Mammoth News/Nov 2018 - Page 7

With permission and assistance from John W. Davis and the Northern Wyoming Daily News, the Washakie Museum & Cultural Center is in the process of republishing a 12-page history booklet titled “Worland Before Worland.” The Museum, in its efforts to preserve and make history available to our community and visitors, is attempting to republish many of our histories that are currently out-of-print. Paul Frison’s First White Woman in the Big Horn Basin and Grass was Gold along with John W Davis’ Sadie & Charlie have been reprinted by the Museum. While some may debate the facts contained in these older Big Horn Basin area histories; no one debates their value as representative of the feelings and sentiments of the people of this area and history as related by the authors of the time—these written documents and books are recorded history and should be saved and shared. An excerpt from Worland Before Worland….

On April 7, 1903, Charles Fremont Robertson, a lawyer

from Omaha, Nebraska, led a party of surveyors into what

is now part of the city of Worland, Wyo. He had begun his

expedition by railroad from Iowa and his purpose was to

determine the feasibility of a large irrigation project.

In 1903, the area along the Big Horn River, and around

the present town site of Worland, had a population of less

than one hundred people. It was eighty-five miles from a

railhead at Garland, Wyoming (from which Robertson had

come) and, with the exception of some fledgling irrigation

projects, was almost completely undeveloped. As a result

of Robertson’s journey, however, the area began a dizzying

crescendo of change.

In 1904, work began in earnest on the Hanover and Big

Horn Canals and people flooded in for the jobs created by

the construction. The telephone arrived in Camp Worland,

as well as a school, a church and a store with a post office.

In 1905, more people came and more buildings were built;

a newspaper was even begun. In 1906, Camp Worland

moved across the Big Horn River and became the

incorporated Town of Worland; a railroad, a bank, doctors

and lawyers arrived. In 1910, electrical works were begun,

the town supplied water, and the population reached almost

one thousand people. And, in January, 1913, Washakie

County began operation and the Town of Worland, located

where ten years before there weren’t ten people, became

the county seat.

This article, though, is not about the creation and

development of Worland; that remarkable story has been

told frequently and well. Rather, this story is about the

people of the Worland Valley who lived here before April of

1903 — who lived around Worland before there was a

Worland. These people did not come to the area for the

lure of great irrigation schemes or the excitement of a

burgeoning new town, and their lives were very different

from the later pioneers. They knew isolation and perils and

fears and agonies in ways which would never be

experienced by those who came after 1903.

The booklet is in final proofing stages and will be reprinted

locally at Serlkay Printing. It should be available in the

Museum’s Gift Shop by the end of November.

NEW MINI EXHIBIT: COMING SOON!

The Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone were enemy

tribes, often fighting over territory. Events outside tribal

control forced them to share the same reservation and learn

to live together. This small pop-up exhibit introduces the

story of the treaties, laws, events and people that shaped the

history of the Wind River Indian Reservation (WRIR) in

central Wyoming.
