive lighting and sound improvements to the Black Box Theatre as well as improved parking and turnaround area at the rear of the school. Lighthouse Learning Center will receive exterior improvements for safety and security. Construction is underway for two new elementary campuses. The new Beutel Elementary School will open its doors to students on August 17, 2017, and in 2018, the new Freeport Elementary School will open for the start of the new school year at the current Jane Long Elementary School site. Each year following, campuses at Ogg, Roberts and Brannen will be built on the sites of the current campuses. About the New Beutel Elementary School—August 2017 This campus will serve grades Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grades and is designed to accommodate up to 750 students. Its 89,865 gross square feet of space incorporates many 21st century educational design attributes such as daylight exposure in each classroom, collaboration spaces throughout the campus for group learning of various sizes, and overall flexibility of spaces to respond to the needs of today and tomorrow. The facility will have a separate gymnasium and cafeteria, allowing for the option of having multiple functions occurring at the same time. At the heart of the building is a media center with adjoining wet and dry lab spaces that can function for science and art activities. About the New Freeport Elementary School—August 2018 This one-story early childhood campus is designed for 750 Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st-grade students in the Freeport area who will become the pioneers of the new school. This state of the art facility will cater to the unique learning needs and characteristics of early childhood learners. Freeport Elementary will have three classroom wings with a teacher’s planning and supply room on each wing. A large multipurpose space will function as a cafeteria, gym and a place for large events. The new campus design provides extensive natural light in each classroom as well as areas dedicated to outdoor learning and spaces for collaborative learning within each classroom wing.

Superintendent Massey stated during the groundbreaking ceremony held at the new campus site in April, “Today, with this groundbreaking celebration for the new Freeport Elementary School, we continue to fulfill Mr. Swenson’s 1913 declaration that Freeport will have some of the finest schools and school buildings as can be found in any city across the state. The new Freeport Elementary School will honor the community’s rich history and will celebrate the lasting legacy and pride of all former Freeport school students.”

Polk and Griffith elementary students and staff

celebrate the grand opening of their new gym.

Prize Patrol Awards $50K in Grants for Great Ideas

www.brazosportisd.net

Principal Awarded H-E-B Excellence

In April, thirteen BISD staff members were surprised with a visit from the Prize Patrol bringing grant funding for their educational ideas. This marks the second consecutive year that the BISD Education Foundation’s Prize Patrol has traveled around the district awarding Grants for Great Ideas to educators, administrators, librarians and support staff. The Foundation received 24 grant applications in the fall, and spent two months reviewing and scoring these grants. All grants received were innovative, creative and worthy of funding according to the judges. It is the Foundation Board’s hope that someday they will have the funds to award ALL of the great ideas in BISD. Click here for more information and to see a list of grant recipients.

Principal of SFA STEM Academy Melania Gutierrez was surprised by H-E-B with their Excellence in Education Award. She received a $1,000 check for herself and $2,500 for the campus.

BISD: A District of Innovation On May 16, 2017 Brazosport ISD was officially designated as an Innovation District. This designation permits BISD to obtain exemptions from certain provisions of the Texas Education Code, allowing more flexibility and local control for innovative programming.

Watch the video above or go to the District of Innovation website for more information and to view the Local Innovation Plan.
