Please join me in welcoming our students back to campus. I’ll be visiting with the MAB students today and hope to meet with others over the next couple of weeks. I’ll provide some conference highlights to give you some flavor of what transpired. Dr. Craig Nessler, Director of AgriLife Research, informed us that the Research and Extension Centers in Amarillo, Dallas and Vernon will soon have new directors onboard. That’s significant because the Amarillo and Vernon centers have shared a director for many years, Dr. John Sweeten, who’s retiring at the end of this month. Dr. Nessler also noted that our role as scien- tists will increasingly be focused on helping to develop a more adaptive agricultural system having greater social ac- ceptability and being more resilient to shock. Dr. Doug Steele, Director of AgriLife Extension, unveiled a new strate- gic plan that is designed to build a better Texas and have a lasting impact. Agriculture and natural resources are a pri- ority, along with leadership, health, wellness and nutrition. He also noted that transformational education, coupled with an embrace of technology, increased collaboration and strong partnerships with the public will help ensure suc- cess. What came through very clearly to me from both of these discussions was the fact that both directors stressed the importance of economic viability as a cornerstone of all we do. You should be glad to know they appreciate your work and the critical role our discipline can play in shaping the future of Texas and the world. It’s up to us to deliver. I also attend an excellent session on pedagogy and critical thinking led by Dr. Kim Dooley. Kim, along with Dave Reed, and a panel that included Dusty Menzies, provided some excellent examples of how we can integrate a more dynamic teaching approach with reinforced concepts and more effective learning. I’m going to get some of the materials from this workshop and send them to you. We also had legislative updates from Rick Mertens on the federal scene and from Joe Cox on the state legislature. I’ll provide a synopsis of their remarks at our faculty meeting next week. Three faculty were recognized at the conference. Ed Rister received the Partner in Philanthropy Award from the Texas A&M Foundation. Stan Bevers received the Superior Service Award for Career Achievement from AgriLife Extension and Tiffany Lashmet received the Superior Service Award for Team Achievement. Congratulations to all of our award winners on their great accomplishments and impacts! Friday afternoon I’m attending a listening session with some selected beef producers to set priorities for AgriLife Research and Extension. I’ll let you know what I learn. Next Friday, January 20 th Dr. Cathy Limieux, Dr. Annette Citzler and Dr. Eluned Jones will be joining us. They will present a seminar at 11:15am in AGLS 301. The title of the seminar is "Crafting a Career after Graduation." They will also be attending Friday coffee and meeting with faculty and students in the afternoon following lunch with graduate students. If anyone is interested in the meeting in the afternoon, please contact Erin Hardin. Have a great weekend, enjoy Martin Luther King Day and rest up before the onslaught of traffic next week!
